Chapter Sixteen
Partial Truth
Dutta watched Naku flee from there like there was no tomorrow as they had made their way downstairs, she'd held her head ridiculously low while holding one corner of her duppatta close to her eye like she was giving it some kind of relief. Before he could ask her anything, she'd already disappeared, and Ayi Sahib had called Dutta over to make a choice for the mangalsutra, so made his way there instead. Yeh kuch light nahin, issme sona zyaada hai, lekin dekhme lagta to nahin said Supriya, finding flaws in everything, when Dutta who was more interested in finding out what was wrong with Naku and was looking in the very direction she left in, wondering if it was her wrist that was still paining her...or maybe it was the unemotional remark he'd made about the mangalsutra, he tried to decide which of the two it was, when Ayi Sahib interrupted his thoughts.....
Eerr...ek kaam keejiye he said to the jeweler without removing his eyes from Naku's abandoned path ......aap sabse keemti aur sabse bhaari mangalsutra dekh ke bijwa dena said Dutta as he got up and left, telling Ayi Sahib he'd remembered a very important job which needed his attention right away, just when he'd caught up with Baji, who was already walking towards Dutta in order to give him the latest update.
Dutta had hinted to Baji through eye contact to follow him and not say anything, which he certainly did, and Dutta led Baji into Naku's room eagerly, wanting to find out if she was okay, and he knew that Baji was closer to Naku on friendship terms and she might feel more comfortable if he was there.
By the time Naku got to her room she could feel the lens on her cheek which had popped it's way out, because of its poor alignment with her eyeball as it was ripped, when Naku felt the jelly type texture on her cheek she tried to grab it in haste .....shocking the living daylights out of her....where did it go...where did it go...as she got grip of it from her cheek, the lens practically slipped out of her hand when she tried to straighten it out in a rush and dropped it to the floor instead, making her go on her hands and knees to hunt for it like a beggar....as she tried to scan the floor as fast as she could...she'd spotted it...thank god she thought as she looked up and thanking Bappa for saving her. She extended her hand out to pick up the brown coloured lens, when from absolutely nowhere a black shoe had stepped on the whole lens...burying it under the leather of ....who was it she thought as she looked up ....Baji !!
Baji out of all people, and he wasn't alone Dutta was standing next to him and they seemed to be staring down at her like they had just witnessed an icha daari nagin transform back into her human form, just like Sridevi from Nagina.
Lekin Roop tu apna naam kyun likha rahi hai, tujhe to nachna bhi nahin aata...questioned Suhana, Roops college mate. I know, but than no one's born with skills and talents now are they, you can learn anything you desire in this world, and you know when you love someone you try to become everything for that one person, you try to become what that person wants to see in you, and when an opportunity like this comes I can't be so stupid not to recognise it as a sign, she said as she hugged her books knowing what she had in mind. What are you referring to asked Suhana while eyeing Roops curiously, Sheila.....she said, mein tumhari Sheila abh ban kar dikhaungi Baji........she promised herself.
Leela, don't you think that Roops is spending too much time with that Naku these days, not to mention that she seems to be sticking to Baji alot, and Bhau is not even doing anything about it...said Kalavathi thinking with one arm folded accross her chest and holding a glass of white wine in the other......
Roops can still be tamed, but what are we going to do about Supriya...kya hume shaadi keliye kapre ka order de dena chahiye questioned Leela back to Kala....
Jab Kalavathi sochti hai...to phir tume apna dimakh laraane ki kya zaroorat hai, shaadi keliye to hum tayaar to honge hi...akhir humare Bhau ki shaadi hai she said while bringing her glass up as to raise a toast for his happiness, aur agar hum iss jashan keliye tayaar nahin honge to kaun hoga...akhir me faida to humara hai na....
Main kuch samjhi nahin Tai....replied a confused Leelavathi
Jo bura na samjhe, bala na samjhe, woh Kalavathi ko kya samjhe...smirked Kala, as she told Leela to worry more about finishing her drink, rather than understanding what was going on around her...when she noticed Kishore standing there, not that it made any difference to her, and to show him her lack of concern for his thoughts, she decided to top up her wine just to get on his nerves, while Leela made her way out, but not before she emptied her glass.
Sahi kaha tumne Kalavathi, kyunki jo bura samajh te hai woh ek taraf hote hai, aur jo bala samajh te hai woh bhi ek taraf hote hai, lekin jo log teri tara na bura samajh te hai naahi bala, sirf wohi beech mein apni taang akar ke latke huwe hote hai...bilkul teri tara he said pointing his finger at her....bilkul ek bali ke bakre ki tarah...aur yaad rakhna Kala ke uss bakre ko halal karne ka waqt bhi zaroor aayega...he warned.
Acha...answered Kalavathi, mujhe halal karne wala agar khud halal pehle ho jayega to tum kya karoge Kishore...hmm...she questioned smartly.
Kisse chetaavni de rahi ho Kala...uss bhagwan ko...jisne hamesha kisi na kisi roop main iss darti par janam liya hai tere jaise rakshaso ka naash karne keliye, he replied equally, cancelling out her smartness.
Yeh kya keh rahe ho Kishore, main to bohut darr gaye, kya tum apne bhagwan se mere liye meri zindagi ki beekh nahin maango ge, she taunted sarcastically, ......kaho to main tumhare liye ek appointment fix kardu bhagwan ke saath...chinta mat karo Kishore tume kahi jaana nahin parega, main tume tumhare bhagwan ke darshan yahi karva deti hoon, she said as she went over and collected a small bag of white fine powder and handed it too him, ye lo Kishore...she said just sniff this powder and wait for a few mintutes for it to work its magic....aur tab dekhna tume har jaga sirf bhagwan hi dikhaye denge, aur iske baad tume bhagwan ko milne keliye mandir bhi nahin jaana parega, she went on making him give her the most disgusted look. Sirf bhagwan hi jaanta hai ke maine apne pichle janam mein kaunse paap kiye honge ke mujhe tum jaisi beizzat aur ghatya aurat ek biwi ke roop me mili. As he left his luggage in his room still unpacked, he had to leave her company before he suffocated, theek hi kaha hai kisi ne he thought to himself 'take care of your character, and your reputation will take care of itself'.
As Kaale's words echoed in both Dutta's and Baji's ears, it was like they were telepathically connected for a minute 'cause they both knew they were thinking the exact same thing, iska matlab hai ke jo... started Dutta, Kaale ne kaha, bilkul theek kaha...finished Baji, as they looked down at an absolutely astonished Naku, who was still crouching down on the balls of her feet, not being able to move.
That was when Baji had decided to close the door, grab Naku by the arm and seat her on the centre of the bed but on the edge, making her look down in absolute shame, and grabbed a nearby chair, pulled it close to her and sat down on it right in front of her, the setting seemed like she was under arrest and the police man was just about to start his questioning before he decided to get dirty, she thought, the only thing that was lacking was the shining lamp they flashed in the criminal's face, the stick in his hand...well Baji had a gun...which was worse, and a bucket of freezing cold water...definately the worst idea for her at this moment, she thought, thinking I hope they give me a chance to explain, and if they did what would I say anyway.......and why was he just standing there, she thought as she looked up at Dutta, why wasn't he saying anything.....was it better he didn't, or was it better he did.....either way it seemed to bother her more than the actual situation she was facing.
To her surprise Baji had actually calmy aproached her, trying to give her time to give her answer, Naku...kya hai yeh sab....tu ye...tu lens pehenti hai...said Baji, dekh Naku hum jaante hai ke tu koel hai...lekin iska yeh matlab to nahin ke tujhe apni har burahi chupani paregi he consoled, aur waise bhi mujhe to nahin lagta ke tere rang se kisi ko koi pharak parega Naku...ho..ek baar tujhse koi mil le to woh to khud ba khud tere pe fida ho jayega......
What is he saying thought Naku, why aren't they angry with me, and why was Saab being so understanding, oh no she thought maybe when he asked earlier if she was wearing lens he'd saw the blue colour shine through the ripped area, but she was sure they weren't ripped than, they just ripped a little while back she thought, so than what the hell is Baji talking about she thought watching Baji console her for some strange reason....
..........teri aankon ka rang itna sudar hai Naku aur tu isse in kaali aankon ke peeche kyun chipaati hai re...aisi sundar ankhein to har ladki chahe gi Naku, tujhe isse chipaane ki koi zaroorat nahin hai.....aur haan Naku isse pehle ke main kuch aur bolu tum apni dusri ankh ka lens nikaal....kyunki mujhe bohut ajeeb lag ra.ich ke teri ek ankh kaali hai aur dusri ankh neeli.....
As Baji asked her to remove her remaining brown lens, she couldn't help looking towards Dutta who was just staring at both of them and watching the whole conversation taking place, when she looked at him as if to ask for permission, he'd nodded his head ever so slightly and closed his eyes in approval, she couldn't help feeling a bit happy, he weren't angry she thought as she took out the lens and looked back at Baji, who was staring at her eye like he was examining it.....and than suddenly he waved his hand in front of her...what the hell was he doing she thought.....tujhe theek se dikhaye to de raha hai na...he said moving his hand around her face frantically like she was blind or something.....uh oh...she thought...they think I'm blind !
She was so shocked at the fact they thought that she wore prescripted lens, she'd just stood up and shouted out ke main andhi nahin hoon ! And than realised that was a bad idea, as maybe if she'd stuck to their story, she wouldn't have to make up a story of her own, but it was too late to be thinking what if.... now, the damage was done.
KYA !!! They both shouted in co-ordination.
As Baji looked at Dutta nodding his head in disapproval, how could Bhau get it so wrong he thought, he had just sat there trying to console this girl for a whole five minutes talking about utter nonsense, he stared at Naku feeling embarassed at himself and decided to tell her his reason behind his logic.
Woh kya hai Naku, ke mujhe laga ke... he started, that you wear glasses, and you needed it for better eyesight, and I....well we... he said looking at Dutta thinking why he should take the blame alone, while Dutta tried to signal him to keep him out of the scenario, but with no luck.....which was always the case with Baji, but now Dutta too was curious to why she would want to cover such beautiful eyes under that dark brown colour.......
Baji decided to ignore Dutta's hint on purpose and went on explaining that we thought that because you've got dark skin.... he said looking a bit ashamed, .....that you didn't want to wear glasses which would make you look more unattractive, and thought that is why you probably chose to hide the fact that you wore prescripted lens, so you could hide your flaws, he went on feeling more embarassed with each word, .....although I really can't understand why you would want to hide such beautiful eyes Naku, I mean you could have got yourself clear lens, but why brown, they don't even let you stand out of a crowd... he said wondering why she would pick such a colour for her eyes.....aur agar tu chashma nahin pehenti, to phir tu yeh lens kyun pehenti hai....he said waiting to hear her side of the story.
Feeling a little scared she knew she had to tell them some truth, as she looked up she could see the two of them waiting to get just a glimpse of her blue eyes, making her insecure as hell, she certainly had to think of a valid point that would make them see sense in a realistic way, and decided to tell that people had always taunted her and throw looks at her thinking she weren't looking, and say things like 'look at the way god gives things to such ugly girls in this day and age', and they would say hurtful things like 'if our daughters had eyes like that, they were sure to get married to some king', when one day my Ayi couldn't take it anymore and she'd got so upset and taunted me in the same manner, she was originally referring to her Ayi covering her with the black soot, but obviously didn't need to tell them that part, and instead told them that her Ayi had just decided to up and leave that place they lived in before as they couldn't bear to live with such ridiculous insults, and her Ayi had decided that she would cover her eyes with the cheapest possible lens in the market, before they moved to a new place, which is where they lived now, and has since than remained a brown eyed girl, until today, she added, with an unusual sadness in her voice, which is where Dutta had finally decided it was time to speak....hmmm....aaj se main teri in ankhon mein woh kaale rang ke lens bilkul nahin dekhna chahata....samjhi.....he said as he looked away from her with his hands behind his back while announcing his decision to her, ......sabko samhjane ki koi zaroorat nahi....yaha tumhe koi sawaal nahi karega....aur haan, he said before leaving ....aaj ka din tum koi kaam nahin karogi, tumhe araam ki zaroorat hai....., knowing she would try to protest, he had put his hand up as in to signal her not to speak and wait for him to finish, .....aur aaj main Kaka ko boldunga ke tum aaj bazaar nahi jo gi....aur jahan tak mujhe yaad hai Kaale ki ankhein bohut tej hai, aur main ussi ko tere kamre ke bahar chod kar jaa raha hoon.....taake woh mujhe batade agar tum mere aadesh ko nazar andaaz karne ki koshish ki, and as he looked at her bandaged hand, he told her abhi jaa kar bistar pe let jao aur aaram karo he said, and when she didn't move he further added, .....kya tum khud lett jao gi...ya phir main tumhe utha kar bistar par ponchao.... he threatened sternly, making Naku run quickly before he could even blink, she was so predictable thought Dutta, she needed the rest her eyes told him so, and she would never ask to have a day off.......in fact he didn't think she knew what relaxing was she would always find a way to keep herself busy, he thought as he nodded to Baji that it was time to leave, closing the door behind them.
Haiiilllaaaaaaaaa Bhau itni neeli ankhein humari koel ki Bhau, said Baji finally being able to release his amazement, ....Bhau yeh koel to sach mein Salman ki Ash nikhli Bhau....he went on blabbering.....while Dutta remained silent the whole time, not registering a single word Baji was saying.

Erm I know I haven't made a big issue of revealing her eyes, but I thought it would be better to keep it simple and have her eyes revealed beforehand, cz it would be a bit ridiculous that when her FR happens she has to reveal her eye colour too, and it wud make the betrayal seem worse on Dutta's side, as it wud all look way too fake....so dat's the reason I kept it like this, hope u guys dn't mind.
Dutta's and Naku's meeting will be in nx update where they will have a little more heart to heart conversations, it was suppose to be in this one, but couldn't fit it in.
Not too much happening in this one, but I still hope you like it.😃
