Not planning Malayalam film remake: Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar denied reports that he is planning to remake a Malayalam film, saying he is in London to acquire rights of a French movie.

"On record...am NOT planning the remake of the acclaimed malayalam film...actually in london to acquire the rights of a superb french film!," Karan posted on micro-blogging site twitter.

"If all goes well the French film will translate beautifully into an Indian love story...can't wait to get it going...watch this space for more," he further posted.

It was reported that the eminent B-town filmmaker is set to remake national award winning Malayalam film Adaminde Makan Abu with Shah Rukh Khan as the protagonist.

Director Salim Ahmed's Adaminde Makan Abu chronicles the journey of an elderly Muslim couple who have set out for Haj. It stars Salim Kumar, who won the national award for best actor for his performance in the movie, Zarina Wahab and Kalabhavan Mani.

KJo loses to JP Dutta

While Johar denies that he ever wanted to buy the rights for Malayalam super hit Adaminte Makan Abu, JP Dutta grabs the deal

Posted On Friday, June 24, 2011 at 03:03:41 AM
The original Malayalam film, Adaminte Makan Abu, won four National Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Actor. So, Bollywood filmmakers coveting the rights of the film, is no surprise.

Karan Johor (Left) loses the battle to JP Dutta (Right)
The producer of the original version, Salim Kumar, has since been in talks with Karan Johar and JP Dutta, who were eager to remake the super hit in Hindi.

While JP Dutta's vision for the project seems to be materialising, the same cannot be said for Johar. The Dharma Productions owner, however, has categorically denied any inclination to remake the Malayalam film.

When contacted, Salim Kumar had a very different story to tell Mumbai Mirror. He revealed, "Karan's company Dharma Productions had spoken to me about buying the rights of Adaminte Makan Abu. But they didn't get back to me after the initial talks."

Johar's failure to go through with the project has stirred up two-pronged speculations. Some suggest that the filmmaker changed his mind and others attest that the deal with the film's producer, Kumar, might have fallen through.

Ironically, Kumar was oblivious of Johar's tweet, which stated "On record…am NOT planning the remake of the acclaimed Malayalam film…actually in London to aquire the rights of a superb French film." With Johar out of the equation, Kumar is still deliberating his decision to follow through with JP Dutta's offer. The producer added, "Let's see what happens. I shall take a decision in the first week of July."

@eraser... It's an Malayalam film. It has been very appreciated and i've heard is excellent. It won the national award.

Here's a trailer of it even though it doesn't have subtitles.

And here's more info on the movie, if you want to check it out:

I just don't want them to make a remake of it and ruin it. I don't understand the language but my friends who do have explained the movie to me and the parts that i've watched are really good. Hope they don't ruin it.!
