Two months later
Sameera's and Dev's wedding was a grand affair. Mr.Mittal wanted his daughter's wedding to be the most memorable occasion of her life. Left to themselves Sameera and Dev would have preferred to have a simple wedding, but Mr.Mittal insisted on spending lavishly and celebrated the wedding regally over four days, following all the Marwari customs and traditions. They skipped the engagement ceremony since they were already engaged but the rest of the ceremonies were conducted diligently. The pre-wedding rituals included the Ganapati sthapnagriha shanti ceremony, where the bride and the groom's family performed havan and installed the idol of Lord Ganesha; the pithi dastoor, in which the bride and the groom were applied turmeric paste; the mehfils where both men and women sang and danced in separate groups; and the palla dastoor wherein the bride worshipped Goddess Gauri. The wedding itself was an elaborate affair which included, besides the actual ceremony, the bhaarat and the Grihapravesh. With small babies, Maan and Geet could not be present for all the functions but were there for the main wedding ceremony. As Sameera did not have a sister, Geet and Maan did the ghat bhandhan, leaving the babies with Rano, Baba and Anwesha. As soon as the bridal car left the mandap, the Khuranas and the Handas returned home with the tiny tots who had by then become quite restless and hungry.
That night as Amrita dressed up her daughter for her wedding night Sam was in foul mood.
"Mama why should I wear such heavy jewellery and lehenga when I'll be going to bed anyway? Why can I not change into my night dress?" she cribbed.
"Sh...stop cribbing. This is your first night with your husband. Don't you want to look beautiful for him?" Amrita chided her.
"Mama. Dev has seen me in my best and in my worst. I've lived with him for four months."
Seeing her mother's eyes widen, Sameera hastily added, "Well, I shared his house, not his room. Nevertheless, he knows how I look early in the morning and also late in the night."
"Sammie, trust me. Every custom has its significance. And it is for a reason that the bride is decked up from head to foot on her nuptial night. There is nothing more sensual than your husband seductively removing each and every piece of your jewellery and attire before making you his."
Sameera turned red hearing this and meekly allowed herself to be adorned for her husband.
When her mother had finished decking her up, she kissed her fondly on the forehead saying, "Hope no one casts an evil eye on my beautiful daughter." She then took leave of her, after giving her blessings for her new journey as a married woman.
Sameera waited impatiently for her husband trying hard to stifle her yawns as she felt exhausted after the elaborate celebrations of the past four days. Fluffing up the pillow, she propped it up against the head board of the bed and leaning her aching back against it, she stretched her legs before her. Soon her eyes turned heavy and she dozed off.
In the meantime, Dev finally managed to get away from his ragging friends and made his way to their bedroom. As he stepped into the room, he saw his bride fast asleep on their bed in a sitting position, her head drooping to one side. Although he felt a trace of disappointment at the sight, he soon overcame it and smiling at his bride, he slowly went up to her and seated himself next to her.
Realising that she would feel uncomfortable sleeping in her heavy jewellery, he went about removing them one by one. He slowly unscrewed her long ear rings, lightly caressing her ear as he did so. She shivered a little at the contact but her eyes remained shut. Putting his arm around her, he proceeded to unclasp the necklace. He stopped for a second when she moved her head but seeing that she was still asleep, he swung the necklace over her head and laid it on the side table. Not able to resist, he bent down and kissed the nape of her neck, making her tremble but she still remained asleep. He then took her hands in his and slowly slid her bangles out of them, one by one. Once he finished removing the last of the bangles, he gently kissed her hands. She moved a little but remained asleep. He lifted her fingers and slid her rings from them leaving behind only the engagement ring. He kissed each finger making her quiver at the feel on his lips on her finger tips but she still slept through it all. His hands slid to her waist and reached out for her golden kamarband (waist band). His fingers lightly brushed against her bare midriff before unclasping the kamarband. Again she moved a little but did not open her eyes. He then moved to her feet which were clad in anklets and removed them slowly. She jerked her feet a little but still continued to sleep.
He then removed the 'kundan tikka' head piece before slowly unbraiding her long hair and removing the many pins which was holding it back. Pushing back a stray tendril of hair which had fallen over her eyes, he cupped her face and lightly kissed her lips. She twitched her lips a little but did not wake up. He watched her sleeping face thinking about the same day the previous year when he had kissed her in his inebriated state and she had slapped him. He smiled at the thought and gently pulled her down so that she lay comfortably on the bed. He then got up to change into his night clothes and stretching beside her, he too went to sleep.
The next morning Sameera woke up at 8.00 a.m. Not finding Dev beside her she looked at the clock and realising she had overslept, she rushed to brush her teeth and have a shower. As she stepped out of the bathroom clad in her bathrobe, a towel wound around her head to hold back her hair, she saw Dev enter in with a tray of two tea cups.
"Good morning, sleeping beauty. Hope you had a good night's sleep," he said genially.
"Sorry, I slept through our wedding night," she apologised and taking the tray from his hand she left it on the side table. "You should have woken me up. I was so looking forward to your seductive removal of my jewellery."
"Really?" he asked, smiling mischievously. "I did remove your jewellery seductively but alas you slept through it all. Didn't have the heart to wake you up when you were in such deep slumber."
She blushed and looked down at her feet. He smiled and lifted her face by her chin with his forefinger. She reluctantly met his gaze but the minute she saw the soft eyes so filled with love, she was captivated by them. Holding her gaze, he slowly unwound the towel from her head. Her hair tumbled out and fell below her shoulders. One of the strands fell across her face and got caught between her lips. He stretched out his hand and his fingers caressed her lips as he gently extricated the strands and pushed them behind her ears. Seeing her shiver at the sensation, he leaned forward to envelop her lips in his. As he was very tall, she had to crane her neck up and he had to bend his head down so that their lips met.
As their tongues intertwined, he held her by the waist and drew her close to him. Her blush deepened as she became aware of how much he wanted her. He released her lips and moved his lips to the side of her neck, gently kissing his way down her slender neck, as his hands were busy untying the sash that held her bathrobe together. Having undone the sash, he threw it away and pushed aside the fabric of the bathrobe to uncover her delicate collarbone. Planting butterfly kisses on it he slowly slid the garment down her arms, his lips covering every inch of her that he was unravelling, making her feel weak in the knee.
After a few minutes, he returned to her lips and locked his lips with hers. He swung his arms below her hips and lifted her up so that her face was in level with his, deepening his kiss as he did so. She wrapped her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck, losing her inhibitions and reciprocating with the same intensity. When their need for each other became unbearable, he gently stretched her on the bed, covering her body with his. Even as they ignited each other and their marital bed with the fire of their passion, the tea went cold in the nearby side table, not that either of them cared.
Later as they lay exhausted, she snuggled close to him and buried her head in his chest. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and kissed the top of her head, murmuring, "Wow, you are quite a revelation. When you told me you loved me passionately, I didn't realise just how much, baby. You left me with no doubt after now. I wouldn't tire of receiving as much of this passionate love, ever!"
Sameera punched his chest.
"Ouch! You'll have to stop doing that, though!" He pretended to be cross with her.
She bent her head and kissed him gently where she punched him.
"Unless you do that every time you punch me!" he added.
She smiled and said that he was a wonderful lover too as he made her feel so special. She then hugged him tight, revelling in the knowledge that he will always love her, no matter what.
