How about India legalising radio tagging and putting it to good use against all the illegal immigrants in the country. Would that amount to violation of human rights?
Put it on their legs so that they too can be monitored.😆Originally posted by: blue-ice

If radio tags are modern and trendy the US Official should use one too.
What's Wrong With Ankle Monitors?
By Shefali Anand
Why are Indians so mad about the ankle monitors that immigration officials have asked some Indian students who were in the United States studying at an allegedly fake university to wear? One American official is stumped about that.
nkle monitors are "very hip and happening" and are even worn by American movie stars and celebrities, according to a U.S. government official in India. When these celebrities are charged for drunk driving or other offences, they "choose the anklet rather than sitting in the red jumpsuit in prison," said Juliet Wurr, a public affairs officer in the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad in an interview to NDTV.
Sure enough, Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan has reportedly been asked to wear an ankle monitor in recent years to keep track of her alcohol levels. If that doesn't make ankle bracelets cool, then what does?
But the example of La Lohan may not appease Indians who are upset over the ankle monitors that some Indian students who were studying at Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, California, are now sporting. The university was shut down last month by U.S. officials who called it a "sham university" set up primarily to facilitate foreign nationals to enter the U.S. illegally. A large number of the university's students are Indians, and authorities are now investigating their role.
The ankle monitors were issued to some of the students as a way to keep track of their movements. However, India doesn't view it so benignly. On Sunday, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna called the monitors "inhuman" and said "Indian students are not criminals." He called for the monitors to be removed immediately.
In response, the U.S. Embassy in India on Monday said in a statement that these monitors were widely used in the U.S. as a standard procedure and they do not "necessarily imply guilt or suspicion of criminal activity."
Ms. Wurr definitely can't understand what the fuss is all about. "Funny people getting upset about this," she said on Tuesday, adding that her servants wear "big, heavy, silver anklets that look a heckuva lot more uncomfortable and binding than what I've seen on television."
A spokesman for the U.S. Consulate in New Delhi declined to comment.

A mountain is being made of a molehill with this issue. I think Indians don't understand how common the ankle monitor is. Its considered a much more dignified option when you don't particularly deserve jail time or detention. If the officials perceived you as a criminal threat, you would not even receive the bracelet option.
Its supposed to be taken as a trendy symbol according to a US consulate official. However according to MEA sources a deputy chief of mission, Donald Lu, in the absence of the US ambassador has expressed deep regrets at the insensitive remark made byOriginally posted by: blue-ice
