Meet the Plain Janes of television
Buzz up!
Dhanashri Kulkarni/Hill Road Media

It's a new trend that has gained popularity. Our leading ladies look simple, but have high morals. This makes the show more realistic and this has been well-appreciated by the audience. We take a look at some of these actresses who have dared to be different and won accolades for it.

Gauri of Sanjog Se Bani Sangini
Gauri and Pihu are opposite poles. Gauri is simple girl who believes in pure love and sacrifice as compared to Pihu who is very egoistic and not at all concern about the feelings of others.

Simple and traditional yes, plain Janes? I think the writer does not know the meaning of the word, Plain Jane. A Plain Jane is someone who is very plain in how she looks and dresses. In a story they often struggle to get the guy's attention and there is some comment made in the storyline to point ot how she struggles with it. During the course of the story there is a "make-over:" which consists of MORE than a change of clothes (in SSBS and other shows this is typically what I have seen).

In the US, examples of such transformations have been seen in films like "Strictly Ballroom," "She's the One" and "Miss Congenality."
I think the writer of the article should have stuck with this as a title - Meet Traditional and Sacrificial Maidens..

hmm agree to an extent, but plain jane's don't mean sacrificial either...which most of these characters are even if they were not meant to be e.g sia.
Plain jane comes from jane Eyre, the plain (not beautiful but not ugly) character, but her character was very strong - moral and uprighteous, determined and vivacious! she definitly didn't accept life in a sacrificial way though.
I think it's more about beauty being in the eye of the beholder, for this article is rather biased! only some of the girls are truly plain.
Many more lead actresses could have been added to the plain jane list - e.g Pratigya's pooja Ghor, Tapasya is 😆 just odd looking, nakusha is scary without her brown make-up and that's saying something lol
I think Iccha is very beautiful, binny is not a 'plain jane'!!! lol Gopi is cute pretty. They're just not in glamorous make-up and attire that's the difference.

Jane Eyre is a good example. The characters in listed are all played by attractive women but they are all presented in a simple manner but not as Plain Jane's. Pratigya's Pooja is supposed to be an attractive woman, so attractive that too men fight over her. Sorry but she is not an example of one. Gauri could have been one but earlier on in the show when her Nani was harressed during a vocal performance, Gauri came to her rescue. The audience actually cheered her on commenting on how pretty and young she looked. Plain Jane's do not get that type of response. Plus we have never had anything in the storyline to suggest she is a Plain Jane. She dresses simply because she is NOT rich and cannot afford the type of clothes that belong to Pihu.
