KESAR AND GULAAL: POWERFUL SCENE
Neil's voice modulations were perfect throughout the scene in enacting Kesar's calmness as he walked in, resilience in putting his thoughts across, the genuine love and care brought out in his shaky voice as he reminded her of her self-imposed grief as a widow, the authority while saying she can't ignore but will have to listen when he wants to put his thoughts across, the rightful anger at her for what she is doing to herself. The scene is a memorable one.
This was a very powerful and impactful scene between Kesar and Gulaal. Loved the start of this scene where she lights the lamp in front of Vasant's photo, when Kesar comes in, his image falls on Vasant's photo and the "diya" was about to be put out but Gulaal saves it with her hands from the diya extinguishing. I felt it was sort of symbolic that the lamp for Vasant is deliberately kept glowing by Gulaal herself when Kesar's entry was about to put the flame out.
The flickering light and darkness on Gulaal's face due to the lightning outside and the entire sequence was beautifully shot. Superb cinematography. He gave a calm preface or briefing stating he needed to talk something which was of importance to her and attempted to lay her doubts to rest that it was not about THEM.
Very maturely Kesar brought in the topic that she can forget about his love for her, the deeyarvatu and everything else that he has told her. Gulaal seemed to deride the whole attempt from his end without giving due importance to the gravity and seriousness of the issue he was talking about. He was a mature guy trying to speak some serious issue and here she was treating him like a kid asking him to change before his fever worsens. If it was care, what happened to that care in the morning when he just asked for food?
Kesar knows her very well and he was determined to talk to her and sort this issue once and forever. Again he showed so much maturity to come and talk to her in private and insisting that she had to listen to him and he had a purpose to talk this to her.
We could see the hurt in Kesar as he spoke to her saying "Woh aurat tu khud hai". We could see his love in those tears when he reminds her that she is living a life like a recluse which is nothing but self-inflicting pain. We could see Gulaal react when he talked about her loneliness inspite of being with this family. He hit the right cord when he said there is nothing great to feel proud about living like a widow and that she is deceiving herself. Gulaal can be angry but he is no better when he says "Tu samajhti kya hai apne aap ko". It is amazing that he is showing his care for her in rightfully getting angry with her about her lifestyle. No one else seems to take that authority over her. Though she told him that he has no "hak" over her, what else is this when he tries to make her realize that she has the right to be happy. He does have that right over her whether she agrees or not.
The dialogues here so lovely and heart rending when tearfully Kesar asks her, very softly that too to look into her heart to find a woman who would want to smile, a heart that longs for companionship but instead she has deliberately turned stone hearted. We could see Gulaal's actual self slowly thawing out in front of his words that she had to look away from his eyes and move away. He made her think that it was not her fault that she was widowed and Vasant would not have carried her photo along if she had died. Well there is truth to the fact and that is why she can't hear anything more and that too not willing to hear anything ill about Vasant.
When she uses her "Varna Mei", he strikes back saying "Varna Kya". He did not have any fear because he is not wrong; he just spoke simple and plain facts to her. His mission was accomplished. He did not care whether she really understood or not, but from his side, he spoke his mind, he put forth some valid points as to why she was killing the woman in her? It gave her food for thought. Whether she dwelt upon it or not immediately, is a different issue altogether. When he left her saying the remaining he would speak at the panchayat, Kesar was in total control of the situation.
"Varna Mei..." means "or else I will..." Gulaal does not complete her threat because Kesar interrupts with "Varna Kya?" meaning "or else what?"... and lets her know that he is not worried about her threats...indicating that he was in control of himself and the situation...Originally posted by: lisasandra
well describe 👏.
Can you plz tell me what is "Varna Mei"' meaning .
Rightly said, when she realise that someone cares to the extent of knowing and noticing her heart, it will bring about a change in her that here is someone who actually loves her. I have said before too, her chanting of Vasant's name is her way of curbing her thought process and that is exactly what you said, lashing out at him is her way of keeping her emotions in check. But Kesar's words that her fate(widowhood) is not her fault and she has a woman in her who wants to live and there is nothing wrong in it, should make her think in the coming days that giving life a second chance, is not that bad an idea at allWords cannot describe the beauty of the GK scene. Through that monologue, Kesar not only asserted his right over her (which was always there) but he actually indirectly expressed the amount of love and respect he has for her. He wants her to be happy, he knows that she deep down she wants to live life. She wants to be loved and supported! This scene brought along many revelations to Gulaal. One that she has these buried desires but also that someone loves her to the extent to notice them.
For Gulaal to fall in love with Kesar, she has to fall in love with herself again. When she lashes out at Kesar, it's more of a reminder to herself that this is how she must stop herself.
I have always thought about this. When Kesar says about the open hair, it reminds me like you said about the liberation. Actually in literature, there has been significant references to the pattern of one's hairdo. Kali Maata with her hair let loose is the epitome of uninhibited emotions. In South India, when we enter the temple premises, we have to keep our hair tied. Times have changed now but some temples do request women to put a knot to the loose hair. It means in a way to restrict oneself to the traditions and the society-enforced-check on the dos and donts for women. In colloquial tongue, the elders refer to young girls as Kali Maata for having their hair let loose. Whereas in Kerala, which is more matriarchal in culture, there is no such restrictions. It symbolises freedom and liberation to women. More of hearsay from grandmom when I used to ask why such difference when I have to behave one way in TN and the other when I Visit my hometown. Thank You for pointing it out.Originally posted by: trifolia

"when tearfully Kesar asks her, very softly that too to look into her heart to find a woman who would want to smile, a heart that longs for companionship "You know that this particular dialogue is almost ditto to what Talli had said in the Mango grove just after she realeased Gulaal's hair from her knot (before that scenic sprint)...again the meatphor of open hair...always a significant sign of women's liberation from social norms in South Asian literature and art (yes well studied by SAsian art historians).Nice post as usual Mey Simi!!! I m so looking to the episodes now...the negativity was giving me a migraine!! hopefully yours is not KG induced!! 😊
Thanks, i get what you mean like Kes-Gul connecting with the migraine, luckily for me, i havent had it for a few weeks, but i know soon i will be having them, they will last for about a week or soLennie,
Thanks for the response. And regarding me and my headache, I have mentioned earlier too. It is like Kesar and Gulaal. The minute it is absent, I feel the void and when it is there it overpowers me like Gulaal does and I totally surrender like Kesar.JZee,I read yours and responded there too. I have added more in your topic about MotabaThanks Likarsh for clearing Sandra's doubt. Thanks Prachurya, Neil is impressive in his voice modulatons. Thanks Trifolia, Yes Kesar was in control of the situation.
