I'm sure many of you have questions like what are TRPs and how are they calculated 😊. So here is a brief description of the process:

What are TRPS...and how do they work
Television Rating Points - TRP is the criterion that indicates the popularity of a channel or programme and this data is very useful for the advertisers. Based on these points for a particular show ,they decide whether to sponsor the show or not.. If a show gets high TRPs, it gets huge number of sponsors and in return channel gets huge revenues from that show but if a show gets low trps, its sponsors reduce and so channel stops getting good revenues from that show. This is the reason why shows are pulled off air for low trps.
Presently, INTAM (Indian Television Audience Measurement) is the only electronic rating agency functioning in India. INTAM uses two methodologies for calculating TRP.
First is frequency monitoring, in which 'people meters' are installed in 8000 sample homes around 4 major cities in India and these electronic gadgets continuously record data about the channel watched by the family members. 'People meter' is a costly equipment, which is imported from abroad. It reads the frequencies of channels, which are later, decoded into the name of the channels and the agency prepares a national data on the basis of its sample homes readings. But there is a drawback in the technique, as cable operators frequently change the frequencies of the different channels before sending signals to the homes. It may be very misleading to read a channel according to a particular frequency even if the down linking frequency is same all over India. And so the channels like star one with small net reach suffers the most in this case.
Second technique called picture matching technique is more reliable and relatively new to India. In picture matching technique people meter continuously records a small portion of the picture that is being watched on that particular television set. Along with this, agency also records all the channels' data in the form of small picture portion. Data collected from the sample homes is later on matched with the main data bank to interpret the channel name. And this way national rating is produced. In this case also only 8000 homes around 4 major cities in India are taken into consideration, but this technique is rarely used.
Which TRPS are exactly followed by the Channel..
Every Wednesday Official TRP list of all shows and channels for their last week performance is released by TAM(Television Audience Measurement group) and are send to the respective channels. The same list is then send to the official website of TAM which is www.indiantelevision.com website where they do their own calculation based on that given list using certain formulas and then decide the ranking of all the shows and put the top 100 shows on their website every thursday or friday. In this website TRPs might differ from the original list which is submitted to the channel because of some calculation errors...like for eg: If Geet gets a trp of 1.1 on tuesday which is the highest for that week..then on Indiantelevision website it will show 0.8..so we will hv to assume that 1.1=0.8...as long as a show can keep its trp around 0.9 to 1.0 it comes in top 100 shows...if it goes below 0.8 then its out of top 100...Channel keeps a check on this website to see the channel's overall ranking that they achieve every week...Other all websites providing trps r not valid as per the channel's interest..
overall its poor indicator of viewership..........8000 out of 100 crore wah kiya sampling hain......
