| Indian Idol – Homecoming Reveals Battle Between Mass & Class | Sprout | | | | | Emotions ran high on the Homecoming Episode of Indian Idol! The stark contrast between the way N.C. Karunya and Sandeep Acharya were received in their home-states was revealed! And Karunya's visit to Hyderabad stole the show when compared to Sandeep's visit to Bikaner!
Mini Mathur and Aman Verma were necessary evil that started the show – all the while I am thinking that the episode could have done without their unnecessary participation! Same old story – they tried to gauge the Mumbaites state of mind by asking them, "Who will be the next Indian Idol/!" Obviously, it was a tie between Karunya and Sandeep!
First I will attack Sandeep Acharya!
Sandeep Acharya went home to Bikaner and the thing that irritated me the most was the fact that Sandeep compliant a lot – it took me xyz hours to move from Point A to Point B! My shirt is torn!
Hello, Sandeep – these people are waiting for you in the scorching sun and are responsible for your unwanted stay on Indian Idol, be grateful you twit!
Secondly, I hated the fact that all the folks in Bikaner said that Sandeep winning the title means he would do India proud, Rajasthan proud, Bikaner proud! Who knew it was Bikaneri Idol we were watching?
Sandeep had a grand welcome – he was asked to ride a camel and had numerous flower garlands round his neck! I will be truthful – maybe I watch too many mafia movies, but at one point I thought, a sniper should shoot Sandeep from the roof! I know it was a ridiculous thought, but that's what it was a ridiculous thought!
Sandeep meeting his mum was rather sweet moment – Sandeep's mum fed him food using her own hand after hugging him! His dad was visibly proud of his son and said that he wanted Sandeep to finish his education before he ventured into music field but Sandeep proved him wrong by reaching such a stature! Mr. Acharya I am sorry, it was not Sandeep, who proved you wrong; it was the population of Bikaner!
Sandeep met his grandfather and his grandfather was in tears and so were his grandfather's brothers! Then Sandeep went for a grand reception to his sister's house! Here some guy stated that there are groups of individuals who vote for Sandeep, night and day, because he is the Bikaneri Idol! Seriously, it is more about the state than the voice or talent!
Now, here's something I was told yesterday, apparently if one wants to vote for Indian Idol – each call costs like RS – 25! I don't believe this, because if people are calling in with hundred votes and more – that's like RS. 2500 per night – do people have that kind of money?
Anyway, a phone booth owner revealed that most people in Bikaner think that even hundred votes cannot help – so they vote with more votes! So finally we all know why he survived as long as he did! And now that it is Final Two – they would go in a crazy overdrive!
Sandeep then visited his school and met up with the faculty and principal, who warmly received him, I must say that one individual hugged him for the camera – I am not sure who that was – but the hug was an afterthought!
Anyway, I am sure I am missing more moments, but minus TiVo – this is the best I can do!
I would say that Sandeep's homecoming was a mass affair – nothing but a blatant favouritism from his home-state, not that it is wrong, but when compared to Karunya – his visit was as lacklustre as his singing!
On the other hand –
N.C. Karunya's visit was just awesome, because maybe it was an intentional edit that made Karunya shine or maybe it was natural, but the fact is Karunya home-coming was a polished affair!
The Mayor of Hyderabad went to the airport to receive Karunya – Karunya received a traditional welcome with huge flower garlands and a red tika on his forehead! I must say he looked rather nice! He was then taken home in an open automobile, while his friends travelled in front on the bikes carrying banners etc about Karunya!
Karunya's mum and dad were at the airport and Karunya's mum – who by the way is as classy as Amey Date's mum, said that Karunya's long absence from the home did not hit her till she saw her son and she could not control her tears! Karunya's dad again repeated that he missed Karunya's Riyaaz at 4 AM each day Karunya was away!
Karunya introduced his sister as his best friend and then he introduced his grand-mum who was extremely sweet lady! Karunya confessed that one thing he missed the most in all the months he was away was the food his mum's homemade food! And just like Sandeep's mum, Karunya's mum fed Karunya with her own hand!
I asked my mum why she never fed me, she asked me, "Are you two?" I was like well, no but neither are they! So my mum said, "Well, become an Idol, and bring home a camera crew and I will feed you!" Ladies and gentleman, introducing me Mum!
Anyway, on the trip home, Karunya stopped and paid homage to Saint Tyagaraja – one of the Carnatic Musical Trio! At home, Karunya showed the viewers the painting of all the Trio, Saint Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikmanureaar and Shyama Shastri!
He said that whatever he sang in Carnatic Classical was a creation of these divine singers!
It is true that the trio have left behind numerous compositions in various Ragas and most Kacheris of Carnatic Classical would have at least one composition of the trio! However, here's something more interesting, in South any great singer/composer is revered like a God! And hence it did not surprise me that Karunya bowed his head to the saint even before going home!
After his rest, Karunya left to meet the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and then left to meet a Telugu Movie Superstar Nagarjuna – both dignitaries have started a campaign to make sure Karunya wins – I just hope the South Indians wake up and vote for Karunya! Interestingly, Karunya carried a bouquet of flower for Nagarjuna and Nagarjuna said, "Shouldn't I be giving you something?" Nagarjuna – You are already giving him what he needs the most – Support!
Then Karunya introduced the viewers to a Doctor, who has literally taken time out from his professional duties to let people in Hyderabad know about Karunya's talent!
Here's the greatest contrast – he said I go to people and tell them to see the show and I tell them vote for any person whom you find the best singer! And if you think Karunya is the best, vote for him! And added that he was sure that they would vote for Karunya because he is the best! If that's not playing fair – what is?
Karunya also kick started Polio Eradication Programme by immunizing a baby with drops!
Karunya also visited his school, where the entire faculty and the Principal were visibly proud of their student and had kind words for Karunya's talent! Karunya was very overwhelmed and started crying, when young students performed a song written and composed exclusively for Karunya!
At the end of such a beautiful journey, Karunya performed his hits for people of Hyderabad and stated that he was amazed at the love he was receiving, and stated that he cannot recall people of Hyderabad participating in any such concerts in the past, and added that best to his knowledge – he does not think there has been such a show in Hyderabad either, and in such a case, he felt great that he was the first performer who could break the barriers!
Interestingly, few said that they were glad that Karunya was from Hyderabad – most just said he had a great voice and that was all that was required!
Karunya's visit was a class act! I mean just look at the planning – Sandeep's visit was all about the masses – people of Bikaner!
I frankly do not worry about Karunya not getting the title, because though he deserves it, I think his failure might snowball into a rage and if I know Reality Television, if a deserving individual is sent home – he becomes a martyr!
Karunya not getting the title would be a big blow to Sony, because this is all about right investment and people who are trying to keep Sandeep around are doing it for all the wrong reasons – refer to Uttam's brilliant take on this!
Karunya not getting the title just might backfire and maybe his records would sell more than Sandeep's ever will! Besides, this is an International site and so many NRIs have stated their support for Karunya – if that's not ensuring success – what is?
I must admit seeing this episode I was feeling too overwhelmed – it was like you are seeing a best friend reaching a great height and in your heart you feel so happy that you want to shed some tears of joy!
As far as I am concerned – Karunya won!
Just to make sure though –
VOTE FOR N. C. KARUNYA!
Nav will add personal views on the board!
Now, I want y'all to add anything I might have missed!
Y'all are dolls!
Let the review continue!
