There are many differing opinions on this forum on how the writers of MKAP handle difficult social issues such as sexual harrasement, verbal abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, bigamy, and daughter-in-law abuse. The CVs raise issues but fail to follow through with options available in the community to deal with these problems and don't show offenders getting punished for their crimes. The offenders and victims continue to live under the same roof, the abuse problems swept under the rug, until the next issue arises.
Of course, for dramatic purposes, this serves the best option for the writers. And in most cases, there is no clear cut solution for the problems anyway.
I for one, am happy that the writers do raise the diffcult issues, even if they provide no real answers. I don't see the soap opera medium as the right forum for people to be geting all the correct answers. I understand the television is a heck of a powerful medium and just raising awareness gets poeple thinking along the right line ... at least they becoming aware, leading to the next steps... perhaps a future MKAP II will provide more answers ...
Getting to the point of my posting, yesterday I read in the New York Times that slavery in the modern age is not that unusual - an article on page 18 I would have completely skipped had I not been thinking about GANGA and the unsavoury taste she leaves in my mouth, because I find the whole idea of her in the TN uncomfortable!
The article reads, " According to the latest State Dept statistics, as many as 100,000 people in the US are in bondage and perhaps 27 million people worldwide. The numbers are staggering. The victims of human trafficking are vulnerable men, women or children coerced into servitude for sex, or labor." NYTimes Saturday 6/2/11
Again, I am not expecting the CVs to show any real solutions to Ganga's situation, but at least I am becoming aware of this issue...
