World Cup Flash BAck

India and Sri Lanka have played considerable matches each against each other. India has manged to beat Sri Lanka on only 2 occasions, viz., 1999 WC & 2003 WC. On 4 occasions, but lose 4 occasions.

In the 1979 WC. Chasing a target of 239, India were all set to win with 132-4. But India lost the match 47 runs.]

In the 1992 WC. The match was initially reduced to 20 overs a side due to rain. A helicopter was used to dry the pitch but as play began rain fell again, washing out the game.

Now in the 1996 WC they met twice in this world cup, but didn't manage to win any of them. First time they met in group stage, Sri Lanka won the toss, who chose to field. SR Tendulkar and M Azharuddin 175 for the 3rd wicket, equal 4th highest partnership for any wicket for India in ODIs at that time. SR Tendulkar scores 137 in that match which helps India to score 271. Sri Lanka scored 42 runs off their first 3 overs, Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets (with 8 balls remaining). Player of the match ST Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) scored 79 from 76 balls with 9 4s & 2 Sixes.

1996 WC, Semi Final
Sri Lanka played brilliantly after a disastrous first over to achieve an unbeatable advantage. But the headlines were devoted to the riot which ended the match. Enraged by an Indian collapse of seven wickets for 22, some home supporters threw bottles on to the outfield and set fire to the seating. Referee Clive Lloyd took the teams off for 15 minutes, attempted a restart and then awarded Sri Lanka the game by default. Nobody questioned the result; India needed a near-impossible 132 from 15.5 overs, with only two wickets standing. But the Indian board smarted at the word default and asked for Sri Lanka to be declared winners on run-rate.
A target of 252 was not necessarily beyond India's batting heroes, however. Tendulkar was stumped by Romesh Kaluwitharana.

Azharuddin gave Dharmasena a return catch, the 100,000 crowd was stunned into silence. That did not last, as the collapse fuelled their fury, and no play was possible after the loss of Kapoor to De Silva's running catch in the deep.

1999 World Cup
Undisciplined Sri Lankan bowling, a pitch of even bounce, short boundaries and batting which ranged from the classical to the brutal set a welter of one-day international records. Ganguly and Dravid's partnership of 318 in 45 overs was the highest in any limited-overs international.

India's 373 for six was the second highest total in limited-overs internationals after Sri Lanka's 398 for five against Kenya in the 1996 World Cup, and thus the highest against Test opposition at that time.
Ranatunga's decision to bowl seemed justified when Vaas cut the ball back sharply to hit Ramesh's off stump. However,Dravid, aggressively, and Ganguly, elegantly, soon gained complete dominance, with even Muralitharan unable to stem the flow of runs. Dravid established himself as the pacemaker, reaching his second successive hundred at almost a run a ball.

2003 World Cup
Jayasuriya arrived with a bad thumb and a bruised forearm; from the moment he inserted India on a decent pitch, he had a colossal headache as well. Sri Lanka's fast bowlers - Vaas apart - were ill equipped for the task, leaving Tendulkar and Sehwag to put on 153, the third and highest century stand they had shared in ten innings opening together.

India's 292 for six looked insurmountable and, by the fourth over of their reply, a misconceived Sri Lankan batting order had proved as much. Atapattu, Mubarak, a static and inexperienced No. 3, Jayawardene, hopelessly bereft of form, and de Silva all went for nought. When Jayasuriya scooped Srinath to Kaif at cover it told of his handicap. Kaif finished with four catches - a World Cup fielding record - Nehra & Srinath take 4 wickets each, but Srinath's four wickets deservedly won the match award and made all India's labours to tempt him out of retirement worthwhile. India's zest and skill had ensured their place in the semi-finals; Sri Lanka could still get there, but they began to wonder quite how.

2007 World Cup

India won the toss & put opposition to bat first. Zaheer Khan takes 2 wicket & Agarkar, Munaf Patel, Sachin & Ganguly takes 1 wicket each. India bowl pretty well to stick them to 254.

Chasing 255, India's top order collapsed, only Sehwag manage to get 48 runs. No one even scored in the midle order, only Dravid manage to score 60 runs but not enough to win that match.

Rahul Dravid stands alone as the Indian innings falls apart around him

India lost by 69 runs.

2011, WILL IT BE A PAY BACK TIME ??

No need to mention about this little man. He has 2965 runs against SL, with an average 45.61 with 8 hundreds and 17 fifties. This WC has been great for him too. With 2 hundreds for him, against England & RSA, the onus of the top order will be again on him. Also, the Wankhede will be more than happy to give Sachin his 100th 100.

He justified his selection in the team and performed so far a real king. He has got 4 MOMs already in this WC. And his ball is doing a lot of talking as well. The most valuable player on this team.

Zaheer Khan

The pace spearhead. And the only Indian pacer doing really on this flat tracks. With 19 wickets so far with an economy rate of just 4.67, he just behind Shahid Afridi in the leading wicket takers list in this WC. Indian bowling will be totally dependent on him and he has to to deliver so that Indians can fancy their chances of a win.
