hi all u mgt find this topic random:

i was just catching up with the repeat of AR Rahman concert in dubai in star plus.

AR Rahman concerts are the most well attended indian music concerts in the world.

people go crazy just 2 listen to the concert....

just 1 point, over a period of time wen ive been seeing all his concerts on tv (over & over again), i dont see any of the sngers performing.

infact most of them are still and sing, infact some of them like chitra even close their eyes some times.

although farah's definition of 'performance' is nil in these shows, these shows are the most popular and are enjoyed by one and all.

I have always felt that in any music show singing is top most important... if singing is melodious... that by itself is enough for enjoyment.

some of the best singers including lataji, SPB have done so many concerts, ive not seen any of them performing.

so i want all ur opinion on wat does 'performance' actually mean?

for me a good singing is a good performance

Is performance (farah's def) as important as she makes it out to be?

For eg, although the maestro farah khan was so critical of meenal for not performing in II2, she has proved her wrong with her concerts with her absolutely powerful singing. going by the reports audience just love her.

so wat do all of you feel?

Singing is the main thing pragya...if you have a besura singer how can he ever connect with his audiences....
I watched a concert once where Lucky Ali was singing and he was so damn flat that ppl starting booing...tho' he was singing one of his popular songs I guess...

In any case the live audience rarely gets to see the facial expression of a singer in such a concert...its only TV audiences....so I guess its the voice that matters and nothing else!!! 😊

I feel performance is not about jumping and dancing... if u r singing well and having eye contact with the audience then u surely u will Rock the stage.....ur voice and singing gives all the performance the audience wants....about meenal i think she even with her closed eyes touched my heart with her song only.... but sometimes a little dance can double rock ur show like sonu's concerts are also very entertaining....

A very good point. I've been saying this directly and indirectly many a time in this forum that if your singing is not good then you do not connect with audiences no matter how much you jump and sway. People enjoy A.R's concerts because of his songs. I've even watched Sukhi only singing and not jumping while singing 'chayya-chayya'. If people think that only jumping, swaying and shaking hips is performance then I'm sorry to say none of the leading and legendary singers are performers and that includes even Asha Bhonsle. Personally, I love Asha Bhonsle's concerts and albums only n only because of her soulful rendition and not becasue of any other reason. Even a monkey can be trained to perform well but can it sing? That's the big question.

Good thread Pragya! 👏 Here's my opinion for all it's worth...
I "perform" a lot....or rather sing on stage a lot! I'm not your typical Farah Khan's definition of a performer....coz I can't dance if my life depended on it but I try to entertain the audience to the best of my abilities. So speaking from my personal experience over the past years....I think "performance" is highly overrated. To me if a person enjoys their song and sings it with passion it completely translates to the audience and captures them. I so agree with you....almost all of ARR's singers close their eyes and sing their songs but yet they draw you into the music just by their sheer love for the song and music.
I must say to date Shankar Mahadevan is the BEST performer I've seen on stage and the enthusiasm he exudes is amazing. Watching him live was like letting a storm blow me over.....he just consumes anyone who's in the way and makes them his fan! 👏 He isn't a dancer, he doesn't prance around the stage but yet he connects with the audience at a different level. He loves what he does and it shows in his singing. His histrionics are just incomparable to anyone else's and his passion is reflected in his singing. I believe it was the maestro ARR who once said in an interview that Udit Narayan has a "smiling" voice and if you hear closely enough you'll actually agree with him. So to me performance is about completely about singing but singing like you want to....coz you could be singing the most boring song but if you do it with passion even that can be made enjoyable. That was what I saw in Karu and even Hemu!....their passion for singing and for making every song their own. This passion and love for their art is what will take them very fan in life! God bless them both!

I have seen Shankar Mahadevan perform too...on a new years eve in Hyderabad...and boy I havent welcomed a new year like that ever before or after...he sang wo ladki hai kahan and everyone except him 😉 on stage and off stage was doing that famous Saif Ali khan step...too good! Thats whats called connecting with the audience...and Udit narayan does have a smiling voice indeed!!

Wow giggles....that is a wonderful way to welcome a new year! He's just amazing and such a wonderful person too eh? I mean he was so down-to-earth and never had any airs....that's why I felt like comparing the Hyd cuz's to him. I mean I feel the same way about them as I do about Shankar (or Shanky as we affectionately call him 😉). Hope they both reach great heights in their respective careers!

Perfromance for me is not to show latka jhatka and all that singer usually loose their Surr in lots of Uchal Kood and Surr is main thing for Singer.Singing comes first,Even tho Meenal Sang Hum dil dai chuke Sanam with her eyes closed it touched My Heart. She has Proved Farah wrong with her concerts with absolutely awsome singing that was the reason Sonu Nigam selected Meenal for concerts with him,and she is flying high with maximum number of concerts(16 or 17)among all contestants.
Audience just loved her in each concert.

thats precisely my point, i think at the ned os the day no matter whether u sing dance and perform according 2 farah's definition, if u sing badly audience will not enjoy such a perf.

same way if u sing excellently no matter whether u keep ur eyes closed or say still, such a performance will be liked by the audience more.

i feel Maestro Farah khan needs a reality check, i feel shes misguiding the contestants and the voting janta.
