Valentine's Day has absolutely no relevance in my life
Karan Johar equates the day with film awards. The year you get one you believe in it, otherwise it's rigged
I've never celebrated Valentine's Day. In my 38 years, I've never ever been in a serious relationship so it means nothing to me and you resent what you don't have! So I feel it's frivolous and stupid and nothing but Hallmark-created to sell their cards.
"There's some St Valentine history to it which I don't know the details of. Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate with your loved one or spouse or whatever. So since my mother is my loved one we wish each other Happy Valentine's Day. We've been doing it for years for fun. If you're single, I look at it as a day to celebrate with close friends, be it girls or boys.
"My cousin wants the Koffee With Karan hamper to gift his girlfriend on Valentine's Day!"

"In my 38 years I have never bought a Valentine present for anybody. I've never ever got a present either, how tragic. So Valentine's Day has absolutely no relevance in my life. As I said, so now you mock it and say, what rubbish. But the day I fall deeply in love and I'm in a relationship, it'll be the most important day of my life.
"It's like film awards. Take them seriously the year you get them. Otherwise, you announce that they're all about TRPs and they are all rigged. The year you get the award you have to say how it is an honour and you must feel how important it is. Similarly with Valentine's Day. I equate it with film awards.
"It's definitely a day for merchandise, it's definitely a day for consumer sales and I'm sure there are various organisations and shops who hype and elevate it and when people fall in love they fall for all these things beautifully. So I've seen women being presented with huge, heart-shaped solitaires and handbags are bought, jewellery is exchanged. I've seen it all around me. Valentine's is a big thing for some people.
"Now that I'm making a high school film called Student Of The Year with three young newcomers, Valentine's Day just might creep in!"

"It's a young, teenage, going-into-first-love kind of celebration. And it is wonderful. Love is positive, so why not celebrate it? Now with BBM being so active, on
Feb 14 I'm sure everybody will be putting up hearts and flowers will be sent. But when you're in a rock solid marriage for very many years then your anniversary should matter more – I hope.
"I'm not cynical about it. I'm not anti-Valentine's at all. If somebody is celebrating love how can you be anti that? You've got to have a deep level of cynicism to get upset with people sending each other red hearts or balloons. You make fun of it when you don't have it which is what I do. On Feb 14 I hope I'm not anywhere in town with people around me gushing over Valentine's while you're all alone and wondering, oops, what do I do now? When you're in the city you feel compelled to report on what you did on Valentine's Day.
"When I was in college it was a big deal. A boy giving a girl a rose or a card on campus or a classroom was a big thing. Girls would walk in wondering how many roses they'd collect. It was like Rose Day. Similarly Valentine's was also celebrated with cards and flowers. But that time also nobody gave me anything.
"In all my 38 years I've never ever been in a serious relationship and you resent what you don't have!"

"Actually now fans send me Valentine's gifts. For the last couple of years I've been getting cards. Last year a Turkish fan sent me a red heart-shaped pillow!
"I think we're lowest in the world when it comes to celebrating Valentine's Day. It's just picking up in India. Of course it's not part of our culture but nor is Father's Day, Mother's Day.
If you're celebrating love it's a good thing. Valentine's Day could also be a trigger to a beautiful relationship, it could be the beginning of something special, it could be an excuse for a boy and a girl to get closer to each other especially for those who have issues of expression.

"If card companies are doing well and chocolates are selling, what's the problem? It's a good thing. Already I got a call from a cousin of mine saying he wants the Koffee With Karan hamper to gift his girlfriend on Valentine's Day because it's red and all that.
He asked me, can you get me a hamper, I'll buy it, my girlfriend will be so excited if it's the Koffee With Karan hamper. Chalo, I'm vicariously helping the Valentine's cause!
"I've never had Valentine's Day in my films, I've had Karwa Chauth. But now that I'm making a high school film called Student Of The Year with three young newcomers, Valentine's Day just might creep in!"
