The truth is that not every person's life is like a Kekta serial. Yes, infidelity is a wide-spread issue today, but it's a thing of the West and it's an idea used in Indian serials to an extent that makes the serials disgusting and not watchable. I know that infidelity happens all over the world, even in India, but this thing-of-the-West has been used in every single serial and to the extent where they're trying to justify it by showing that the lovers share true love and so that's why "it's okay", because they "couldn't help it and had no other way", etc.
Disgusting.
LTL has held onto really strong family values and relationships. Marriage has not been made a mazaak on this show, in fact it has been given respect through Dutta and Naku remarrying for the second time with all the rituals. The show has included other issues such as the smuggling society, human conditions (for instance in terms of traumas from the childhood resulting in a kind of mental instability), sibling jealousy to the extent of bitterness and hatred (because it wasn't treated at the roots, but overseen and given time to grow), people unhappily married yet making things work and trying, honest men at battle with dishonest men, good men protecting their women, bad men who view the woman as an object of desire, but don't succeed in their dirty deeds, good vs. evil but good always prevailing.
These things made LTL stand out.
When I first began to watch the show (during DN's first wedding), I actually thought that Dutta was going to rape Naku as a punishment. Boy. I was really stupid. I hadn't understood his character at all, or the forces behind this show. I thought it might turn out like any other show where - to the writers - the most natural thing on a SR is raping your wife if she isn't willing herself, especially if the marriage is forced like Naku's was and they are showing the man to be arrogant, proud, and one of power.
Then what's stopping him, right? Aren't men's minds always in the gutter? (According to Kekta serials, then yes.)
But here was a man, arrogant and proud and powerful, who was also honest and good at heart and innocent. Raping Naku was far from his mind, it was nowhere near his mind. I was so surprised when he only spoke to her, threatened her, etc. I was like: "So... when is he raping her?" Because I was ready to switch onto any other show if he did.
It never happened.
Even when he punished her, he didn't even once cross the line in terms of intimacy - he respected her as a woman, even if he thought he hated her at that point.
LTL is pathbreaking in Indian serials, in my opinion. It has broken all those formulas and created its own unique one. It has stayed down-to-earth, conveying heartbreaking human conditions, and most importantly - it has taken some really typical characters (such as a gangster) and made him utterly complex, layered. Given him a dark past, but a pure heart.
LTL has created relationship with feelings that run deep. Blood isn't everything. There were bonds in this family that went beyond blood. True bonds, so strong, stronger than blood. I've never seen such a beautiful friendship as DuJi's. They were epic in terms of brothers and friends. I can mention more, but then this will turn into an essay.
I feel heartbroken right now, because such a beautifully unique show was changed so radically, and in the end - destroyed - because of Colors' massive meddling ego. They ruined so much of the show that I couldn't ever forgive them, not even if they tried to fix things now. Which they won't.
In the end, I will always remember what LTL was, not what it turned into. For me, the past three months haven't happened. I know that the writers had other plans with DSP, Naku, even Madhu, but the channel messed those plans up and they had to change everything in January.
I'm done with Colors. Period.
