I still can't get over last night's episode. Karunya was outstanding.
I was a little worried when I read the updates and posts. But when I watched the show, I was amazed at the immense talent this boy has.
My observations of last night's performances are:
The first song which Karunya sang was very good. A lot of people might have felt a passion missing. But that is only coz they compare it with the original, which is a very popular song and one of Sonu's best. Karunya did not sing the song in Sonu's style. He retained his originality both in terms of voice and variations. That infact requires a lot of confidence, for it would have been a lot more easier for any singer to simply imitate the original. Full credit to Karunya for his originality.
Afreen Afreen - Nusratji's songs are very difficult to sing. it needs a lot of courage and confidence to pick this song. Once again, Karunya showed he does not lack in courage. He was flawless, smooth and extremely balanced. 10/10 for his courage and for his perfection in the technicalites.
Song number 3 - this song in itself is a master-piece. singing this song and that too in front of sonu is quite a challenge, for everyone knows that sonu regards Rafi saab as the ultimate singer. Sonu cannot accept anyone doing justice to any of Rafi's song, not even himself. Karunya would have surely known that Sonu will be hard to please with this song. And yet, he was prepared to take up this song, he was prepared for the challenge. He brought tears in the eyes of all of us in front of the TV. Like Javed Akhtar pointed out, it is not easy for a 19 year old new entrant to sing on par with Rafi saab. Kudos to Karunya for his ability to take up challenges, for his determination and hard work.
Folk song - that song was a piece of cake for Karunya. He knew his strengths and used them all to the fullest. There was all the energy, liveliness and ease which this song needed. He had everyone in our house tapping our feet. And I admit, I was not particularly fond of this song until last night. Hats off to his versatality.
What is it that we are looking for in Indian Idol? A person who has a great voice, who is versatile, who is presentable, who can have the audience hooked, who is strong in technical aspects of singing, who knows his strengths and is very confident of his abilites, who is capable of taking up challenges, who does not fear hard work, whose focus remains undetered despite all the odds, and is determined to win the title so that he can give good music in the times to come.... Simply put - an Indian Idol has to be a complete package.
And where else can you find a better candidate than Karunya????
