A good weekend watch
Pyaar Mein Twist is a hilarious take on newly married couple Amol and Rekha who are totally opposite in nature. Amol, played by Manish Paul, is a sad, middle class, boring guy who has no sense of fashion, whereas Rekha, played by Roshni Chopra, is chirpy, rich and fashionable. The show focusses on the trials and tribulations of this mismatch couple as they try to live their life while facing the complicated situations created by the society at large.
The show starts with Amol as a narrator who is seen describing the events of his life, how he loves Rekha and gets married to her. The show thus shuttles between the past and the present in the initial episodes. Amol is a disciplined and faithful guy who has been in love with Rekha since his college days. But he knows that he will never be able to win her affection, thanks to his geeky avatar. Rekha is a super glam girl, who despite being approached by various college guys, has always been single as she believes in having a dilwala boyfriend/husband rather than a richie. For five years, Rekha has never noticed Amol but one day Amol saves her from some hooligans who try to attack her at a college camp. Despite being pressurised by her mother to get married to a rich but stupid guy, she listens to her heart and chooses Amol as her life partner. From thereon, the story focusses on the various problems that Amol faces after having a good-looking wife.
Both Roshni and Manish look fresh and make an interesting pair. Manish proves pretty convincing as Amol. Oiled hair, thick black rimmed specs, checkered shirts or kurtas and crisp ironed formal pants with his skilled and polished acting makes him look like a complete loser, as demanded by the script. While the effervescent Roshni looks quite disappointing in some parts where she needs to act snobbish. It becomes difficult to relate to her as we have usually seen her in an affable avatar. For example, in the introductory scene, where she comes out of her car and slaps a guy who tries to get close to her or the scene where she throws away all the roses that she receives in college, Roshni fails to make an impact. But later as the story unfolds, the chemistry between her and Manish is quite loveable.
Apart from the leads, the show's other characters are also entertaining. Amol shares his apartment with two roommates, who are nothing but a pain in his neck. Then there is Rekha's family which consists of her pricey and dominating mother, played by Bharti Singh (the one from the reality show Comedy Circus) who resides in a king -size villa with a personal secretary and four useless servants. Apart from these, there is Amol's boss played by the veteran actor Rakesh Bedi, who hates marriages and likes Amol for his punctuality and hard work.
Though the show starts off on a good note, it might be a challenge to sustain for a long time, keeping in mind that the beauty and the beast theme has been used in many TV shows and films.
Verdict: ***
Between all the kitchen politics and the dramatically-scripted reality TV shows, Pyaar Mein Twist comes as a breath of fresh air and can be touted as a complete family entertainer.
With the looks of it, Pyaar Mein Twist can compete with the shows from the channel that screams in their slogan jab dekho sab dekho.
