Honestly, I despised Snape for the longest time. I thought he was a miserable old man who had nothing better to do than to pick on Harry and his friends. However, when his past came into view, my outlook on Snape took a 360 degrees turn.
Snape loved Lily. Lily loved James. James tormented Snape for a long time. Imagine the love of your life getting married to your worst enemy. That would sting A LOT! And then they have a child, made from love. And imagine having to protect that child. The child that was sort of the symbol of you not getting the one you loved. Yet Snape loved Lily enough to protect Harry Potter, Harry, who looked more like James. Snape protected Harry from a lot of things. He even risked his life for him sometimes. Also, Snape was very loyal to Dumbledore. He risked his own soul to fufill Dumbledore's request of his killing.
Now, Im not advocating that Snape was the best person. Snape had his faults too. He was selfish, prideful, egoistic, etc. Also, it was his fault that Voldemort went after the Potter's in the first place. Yet he also had a good side. You put it the best way possible, Heroic Villain.
As someone else pointed out, the best thing about the Harry Potter serious is that everyone has some flaws. No one is clean cut. JK Rowling wrote some awesome literature.
