Part 36

The implication of his threat shook her. She held on to him with all her might as if she was holding on to the last shreds of her life. She didn't notice when her nails bore into his muscled arms. She cared for nothing. This was not something she had ever anticipated nor could she ever let this happen. After all, she had not surrendered her will to live by asking him to leave then for nothing. She hadn't embraced darkness just so that one day she'll be a mere spectator as he would choose to walk right into the terrifying passages of her life that devoured her parents, her love, her dreams, her happiness... and her. She couldn't let him walk back into the ambush that had once caged and destroyed her will of survival. Inadvertently, she was displaying her vulnerable face to him... but all that mattered here was his security. She clawed on his arms harder as she dreadfully urged him, "You will not go there, you get me?" her voice dropped to desperate pleas. "You won't go there... I will not let you go back" she kept repeating.

He was stumped at what had just happened. He knew Geet all too well to just expect her to comply so soon. He could read the fear in her eyes. The desperation was visible. In that instant, if he had the slightest of doubt regarding Hoshairpur being the land of their melancholy, it was wiped away. He certainly didn't mean to use that as means to threaten her... he didn't want to scare her or hurt her further. He just wanted to let her know that there were other ways he could explore to know things she was adamant to keep from him. He wanted to provoke her to give in by letting her know that she wouldn't be able to escape him. He knew he had hurt her... In an effort to defy his own pain he had inflicted fresh wounds on her already grieving heart. But right now his focus was the truth... and he knew if he needed to mend the broken pieces of their love, if he wished to bring Geet back... he would have to walk down the murky lanes that took away the essence of his Geet.

He looked deep in her eyes. The pain etched in those hazels that once used to shine with pure bliss and mischief stabbed his heart yet again. He flinched as he held her shoulders and drew her closer holding her straight and urged, "Aisa kya hai wahan jo tum nahi chahti ki main wahan jaon?" But she simply looked down. Cupping her jaw, he forcibly made her to look at him,"Speak up Geet... Bolo" he demanded urgently but she stayed quiet and so he said with determination, "I'm going there". Holding his shirt collar, "Aap wahan nahi jayenge... you won't go" she repeated. Maan shook her shoulders hard and raised his voice, "KYUN?" When her pleading didn't deter him, she took a deep breath, composed herself and looking in his eyes said gravely, "Stop interfering in my matters. Yeh zaroori nahi ki har baat ki wajah aapko pata ho. Maine keh diya na ki aap wahan nahi jayenge toh bas... nahi jayenge." Maan's jaws clenched as his grip over her grew firm, "If you don't want me to interfere in 'your'... matters... what right do you have to stop me from doing what I want? (gently pushing her away he dashed towards his desk) you can't stop me Geet... you can't!" he finished as he picked the receiver of the phone and furiously punched in the number and moments later barked into the phone, "Get me the first flight to Hoshia..." But before he could continue he heard, "Dare you Maan"... Maan's eyes turned to slits as he snapped his head to look at her and exactly at the same moment his eyes widened as words caught in his throat and he gasped. Shocked and frightened, he slowly placed the received back on its hook.

Her actions baffled them. Her desperation drove her to the heights of insanity while it freaked Maan out. She leaped aside and the paper cutter placed in the pen stand on the table was suddenly in her strong grip while the sharp blade was positioned on her wrist. "Dare you Maan" she said with a strange resolve. "GEET", he whispered too stunned to react. Composing the erratic beating of his petrified heart he took a cautious step in her direction, "Geet, pagal ho gayi ho kya? Put that damn cutter down!" he commanded her. But she didn't budge, "Promise me, you won't go there" she demanded. He saw the determination is her eyes and within no time he realized that she was very much capable of executing her threat. And he knew, with this development into their already jumbled chronicle... leave alone going to another city he would now be scared to put her out of his sight even for a second lest she would do something stupid. "Geet put it down'" he told her again. "Pehle promise kijiye" she persisted. He shut his eyes and nodded his head, giving in to her and said through gritted teeth, "fine! I won't go. Please put that blade down, NOW". The moment, he saw her fingers releasing the cutter; he leapt, snatched it from her and threw it out of her reach. He glared at her whilst she looked at him amidst her tears, sighing heavily, he pulled her to him and held her close to himself to soothe his hammering heart, "never do that... please don't ever do that" he whispered in her ears as he very gently kissed her hair and neck. She held him back and pressed her face to his chest and whispered, "Thank you". She then stepped away back. Turning away from him, she wiped her tears and looking at him over her shoulder for a moment, she moved away from him. Badly shaken by the incident, he called her again scared to let her go out of his sight, "Geet'" She stopped, looked at him over her shoulder and said, "Ghabraiye mat Maan. I won't do anything until you decide otherwise" and she left his cabin.

He picked up the cutter from the ground and looked at it vehemently. He then threw it away with all his force. Running a hand through his hair he slumped down on the couch. He leaned forward and rested his face on his intertwined hands as he thought about what had just transpired. He didn't understand her frantic attempts to stop him from going to Hoshairpur but one thing was clear things were more... much more complicated than what he knew... graver beyond uncle-aunty's death and that doomed wedding. And he was not going to sit quietly. Agreed, he could not go there but then that didn't mean he could not get to the root of this mystery. His only qualm was this would delay the matter for a day or two but not really having a choice, he removed his cell, punched a number and asked the person on the other line to extract all the details regarding Handas and the Handa Haveli.

He checked the mailbox once more. There was yet no reply. He shut his eyes. It has been a week since he had sent that mail and since then he made it a point to check the mailbox almost every hour waiting for the reply. This only meant one thing that the receiver had yet not checked her mailbox. He wondered if she even checked it any longer or was she using some other mail id that he was not aware of. He typed "Geet" in the search box and the result generated several mails. But most of them were more than 6 months old. There was only one in the inbox that interested him. That confirmed his doubts that all this while his prey had been freely walking on the Mumbai roads while he waited for the good for nothing detective agency to garner results for him. When he had first seen the date of the mail, he had been infuriated. That love-struck chic, Anu had known about Geet's whereabouts for three months now and she had not told him once. Only if he had known this... his prey would have been in his claws and he would have made sure he encaged her to eternity... his wait would have long ended and his hunger would have been satiated. He extended his hand and touched Geet's name over the screen, "No worries baby...no worries... the day I find you, I'm going to relish you and unleash the animal I'm on you... you will pay for running away from me... you will pay for having tortured me like this'" muttering to no one in particular he let out an evil laugh and then his face contorted as he violently got up and picking up the paper weight kept over the desk he threw it over the mirror crashing it down.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Geet put her head on her desk. She knew Maan. He was not one who could be deterred and she knew until he got to the facts he will not sit peacefully. Even though she wished she could, she didn't have it in her to rely on anyone now... not even him. Brij and Arjun were no body to her... but he... he was everything she had... knowingly or unknowingly he had also ended up hurting her. He had tainted the memories she had cherished. He was the one who claimed to know her better than herself and yet when the time had come, he crumpled her faith in love and him. She was not going to flow into emotions now. But she needed to act fast. She was very well aware of Maan's anger...he wouldn't think before pouncing on the culprits. But Brij and Arjun were dangerous... they were cold-blooded murderers and if Brij could so brutally kill his own kin then why would he spare Maan. What if Arjun tried to harm Maan? She snapped her head up and held her head in her palms. Come what may, she will not let any harm come his way. These were her demons... her perils and she would walk this turbulent path herself. she picked up the phone and called Gurvinder but it was not reachable. She slammed the phone back on the desk.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

He browsed through the photo identity cards of the delegates who had attended the conference last night till his eyes fell on the one he was looking for. The moment his eyes fell on the man's identity card, his eyes emancipated uncontained fury as he remembered the condition in which he had found Geet last night. But what he didn't understand was why Geet was favouring him. In fact, it was her composed and sociable conduct around that man that had irked him in the first place. Who was he and what he had to do with Geet... How did Geet know him? What did he tell her last night? How was Geet related to this man? Does he know anything about her... about them? The questions knocked seamlessly on his brains. He checked the contact number registered in the hotel records and tried calling him but it was not reachable. Irritated, he kept the phone on the desk.

Naintara was certainly surprised to see Anu standing outside her room. She rarely came by in Dev's absence. So when Anu asked her straightforwardly it threw her offguard, "Bhabhi, kal aap aur Arjun Geet ke baare main kya baatein kar rahe the?" Naintara flustered. "Geet... humme kya zaroorat hai Geet ke baare main baat karne ki?" she asked. Anu frowned so Naintara quickly added, "Humara matlab hai ki hum toh aise hi bas generally Arjun se pooch rahe the ki aap dono ke friends ko engagement ke invites chale gaye hain ya nahi. Tab Arjun ne Geet ke baare main baat ki... but Anu, I don't think so that you should call her. Maan Veerji will not like it" Anu was carefully reading her expressions, "Bhabhi, how do you know if Maan Veerji would appreciate Geet's presence on not?" she asked ignoring Naintara's remark. Anu wondered why was Naintara fumbling and her excuse was certainly not convincing. Naintara didn't know how to answer that one. "Bataiye na Bhabhi, how do you know?" Anu urged once again. Naintara was not expecting Anu to come and question her about this. She remembered Dadi Ma interrogating Arjun last night and Anu was asking her now. Did they have any clue? Did they know? She gulped as she gave Anu a nervous smile, "Is main na pata hone wali kaunsi baat hai Anu?" she asked idiotically. Anu narrowed her eyes, "Bhabhi, baat toh hai... kyunki jo baat Mumma aur Dad bhi nahi jaante yahan tak ki Dev Veerji ko bhi nahi pata woh aapko pata hai." She said dubiously. Naintara slapped her forehead, "Kya baatein leke baith gayi aap... chodiye na... you have an appointment at the boutique today... do you remember?" Anu nodded positively as she noticed Naintara changing the topic of their conversation. "Theek hai Bhabhi... I'll take my leave" saying that Anu left her room.

No sooner than Anu left the room, Naintara picked her phone and dialed Arjun's number. "Hello... (urgently) Humme aapse baat karni hai... kahan hai aap?... (gasp) Mumbai main? (frantic) Aap Mumbai main kya kar rahe hain?... (worried) Anu humse Geet ke baare main pooch rahi thi... humme lagta hai Anu ko hum pe shak ho gaya hai... (scared) kahin usse sab pata toh nahi chal gaya?... (alarm) aap jaante hai kisi ko pata chala toh kya hoga? Aap wapis kab aayenge?... theek hai... hum do din baad aapse milenge" Naintara disconnected the call as she drew deep breaths.

Right outside the door, Anu was stunned and her eyes were wide. She had just stepped out when she heard Naintara voice... it was the urgency and the tone of her voice that compelled her to listen to what followed. Befuddled and alarmed Anu quietly left from there.

Geet was walking through the corridor when she felt a tug at her elbow. "Vicky?" she was confused as he pulled her along into the cafeteria. "Why are you taking me to the cafeteria? Vicky I need to finish some work" She said trying to move away but he was having none of it. "Mujhe bhook lagi hai" he offered while he dragged her along. "Haan toh? Why are you pulling me?" Geet asked. Vicky instantly stopped and turned on his heels, Geet raised her hand to keep herself from colliding into him, "How rude can you be? And I thought you were a friend" he dramatically stabbed his heart while Geet looked bemused, "What did I do?" she asked completely taken aback. "You refused to grab a bite with me" he accused her. Geet gaped at him and rolled her eyes, "My fault! I forgot you are Anu's bro afterall" she remarked while Vicky grinned, "dono bhai behan ek jaise ho, Dramebaaz!" she chortled while Vicky simply accepted the compliment with a bow. She shook her head while he guided her in the cafeteria. "So what do you want?" he asked her. "Mujhe? And I thought you were hungry" she said letting out a sigh. "Aree toh tum sirf mujhe bethe bethe dekhogi... won't you order something? (she tried to say something but he lifted his hand to stop her and continued) trust me Geet, if we start getting customers like you na, it wouldn't be long that humme East Villas ko taala lagana padega" he said in a breath..."lekin" she interjected..."lekin wekin kuch nahi... tell me what you want to have before I die of starvation" he moved his hand over his stomach as he said that. "Baap re... aur Bauji mujhe kehte the ki main dramebaaz hoon" she chuckled softly at the fond memory of Mohinder. Vicky smiled at her, "you know you look quite good when you smile" he encouraged her. She smiled humbly but quickly said, "tumhe bhook lagi thi na?" He rued, "well I am gentleman you see, so ladies first" She shook her head as she agreed for a sandwich.

"Why didn't you ask Sasha to join you?" Geet asked once he placed the order. "Sasha ko? Pagal ho gayi ho? She anyways gobbles so much" he said disapprovingly. "Vicky..." Geet slapped his arm playfully. "Ouch! What was that for? Sach bol raha hoon... haven't you noticed how much she has put on... Moti hoti ja rahi hai" he said animatedly. And just as he finished a face towel landed right on his face followed by a shriek, "MOTI!!! Main moti hoti ja rahi hoon? You... you brute..." He gulped as Geet's hand flew to her mouth. Vicky quickly got up to face an agitated Sasha standing at a distance. "Sasha... baby tum... main... main toh mazak kar raha tha" he said as he caught another napkin from landing on his face. "Mazak!" she snapped back but then realizing they were in public she toned her volume down as she hissed, "What were you saying, I eat too much, I? When you yourself hog like a pig!" she huffed.

"Yeh humesha galat baatein hi kyun sun ti hai?" Vicky mumbled under his breath. "Jaan... I was toh just kidding you see... main tumhare baare main aisa bol sakta hoon... main? Itni himmat meri?" he tried humouring her. "I just don't want to talk to you" she said and she slumped on the chair beside Geet. Geet stifled her laughter as she looked at the charming couple. She couldn't help but think that there was this one thing about the Khurana brothers; they could be irresistibly sweet and charming when it came to pursue their lady love. "Geet, you placed your order?" she asked and Geet nodded. "Haann... Geet ne place kar diya... Tum batao na, tum kya khaogi... main khud bana ke le aata hoon" he said sweetly. She snapped her head at him horrified, "Dare you to that... I swear, I'll sue you for viciously slaughtering my appetite" Vicky made a cute face, "I'm not that bad a cook!" he rumbled. Sasha chuckled and ruffled his hair. "See... I know you won't be able to stay angry at me for long" Vicky said that and Geet snapped her head to look at him. These were the same words she had confidently uttered to him once, only now she knew how wrong she had been when she had assumed him to be there with her forever. "geet?" she heard Sasha when the waiter placed their order. "I'm not hungry" Geet said as she suddenly got up from there. "Hey... Geet... kya hua?" Vicky asked concerned as he came to stand before her, while Sasha stood beside her. Geet smiled at them assuring as she said, "Vicky... Sasha... I'm sorry if I sound interfering but I have to say this... (gulping the lump in her throat) I know you guys love each other too much... and I know this would be just baseless and out of the blue but please... (Fighting back tears) please never let go off your trust and faith in each other" and she turned on her heels only to find herself staring back into his eyes that reflected the agony that burned her spirit.

She looked at him for a moment too long and then stepped aside and left the place leaving Maan rooted in his spot. It was in this instant that he realized exactly what had he done to her! He had not believed her... he lost his trust in her... he was one of the causes of her annihilation! He shut his eyes as the hurt in her voice overtook him and the force of his venomous words stung his soul. He felt a hand over his shoulder and turned to see Vicky looking at him empathetically. He sighed, removed Vicky's hand and walked away in defeat.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

"Mr. Rathod we can understand that you need to find her soon but please try and understand that Mumbai is not a small place. We need time to find her" the detective said. "Main nahi jaanta woh sab... pay you as per your wishes and you work as per mine... Locate her! I need her... So you either speed up or shut the shop" he threatened the agency manager who quickly asserted to speed up the process.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
"Ab aap kya karoge Veerji?" Vicky thoughtfully asked Maan who sat behind his desk trying desperately to hold on to his sanity. If at one end the mystery was killing him on the other end the guilt was gnawing him off. He had tried contacting Gurvinder but his cell was not reachable. He had traced his work zone and had made all the initial inquires. Gurvinder was a married man and father of a 4 year old. He stayed in Mumbai but apparently his daughter was not well and he was on leave. Maan rocked back and forth in his chair as he went over the details. "Veerji?" Vicky called him again. Maan shifted his gaze on Vicky as his got up from his chair. "Sabse pehle mujhe sach jaan na hai... But I can't go to Hoshairpur right away" he said and shuddered as he remembered the incident in the morning. "toh is main problem kya hai? Main chala jaata hoon" Vicky offered but Maan shook his head. "Uski zaroorat nahi padegi Vicky. Aur waise bhi Anu ki engagement ko kuch hi din reh gaye hain. You are required to be here" Maan reasoned with him. "Veerji, I'll be back in a day... Koi problem nahi hogi" Vicky persisted. "Nahi Vicky... Fikar mat kar, I'll handle this" Maan assured him as he got up and walked over to the window. Vicky smiled and was about to leave when Maan called him again and without meeting his gaze said earnestly, "Vicky, Thanks for being there for Geet" Vicky's expressions at once sobered as he said, "She's my friend Veerji" and giving him a small smile, he walked out.

It was Saturday. Monsoon discounts were coming up in various malls and a very attractive one was running in a mall that was right next to the hotel. It was their weekly off and so Pinky decided to drag Geet along with her. As Pinky went to check a few shirts for Adi, Geet was checking a few kurtis for herself. A particular pink kurti grabbed her attention and she went to take it off from the hanger but as soon as she pulled the kurti she froze as she saw him. Her heart started beating crazily and her breathing shot up. Her deepest fears were coming to claw at her... what if he saw her? Did he know where she was? She quickly hid herself behind the pillar as she looked around for Pinky. She couldn't fall back in their trap. Her eyes darted towards the door and she made a dash towards it but alas he saw her. The devil came out of nowhere and positioned himself right in the doorway. And then he uttered those three words that choked her. "I found you" he said as he smiled at her calmly. "Let me go, Arjun" she tried to put a brave face but her confidence was failing her. Her voice had faltered and she knew her pretence had slipped when she saw him smirking, "You really think I will do that" he said eyeing her. She felt disgusted under his filthy gaze. She backed away from the door as she considered calling public attention if need be. But then a couple excused themselves as they asked Arjun to step aside so that they could enter and grabbing the opportunity Geet dashed pass the young girl like there was no tomorrow. She heard the girl calling after her but she didn't care. She was aware of the curious glares she was attracting but that hardly mattered. She could hear him darting behind her and then she randomly entered one of the shops to take refuge. She looked around and realized she had left her phone in Pinky's purse and then she cautiously looked at the foyer of the mall and caught of glimpse of him looking around for her. She tried to get a grip over herself and when she saw him entering into one of the shops, she dashed towards the entrance and leapt outside.

Maan and Vicky were driving back home when they saw Geet running on the road. Maan immediately asked the driver to stop the car and stepped out of it. Vicky too stepped out and looked on as Maan rushed towards her. As she turned around the corner she paused in her flight as she looked around for a phone booth to call Pinky, she knew in no time Pinky would start worrying about her and needless to say she wanted to speed off from here. All the horrible memories were rushing back to her as she placed her hand on her chest to catch her breath. It was then that she felt a hand on her shoulder and gasped. She screamed as she jerked the hand off her shoulder. Her mind had stopped functioning as fear of shadowy anticipation engulfed her. And then a firm hand gripped her upper arm and she was whipped around whilst she screamed. Baffled, Maan placed a hand on her mouth. Her eyes were shut and she pounded fists on his chest to let her go. "Geet... Geet'" he called to get her attention but she was not paying any heed to him. Drops of perspiration rolled down her forehead. He could sense she was fretful and he was frantic to soothe her. He looked around to get a clue of what was going around. But nothing seemed out of the place.

He shook her holding her shoulder and called her stridently, "Geet'" and it was then that she opened her eyes and saw him. Her shoulders slumped as she saw him and a sense of relief washed over her. Panting and shivering she hugged him tight. He gently caressed her hair as he asked, "Geet kya hua? Itni ghabrayi hui kyun ho? Kya hua Geet?" he urged her to speak but she just shook in his arms. He stepped away and placing his hands on her shoulder he asked her gently, "Batao Geet, kya hua?"

She looked at him and raising her index finger she pointed back as she muttered incoherently, "Woh... woh... wahan... wahan pe woh'" He looked over her shoulder to see if he could see anyone suspicious but again there was no one was around. "Bhabhi...bhabhii... mujhe ghar jaana'" and then she fainted in his arms. "GEET... GEET'" startled, he patted her cheeks and then picked her up and rushed to where he had left his car.

Vicky who waiting for them, got concerned the minute he saw Geet in Maan's arms. He opened the back door of the car and Maan leaned in to securely put Geet there. He then pulled his phone and called Pinky as her broken words had indicated that Pinky was around. Vicky informed Maan about the time when she had collapsed in the hotel on the day of his arrival. As his concerns for her started getting the better of him, it didn't take him long to realize this again had something to do with the facts that loomed in the darkness. Helpless, he kicked the car tyre in frustration.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Pinky was looking around for Geet when Maan called her and as soon as she received his call she rushed outside the mall. Their car was parked a few paces away and locating it Pinky dashed towards it. "Sir, kya hua Geet ko?" Pinky asked anxiously as she saw an unconscious Geet in the car. "I don't know Pinky. Woh darri hui thi and then she just collapsed" saying he ran a frustrated hand in his hair. Pinky eased Geet's head in her lap as she tried to wake her up. "Veerji, don't worry aap Geet ko abhi hospital le jaiye" Vicky suggested. Maan suspended the driver for the day and Vicky stayed back as Maan rushed into the driver seat. Once the car was on the road, Pinky informed Adi and Pammi about Geet as she kept stroking her forehead. Pinky wondered what could have transpired to have shot her stress levels to such extreme levels so suddenly.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

As Maan drove away, Vicky went inside the mall to check if something was wrong there. Nothing out of the blue caught his attention and he turned to leave the mall when he caught a reflection in the mirror. "Arjun?" he muttered to himself and immediately turned on his heels but the bearer of the name had vanished. He looked around but could not find him. Attributing the image to the fraction of his imagination he glanced around once again and left the place.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Pinky and Maan reached the hospital in no time and were shortly after followed by a panicked Pammi and worried Adi. Pammi rushed to Pinky and asked, "Puttar, Geet kahan hai? Kya hua?" Adi too waited for the answer and Pinky narrated the whole incident to them. Maan focused on the door of the Emergency room where Geet was being attended to. As soon as the door opened and her doctor walked out, the four of them rushed towards him. "Doctor, meri bachchi theek hai na?" Pammi asked. "Don't worry Geet theek hai... Maine pehle hi kaha tha that it's not good for her to take stress. Right now she's under sedatives. She'll be fine when she wakes up" He said. Adi nodded his head and asked if they could see her. Doctor permitted them and went away.

A couple of hours later, Pammi was sitting by Geet's side and Pinky had gone home. Adi thanked Maan and had urged him to carry on but Maan didn't budge. He sat on the couch in the hospital ward as he looked at Pammi who was incessantly stroking Geet's head while Adi paced restlessly wondering what induced this sudden lapse of her consciousness. Unbearable pain was cutting through him as he saw her weak and pale lying on the hospital bed. It was such a contrasting image to his Geet who was so full of life and could barely stay in place for more than a few minutes. Maan was still lost in his thoughts when she squirmed uncomfortably and soon got frenzied as she pushed and kicked the image in her mind, "uh... no... please nahi... Get off... chodo mujhe... Get off me'." She cried.

Maan forgot to breathe as froze in his place.
