Chapter 9
A Surprise in the Midnight
Simran twisted and tossed in her bed for what seemed to be the hundredth time that night, trying desperately to get some sleep. But alas, sleep seemed to be a far-flung idea, what with the noises and heated arguments that filled her ears from the room upstairs.
They were fighting again.
Again?
Simran laughed at the word. Did that word hold any significance anymore, given that all they ever did was fight?
Always.
In the almost twenty two years of her life, the only memories she had about her parents were the many quarrels and fights they had had. As a child, she would cry for long hours, sad and scared, not knowing what to do. She would plead with them to stop shouting, and they would stop then, turning away from each other and walking in the opposite directions, and she would breathe a sigh of relief. But then, it would all be back to square one when they set their eyes on each other the next time. As time passed, Simran learned to stop trying. She found herself shutting herself away from her parents as much as possible, not wanting to get involved in their problems, whatever they were. In her teens, she found solace in her so called bunch of friends, hanging out and spending late nights at discos, drinking and partying. She hoped, seeing her in that state would open her parent's eyes, and they would pay their attention to their daughter for once. But sadly, they never seemed to notice. And that stimulated her drinking habits even more. She would have become a full time alcoholic, had she not met Geet. Geet was her senior in college. She had met Geet on the first day of her college, when she was saved by her from some serious piece of ragging. Ever since, they had been inseparable. Geet had unraveled the real Simran inside the melancholic, withdrawn type of girl, taught her to smile and be happy. She taught her to be independent and confident, and was even successful in keeping her away from alcohol to an extent. She was a more confident person now, had a job and was perfectly independent. Her drinking habits were now confined to some wine often, and that she thought was a big achievement considering what she had been before meeting Geet. She really missed her best friend. Geet had called earlier to inform that she had got the job in Delhi, and that she wouldn't be able to come back to Bangalore as she has to join on Monday. Simran had been really dejected at the thought of not being able to see her friend, but did not have the heart to voice it to her, not wanting to spoil her mood. Geet had sounded really excited at the prospect of working at the best construction firm in the country, and she was happy for her.
Simran was awakened from her thoughts, at the sound of a broken vase from her parent's room. She rubbed the back of her head stiffly, as she felt the onset of a migraine. The voices from upstairs were becoming louder. Simran groaned in frustration and anger. She really needed a break from all this, she decided, as she slowly crept out of her bed and grabbed her backpack from under the bed. She packed her laptop and clothes and wrote a quick letter to her parents.
Dear Mom and Dad,
Just to let you know, I am leaving. Please don't worry about me, I will be fine.
Do not call me, unless you have resolved your fights forever. I am sorry.
Your daughter
Simran
***********************************
Vicky had already hit the bed after watching a football match on the television, when he heard the door bell ring. Who the hell could be calling this late at night, he wondered as he reluctantly crept out of his bed and walked slowly towards the door. His legs were almost fine now, and with the plasters removed, he could walk and move around, which was a big relief considering that he was alone in the apartment now. Geet had allowed him to stay in her apartment, and though he had been at first hesitant to accept the offer, he finally had to give in to her persuasion.
He was in for a big surprise, as he opened the door and saw Simran standing outside, with a bag in her hands. She was in her pyjamas, her hair was messy and eyes swollen and red, and she looked ready to pass out any moment.
"Surprise!" she said weakly, as she thrust her bag into his hands and barged inside.
"Simran! What happened? What are you doing here at this time?" Vicky asked, astonished and shocked.
"I have come to live here." She stated simply before slumping down on the sofa and rubbing hard on her head as though she had a bad headache.
"Live here? But what about me-"
"There is room enough for two people here. I am going to live here, no matter what, and you can leave if you have a problem. It's my best friend's apartment, and I can live here for as long as I want." She cut him off as she stood up and slowly made her way to the room on her left, which had previously been Geet's.
Vicky stood there still in shock, trying to comprehend what just happened. This girl, I would never understand her, he thought. First, she hits me with her car, then apologizes, acts all awkward and quiet around me, and now, barges into my house at the middle of the night. Well, not my house, but practically mine all the same. Weird girl, he thought as he shook his head and followed her to Geet's room, closely observing her. There is something wrong with the way she is walking, he thought. Wait. Is she swaying?
Vicky had to dash forward to catch her before she hit the ground. Her eyes were half-closed and she looked very pale.
"Headache. Migraine."She mumbled weakly as she closed her eyes fully, her hands still rubbing on her head. With difficulty, he carried her into the room and settled her on the bed, trying hard not to panic.
"Mom- Dad…Please. Don't fight." She mumbled again in her subconscious state.
Not knowing what else to do, Vicky grabbed the landline receiver and dialed Geet's number, his eyes still on the unconscious form that now lay on the bed at his mercy.
********************************
Vicky looked down at the sleeping girl in front of him, while he rubbed her forehead gently. She had vomited a couple of times, and he had again called Geet in panic. Talking with Geet had calmed him down a little. Apparently, Simran often got these migraine attacks, and the vomiting was normal for migraine patients, Geet had told. She had asked him to give Simran a Crocin, and to gently massage her forehead with some balm.
I guess she's asleep now. He thought as he stopped massaging and adjusted the blanket on her properly, and walked silently towards the door. He took one more quick glance at her sleeping form, before he closed the door lightly and slowly walked towards his room with a sigh.
