Hey!

It's great to see people that wish to become professional dancers around the forum. :)

Dance is something I've always loved! It's sort of a stress-buster for me. :) I did used to dance professionally but it became really hard to juggle dance with my studies and so unfortunately I don't dance professionally anymore. Thankfully my parents always supported me, in fact they were the ones that encouraged me to start dance in the first place. I still remember how bad of a dancer I was when I first started so now I look back I am extremely glad I took classes.😆

Learning dance can never be a bad thing but I can understand why parents would hesitate if their child tells them they want to make a career out of it because there are a lot of struggles involved in this field.

My own dance teacher had been trained in Bharatanatyam for 8 years and was a trained Bollywood dancer and then she made the decision to move to India in the hope for a big break. After moving there she started off by opening her own dance school, did lots of ads but she had to wait 6 years till she got her first big break in Bollywood and now she's acting against Salman Khan in her next movie! :) Good things come to those who wait but unfortunately not everyone is as lucky as her. Parents should encourage their children as long as the child is passionate about it but as parents, it's their duty to be realistic about it all and make the decision of what is best for the child.

I wish you the best though and I hope you get the support that you need and some day you make it big! :)

^^ Oh wow, Hindu!! That's so cool to hear that you used to dance professionally, and that your parents were the ones encouraging you to keep it up! 😃 Never let your hobbies die!

@ Topic: Well, I do not really have an interest to learn dance, but ever since I was young I was very much into singing. My father did not really comment much on it, but my mom was never a fan of me singing. She would try to get me involved in other activities, but in school I would always choose choir as my elective. I even took voice lessons through my school for a few years, but I had to stop them once I went to college. I have always wanted to learn Indian classical music, but right now I do not have the time. Later in life I will try to learn it though.

I still do sing and try to learn by ear, but it's hard. I try to remember the music theory I learned in school, so that I still have my foundation. My mom still gets irritated when I mention wanting to join voice lessons again, but I think she feels singing is just a hobby that will get me no where. In sense she's right, but people need hobbies for reducing stress. I would get very stressed in high school, but singing and learning music kept me balanced. I feel now I don't really have an outlet. Sure I sing for fun, but it's not the same as going to voice lessons and learning from a teacher or even learning songs in choir class.

My mother wanted me to go into band or sports for some reason. 😆

I was actually a part of the semi-professional group so I used to perform at shows and stuff but being a fully qualified professional dancer required too much of time and energy and I simply did not have that.I don't regret it though but if you do enjoy doing something then you shouldn't forget about it completely..plus dance is great to keep you fit. Now I've become extremely lazy when it comes to exercise! Hell, I consider the walk to my bus stop my exercise for the day😆It is still a lot of fun when you get the chance to do dance shows for uni or weddings or even if it's just jumping on the dance floor at a party.😛

My parents never had any problem with my rehearsals but I doubt they'd have been very keen had I told them I wish to spend the rest of my life just dancing! :\ lol

Oh I love singing! It sucks that I'm no good at it though😆haha yeah, my mum always used to make me join as many clubs and societies as possible but in the end nothing compares to my love for dance😊You should definitely keep at it and keep practising, even if it is just a hobby!👍🏼

Oh that's pretty cool!! My friend still does ballet even though she's working on her PhD! Well, she said for the past couple of months she has not done it, but she did it before. Seems like she was really intensely into it too. Her feet are very purple, and I think she said it has to do with ballet. 😆

I think my mom got more upset about my singing when I did a couple of musicals. One was at a community theater and two were in high school. She said the rehearsals were too many, and she said I need to study more. Funny thing is though, my grades were fine though! 😆 She would tell me, "Why don't you play tennis instead?" My dad pushed golf a lot on my sister and I, but neither of us enjoyed it. 😆

Hey, I think it was very nice of you to open this page :)

Well, I have been dancing "kathak" since I was 4 years old, and now I am 19. I am brought up in Canada, and it is very hard to pursue a dance career here. My parents fully support me because they see my passion towards dance... now only if countries knew how much dance means to us! I've lived here all my life in Brampton, Ontario, and I must say that I am one of the lucky dancers who got many opportunities to perform and different places. But yet I am still a struggling dancer looking for that career opportunity!!

its sad but yeah there are parents who want their children to persue their careers in other professions rather than field of arts or entertainment. well it's da same in my country; sri lanka

it's not relevant here but on a personal note, i wanted to do journalism but my dad was against it as deres no respect for journalists here in my country but dat wont stop me cz im strivin to achieve it somehow!!!

but i hope da perception of parents changes for da betterment of children & their dreams

pls dont give up whoever has objections from their parents over dancing, singing or any field, just keep your dreams alive!!!! all da best guys!!!!
