Chapter 10:

Geet & Pari were woken up at 7am by Rano, who had burst into their room, practically jumping up & down.

"Parineeta, Geetanjali, get up!" she said, pulling the covers off Geet, who groaned & pulled them back over her again. Pari heard her mother's voice and sat up immediately, running her fingers through her hair.

"Pari, wake Geet up, I have so many things left to do and the engagement ceremony starts at 12pm!" Rano rushed out of the room.

She walked to her sister's bed, who had fallen asleep again, and shook her gently.

"Geet, get up! It's the day of our engagement."

"Profit... and loss..." Geet mumbled. "Stock markets..."

Pari rolled her eyes & sighed. "Geet, come on, we have to get ready!"

Geet just turned to her left so her back was to Pari & continued sleeping. Pari grinned to herself as she crept out of the room, with the perfect plan to wake Geet up.

Back at the hotel, the Khuranas had been awake for an hour. Savitri Devi was in her grandsons room, with their suits.

"Maan, you try yours on first," she ordered.

"But Dadima-"

"No buts. I need to see if they fit, & if not I can arrange for last minute alterations. No arguments, go."

Maan reluctantly took the suit to the bathroom.

"How are you feeling about today?" Dadima asked.

"I'm feeling ok about it," Dev replied.

"I knew from the first minute I saw her that Pari was the one for you. You used to be so against marraige before, and now look at you, getting ready for your engagement."

Dev smiled in response.

"Dadima!" Maan called from the bathroom.

Savitri Devi rushed to the closed door, followed by Dev.

"Dadima, I'm stuck!" he said. Dev started laughing.

"Maan, what do you mean you're stuck?" asked Dadima.

"It won't fit!"

"Let me see," she said.

"No!" Maan said quickly.

"Maan, I used to change your nappies from the day you were born. Now stop being so childish and let me in."

Savitri Devi opened the door to find Maan's arms flailing around, the sleeves pushed through. His head was stuck.

Dev was in fits of laughter.

"Maan, what have you done?" asked Savitri Devi as she tried to help her grandson out of the sherwani suit.

"My head won't fit through," he replied.

"Now what do I do?!" Savitri Devi began to panic. "It will take a long time to alter it... Dev, bring me your suit."

Dev did as she said & returned with his suit, which was gold. Maan's original suit was red.

"Let's see if Dev's suit fits," she said. Maan took his suit off & tried Dev's - it fit him perfectly.

"You can swap suits," she said.

"What if bro's suit doesn't fit me?" said Dev.

"Try it on then," suggested Maan as he & Savitri Devi stepped out of the bathroom, closing the door behind them.

Back at the Handas, Pari crept back into the room, a jug of cold, iced water in hand. Geet was still sleeping. She tiptoed to the side of the bed and pured the water all over Geet's face, who shot up, shrieking. Pari began giggling.

"PARI!" she said angrily. "What are you doing?!"

"You wouldn't wake up!" Pari replied, still giggling.

"I'm soaked through! And the water was so cold!"

"Good! Now get up, we have to get ready!"

"I'm gonna kill you," Geet said through gritted teeth, annoyed.

"Do that later, after we're engaged. Come on!" Pari took her sister's hand and dragged her out of bed, going downstairs for their breakfast. They were about to go into the kitchen when Rano appeared, stopping them.

"Girls, you're having breakfast in your room," she said.

"Why?" asked Geet.

"Because the make up artist will be here soon, and the lady with your outfits. So you don't have time to sit around & eat."

Geet & Pari went back upstairs, waiting for their food. 10 minutes later, Rano placed two glasses of milk in the doorway.

"Maa, where's the food?" said Geet.

"I don't want you to eat anything heavy, you have to fit in your outfits properly."

"But I'm starving!"

"You can eat later," Rano said & closed the door behind her. Geet & Pari reluctantly took their glasses of milk & drank up.

Half an hour later, the make up artist arrived. Rano came up with her & introduced her to the girls.

"Channi, these are my daughters, Pari & Geet. Girls, this is your make up artist, Channi. She's a good friend of mine & very experienced in beauty."

Channi was a middle aged lady whose black hair had been pulled back into a tight ponytail. She wore a simple white salwaar kameez with a silver box in hand, carrying her make up.

"My my, what natural beauties they are," she complimented. "I won't have to put much make up on you both then."

The twins smiled in politeness, & Rano left them to it.

"Who's first?" she asked.

Geet nudged Pari.

"I'll go first," Pari said.

Channi pulled out a chair for Pari in front of the mirror & gestured for her to sit down. She began working on her face in silence, applying a small drop of foundation first then working on her eyes.

There was a knock on the door - Geet went to open it, & found a young lady standing there with outfits in her hand. Geet stepped aside to let her in.

"Which one of you is Geetanjali?" she asked. Geet raised her hand.

"Go & try this on," she said, giving her a beautiful embroided red lengha.

"Wait," said Channi. "I've done Pari's make up in red, so it makes sense for her to wear the red one."

The young lady gave Geet a gold lengha instead, which was identical to the red one. Geet left the room & took it through to the bathroom. She eyed it skeptically - she wasn't fond of wearing outfits like this.

Reluctantly she tried it on, & went back into her room.

"A perfect fit," the young lady said, smiling. "Now take it off, otherwise you'll ruin it."

Geet sighed as she went back into the bathroom & took it off, making faces at it.

It was now 9am, & the Khuranas set off from their hotel for Hoshiarpur. Savitri Devi sat at the front with their driver, telling him the directions. Maan & Dev were at the back, whispering to each other.

"Bro, this sherwani is really uncomfortable," Dev complained.

"What do you want me to do about it?"

"Isn't yours uncomfortable?"

"Yes, but we can't exactly wear jeans to our engagement, can we?"

Something in Maan's jacket pocket began flashing. Dev looked down at it.

"Bro, what's that?" he asked.

"Huh, oh, my phone."

"You brought your phone to your engagement?"

"Business purposes," Maan lied.

"Aren't you going to take it out?"

Maan reluctantly pulled the phone out. Dev was surprised.

"That's not your phone," he said.

"It is."

"It isn't. That's the latest Blackberry."

"So?"

"You have the old model. Who does that belong to?"

Savitri Devi turned around - Maan hid the phone quickly.

"What's going on?" she asked.

"Nothing," they both said at the same time. Savitri Devi turned back around.

"Bro?"

"Dev, it's none of your business," Maan replied, getting annoyed.

"Ok, fine, sorry I asked," Dev said. The rest of the journey was in silence.

Time was flying by, & it was now 10am. Pari had done her make up, her hair which had been let down loosely, with soft curls running through them.

She changed into her outfit & was now picking out her jewellry. Channi was finishing the final touches to Geet, who kept flinching every time a different beauty product was applied to her face.

After Geet's make up was done, she changed into her gold lengha. She walked back into the room and saw Channi help Pari put her red bangles on.

She picked up the sparkling gold earrings, put them on then put the matching gold bangles on herself. Channi noticed Geet's curly, wild hair.

"Geet, I forgot to do your hair!" she exclaimed. "Come and sit down, quickly!"

Geet was pushed into the small chair whilst Channi took out her straighteners.

"What are you doing?" she asked, panicking slightly.

"Your hair."

"Don't straighten it, I don't like it when its straight."

"I can't do anything else with it, it's too curly."

"But-"

It was too late. Channi had already took a strand of her hair & began straightening it. Geet looked horrifed.

15 minutes later, Geet had beautifully straight hair. But she wasn't happy at all about it. She was looking at her hair as if it didn't belong to her.

"You look beautiful with straight hair," Channi complimented. "I don't know why you don't like it straight."

Geet ignored her & looked at herself in the mirror. She had light make up on, which enhanced her naturally pretty features. Gold jewellry adorned her ears & wrists, but her lengha made up the outfit. It fit her perfectly, covered in beautiful embrodiery. She had gold shoes on to match.

Pari appeared beside her sister, smiling. She looked beautiful too, only in red.

Channi began packing her make up away.

"I'm going to leave now, I have to do another girl's make up."

Geet & Pari turned around.

"Your fiances will be blown away by how stunning you both look. All the best," she said, & left the room, closing the door behind her.

At 11am, the Khuranas pulled up outside the Handa household. They could already hear the hustle & bustle of the engagement preparations. Savitri Devi stepped out of the car first, followed by Maan & Dev. They all stood in awe over how beautifully decorated the house was from the outside.

They made their way inside the house, it looked completely different to how it was a month ago. There were people rushing around everywhere, trying to get everything sorted

*Note: I'm really rubbish at describing decorations, lol, so just imagine the house to look like how it did when Geet decorated the place for Mr Chopra's event back in July & Maan got really angry with her

Rano appeared, wearing a beautiful blue salwaar kameez, and greeted Savitri Devi, then Maan & Dev.

"So, where are my beautiful daughter in laws to be?" she asked.

"They're upstairs, getting ready. You'll have to wait to see them."

The guests that the Khuranas had invited began appearing, & Savitri Devi went over to greet them. Many of them were Maan's business associates, so he went over to see them as well. Dev took the opportunity to try & find a way to sneak upstairs so he could see Pari...

There was only half an hour to go until the engagement officially started. Pari & Geet could hear the loud noise & punjabi music playing downstairs.

"Everyone's already here, my stomach is forming knots," said Pari.

"Relax, breathe, everything will be ok. I don't know why you're getting so tense, all we're doing is exchanging rings."

"It's so much more than that, Geet! What if I trip over or something?"

"You won't trip over, but I will. How is anyone expected to walk in this thing?" she complained, pointing to her lengha. "It's too long!"

"It's supposed to be. Look, my hands are shaking."

"I've never seen you so tense before," said Geet. She got up, poured her sister a glass of water and gave it to her. "Here, drink this, and calm down."

Pari took a sip and handed it back to Geet.

"Remember, I'll be right beside you the whole time," Geet said assuringly.

The Handa household was now very busy & lively as guests from both sides of the family had piled in. Dev hadn't been able to escape upstairs because so many people were coming up to him & congratulating him.

Maan stood away from everyone in a corner, playing around with the mysterious phone that he had in his pocket. Dev saw him & went over.

"Hey, bro," he said.

Maan quickly put the phone away.

"Not long to go now."

As if right on cue, everything went quiet, and Savitri Devi stood in the middle of the stairs where everyone could see her.

"I'd like to thank each and every one of you for attending the engagement party of my beloved grandsons, Maan & Dev. Let's allow the ceremony to begin."

She gestured to Rano, who sent up two local girls from the village to bring Geet & Pari down. Maan & Dev took their positions in the centre of the room, waiting for their fiancees-to-be appear.

There was a knock on Geet's door, then the two girls appeared.

"It's time," said one of them. Geet smiled at her nervous sister as they let the girls lead them out of the room.

All eyes turned to the top of the stairs where Geet & Pari stood, one girl at either side of them. Both Maan & Dev's heartbeat increased when they saw them come down the stairs slowly.

Rano & Mohinder exchanged a smile, & Dadima looked overjoyed. The guests seemed pleased, muttering in agreement and exchanging comments on how beautiful they both looked.

They both reached downstairs and stood opposite Maan & Dev who couldn't take their eyes off them.

Pari looked up at Dev shyly, smiling, who returned the gesture.

Geet avoided all eye contact with Maan, but instead was looking around the room at the guests.

Rano & Mohinder went to stand beside their daughters, & Dadima beside her grandsons. She gave Maan the ring, as he was the eldest. Geet held her hand out and Maan placed the ring on her index finger.

Everyone began clapping as Maan smiled at Geet. Geet, knowing all eyes were on her & her new fiance smiled back.

Geet eyed her ring - it was gorgeous. A silver diamond with a gold band around it. It shone as it caught light.

Savitri Devi then went to Dev and gave him the ring. Dev & Pari stared at each other as he placed the ring on her index finger, a shot of heat running up both their arms at the touch. They smiled happily at each other as everyone clapped once more.

Pari looked down at her ring, her eyes shining with happiness. The ring was identical to Geet's. She met her sister's gaze and they both smiled at each other.

Rano & Mohinder greeted both their daughters. Rano couldn't contain her happiness - it was written evidently across her face. Mohinder looked proud.

Dadima kissed both her grandsons on the cheek, who seemed embarrased but were smiling nonetheless.

Then the guests began to greet the newly engaged couples. Pari seemed shy at seeing all the new faces, but Geet was confident and happily conversed with them. She was also trying to work out which of these people looked like businessmen & women, the people she would soon be working with.

Maan saw everyone engrossed in the conversations and took the opportunity to sneak off upstairs. He stopped outside Geet's room, before opening the door, placing the phone he had in his pocket along with a note on her bed, then creeping back out.
