Scientists have announced that a baby boy was born recently to a 42-year-old woman from an embryo frozen 20 years ago. Not surprisingly, the idea of frozen embyos has found instant takers. Its proponents defend it on the ground that it will allow greater freedom to career-oriented women to decide about their pregnancy.
Not surprisingly, It has its share of detractors.
In vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer were designed as medical procedures to give infertile couple a chance to establish a pregnancy. What should have been an elective therapy to be used in extraordinary situations is now becoming a norm.
Furthermore, there are ethical questions surrounding the future of leftover embryos. They are living beings that are not implanted but are frozen. How do we dispose of such human lives, which now run into millions in advanced countries like the UK and US? Even worse, the inter-generational donation will complicate and spoil family relations. For instance, how do we cope up with situations when an infertile daughter uses the eggs of her mother to give birth to her own half brother or sister? How would we answer a daughter who questions why she was left frozen as an embryo for decades? It is difficult to evade such ethical and religious questions.

This is against bio ethics and should be used in extreme cases of infertility where other modes of treatment have failed.

This shouldn't be offered to post pone pregnancy beyond a certain age (say 40).

Also we do not knwo the long term out come, are they prone to genetic disorders/mutations we will know only after 50 years.

Let mother nature have free run, otherwise some thing like Jurassic park will follow.

In Jurassic park all dinosaurs were female. They were not intended to breed or reproduce on their own. However, frog DNA was used to fill in missing links. Frogs have been known to change gender in order to reproduce. The dinosaurs did the same, they changed gender and started reproducing.

I don't think he means to say dinosaurs will come out of wombs. 😆 I think he means that intruding in nature can have unintended and even dangerous consequences.

My ethical framework will cause most people to fume here. Personally, I don't consider an embryo to be "full human life". So I don't view it in terms of "human rights" and "ethics". To me embryos and embryonic cells can be used for research. If frozen embryos lead to life later, good for it. If there are too many, they can be incinerated. I'm all for frozen embryos. It takes us one step towards Bokanovsky process.

As for intergenerational donation. I'm of the opinion that if one cannot conceive and want a child, they should adopt. Adoption gives loving parents a child they yearn and a real child a chance for a better life. In our world we don't really need IVF, surrogacy, and now frozen embryos. However, for some reason humans have this notion of having their "own" child. So if we support this "own" child notion instead of compassion - there really no place where we can draw the line and say this is it. Scientifically its just different options of technology.

As for why a child was a frozen embryo, its just as loaded as (if not easier) answering a child why their real mother gave them up.
