Article on wizard genes in 'Current Science'
Harry and Hermione grace the cover of the most recent issue of Current Science Magazine, which asks the question: "Wizard or muggle, could the chances of becoming one lie in a person's genes?" Here's an excerpt from the article (you may want to dust off that old biology textbook before reading it!): Jeff Craig, a geneticist at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, together with education researchers Renee Dow and MaryAnne Aitken, suggests that wizardry arises from a recessive allele (w) that gives people magical powers. The muggle version (M) of the same gene is a dominant allele. Only a child who inherits one wizard allele from each parent (ww) can become a wizard. If the child inherits two muggle alleles (MM), he or she won't have magical powers.A basic Punnet square is also included in the article, which estimates that approximately 25% of children would have magical powers in the world of Harry Potter, a figure that we know is much too high based on several things Jo has said in the past. The full article can be read here, thanks to reader Jewal! |

Warner Brothers has charged Bajaj Auto Ltd., a motor company located in India, with copyright violations. Jadoo, an Indian television show, has been running ads with a character that bears striking resemblance to our favorite boy wizard. A spokesman for Bajaj had the following to say:
The West feels that anyone in a red bikini is Baywatch and any flying boy is Harry Potter. Our concept of Jadoo is unique and we don't believe it's copied from Harry Potter....We feel the claim is exaggerated.
