Sensational debutants of 2010 - Male

By Nikhil Ramsubramaniam, December 23, 2010 - 12:50 IST

The year 2010 saw a whole bunch of newcomers make their debut on the silver screen. However, not all of them showed promise. In this first part of a two part series, Bollywood Hungama's Nikhil Ramsubramaniam takes a look at some Sensational Debutants (Male) of 2010.

Ali Zafar (Tere Bin Laden)

Not many singers have been able to make successful careers in acting; hence there was always some amount of scepticism when news broke out that Pakistani pop sensation Ali Zafar was to make his acting debut in the satirical comedy Tere Bin Laden. However, the moment the film opened at the cinema halls, people were pleasantly surprised that this 'Good Looking Ullu Da Patha' can indeed act. Tere Bin Laden emerged as one of the surprise hits of the year and even industry bigwigs like Salman Khan and Karan Johar raved about the latest sensation - Ali Zafar. What's more, he has even bagged a plum role in the Yash Raj film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Way to go Ali!

Pradhuman Singh (Tere Bin Laden)

Noida-based Pradhuman Singh never thought he would play the role of the most wanted man on the face of Earth! But that is exactly what happened when Pradhuman was offered to play the pivotal role of an Osama Bin Laden lookalike in Tere Bin Laden. To say that Pradhuman took to the character like a fish takes to water would be an understatement. The actor even was dressed in his Osama get-up during the promotions of the film so much so that when he finally revealed his actual look, it took a lot of people by surprise. Here is certainly one actor to look out for in the days to come.

Omkar Das Manikpuri (Peepli LIVE)

In the month of July and August the whole nation was concerned about the fate of one man named Natha. 'Kya Natha Jeeyega Ya Marega' became the hot topic of discussion among one and all. Even as the nation got gripped by the Natha frenzy, the man at the centre of it all, Omkar Das Manikpuri (who played Natha in Peepli LIVE) remained unfazed. Hailing from a small village of Chhatisgarh, Omkar has been an active part of Habib Tanvir's folk-theatre company. But never in his wildest dreams would he have thought that he would go on to become a household name and face thanks to his lead role in an Aamir Khan production. This diminutive actor surely had all his dreams fulfilled (even that of meeting actress Deepika Padukone) courtesy Peepli LIVE which would always be a turning point in his career. We can't wait to see more of this powerhouse of talent.

Rajat Barmecha (Udaan)

They say 'Big things come in Small packages'. This saying couldn't be more apt for anyone else other than Rajat Barmecha- the boy who played the troubled teenager Rohan in the path-breaking film Udaan. Rajat's portrayal of a rebellious teenager, who wants to pursue his dreams, instantly won him appreciation from all quarters. If he is even half as good in his forthcoming films, this new kid on the block will be a name to reckon with in the days to come.

Ranveer Singh (Band Baaja Baaraat)

When the first promos of Band Baaja Baaraat hit the airwaves, not many people approved of the leading man Ranveer Singh. His unconventional looks even set tongues wagging that he's bagged the film on the basis of his businessman dad's clout. However, the boy from Bandra preferred to stay mum and patiently waited for his debut film to hit the screens on Dec 10. Once the first day first show was over, the verdict was all over that this boy can act and how. So effective was his portrayal of the 'Delhi ka launda' Bittoo Sharma that soon the very same critics who dismissed him began singing his praise calling him the Superstar of the future. Surely Ranveer's has been among the most promising debuts of this year.

Karan Patel (City of Gold)

After having made his presence felt on the small screen in serials such as Kasturi, Kasamh Se and Nach Baliye, T.V. actor Karan Patel made his big screen debut in Mahesh Manjrekar's City Of Gold. The film, which was also released in its Marathi version, Lalbaug Parel saw the young, good looking actor getting a lot of praise for his portrayal of the feisty Naru. Even though the film didn't exactly set the Box Office on fire, it certainly helped Karan Patel get noticed in a big way.
