Hey wonderful members! I hope you all are doing well and enjoying this month of festivities! =] So I figured why not open a topic for discussion.

How do you guys feel about actresses acting after marriage? Should they? Or should they not? Most of our leading ladies of the industry stopped acting after getting married. Yes they appeared in a few movies after marriage, but in general they limited their movies after marriage. Now whether that was the husband's decision or their own is not known! But should these actresses give up their career after marriage?

Madhuri, Juhi, Karisma, Raveena, Kajol, Hema ji, Sridevi, Shilpa, & others are just a few of those actresses that we don't see any more. Its all about the new generation actresses like Deepika, Asin, Katrina, Priyanka, Bipasha, Kareena etc etc.

But the truth is that actresses like Madhuri, Juhi, Karisma, Hema ji, Sridevi, Kajol, & Shipla were the golden ladies and will always be remembered in the industry. I don't think any new comer can bring the same impact that these leading ladies once had They are truly missed in the industry.

Should these actresses be allowed to act after marriage? Or has their responsibility shifted to their family and therefore can't act after marriage? If the guys can still act why can't the girls? I mean if acting is their passion then shouldn't they be allowed to do it and balance their life out between their career and family?

PS: On a side note I really miss Rani. I'm so glad to see her back in action, but she needs to do more films!
She doesn't quite fit in the category of "married" but she is also one of those leading ladies that was once at the top of the list. She still is for me, but she needs to return to what she does best, ACTING!

Great topic! I love these food-for-thought topics.

Personally, I think it's a pity that most Indian actresses tend to disappear after marriage. I do feel like it's a personal decision and if they simply want to focus on their family rather than on their career, that should be respected.

What I do have a problem with is people instantly writing off an actress as soon as she is married. It seems like the market value of an actress goes way down once she ties the not. The public seems less receptive to married actresses and even the types of roles they play get restricted to older/more mature roles because they're assumed to have lost their youth appeal. Interestingly, this is not the case for actors at all. I think women are still viewed more as eye-candy in the industry even though no one likes to say it. Once their "sexiness" or "youth appeal" starts to go away, their popularity starts to go down.

There are some exceptions though. I think Aishwarya has broken all odds and managed to still be active in the film industry after marriage. This, of course, might be because she married into a film family. Kajol has also continued doing movies but I definitely see her being typecasted in her roles. It seems like most of her films post-marriage depict her in motherly roles, which is getting a little boring now. I know she can't play a college-student anymore but that doesn't mean she has to play a mother in every film. The rest of the actresses (Karisma, Reveen, Sonali Bendre, Madhuri and plenty others) pretty much disappeared as soon as they got married.

Great topic! Definately they should be able to continue acting after marriage, they are beautiful and talented. Juhi, Kajol, Raveena, still act but Raveena hasn't had much luck at the box office. Kajol still acts but has chosen to limit the amount of films she does. Juhi still acts as well.

Shilpa unfortunately hasn't had much luck with her acting career, even though I think she is a good actress. Loved her in Phir Milenge and I heard she was good in Life in Metro too. It seems Shilpa has more luck outside of films, with her cricket team, perfume.

Madhuri and Karisma, miss them a lot!! Madhuri hasn't been seen since Aaja Nachle and Karisma was last seen in a guest appearance in OSO.

I also miss Preity and Rani, I know Rani has a filmed line up for release next year but still. Not seeing them as often as I used to on the big screen has been disappointing

Some of these ladies like Kajol and Juhi still act after marriage, but they don't play leading ladies like they used to. Kajol still somewhat does lead roles, but they are mature and like somebody said, motherly. Juhi is no longer the same Juhi we knew in the 90s. I still wish she did bubbly and comedic roles, and played the lead heroine again for once. I think it's sad that the careers of these talented ladies gets cut short because of age while the men their age still play college students and do youthful love stories.

By the way, Madhuri made a great comeback with Aaja Nachle! She is the perfect example of looking great for her age and still being able to play a lead heroine. She looked fit and fantastic and danced like a goddess. But because of family duties, Madhuri hasn't been able to act in more films, which is understandable. Now if only there was a way for these ladies to continue their careers but also be there for their families. Hmmm....should they do the Hollywood trend of having 10 different nannies for their kids?? LOL. I don't know.

if they don't disappear making a comeback after 5 yrs then i think the audiences can connect with them really well

kajol and aish are perfect examples who despite of getting married were and are doing films and didn't let go the flow

mads came after spending sometime with family and kids in UD, karishma is still not willing to do films as of now, juhi does mummy roles sometimes, but somewhere the flow got disturbed coz they were out of the public eye for sometime and due to this the attention shifts towards the one who is there at the moment the centre of attraction

kyuki ish industry mein jo dikhta hai wo bikta hai

good topic...!
i think it also has to do with the roles that the industry has to offer for most lead actresses or heroines, to use a better term... most of the roles do not really require much acting prowess... unfortunately, the male actor always have better roles and better characters... it does not make sense for any of the actresses of karishma's, rani's or madhuri's caliber to do any of these eye-candy roles... the few roles that are well written are mostly taken up by those who are in the picture, i.e. they never took a break and continued to act.... i'm including both married and unmarried actresses here... most of the actresses marry in the first place when their acting career is fizzling out, or when they no longer have good roles coming to them...!
so really, a comeback usually does not help in that case... karishma and madhuri both failed to make a great comeback...!! and though, people want to see rani, priety, juhi and other lead actresses of the 90's, to be honest, there is no chance that they can make it again... surely, we might see some of them in motherly roles, or other mature roles... even kajol does mostly motherly roles and mature roles... the only leading actresses who still does a variety of roles despite being married is Ash...!
everyone has their time... and their prime... unfortunately, the era of sonali, karishma, raveena, shilpa, preity etc. is no longer...!

It's really sad that we don't see much of these lead actresses anymore! I personally don't think any of these recent era actresses can match up to the actresses of the 90s! Those actresses had a charm that no other recent actress has right now! Sure Priyanka, Kareena, Katrina, Deepika, Sonam may be good in viewers eyes, but no matter how hard they try they simply can't match up to Madhuri, Kajol, Karisma, Juhi, Sridevi, Shilpa, Rani etc! The actresses of the 90s have created such an effect on our industry!
Sure these actresses still work after marriage! I never mentioned that they aren't seen on movies at all! They are but rarely! Maybe one movie a year! Their responsibilites shift to their family! Or sometimes it's the husbands that refuse them to work! Whatever it is I feel it's wrong for these actresses to leave their career after marriage! Unless it's their personal preference! That's different! But if they love their career and if they can put a balance between their family and career then they have no reason to quit their career!

Yea, some actresses like Aish still work in films after marriage! But look at her family! From what I heard Amit ji didn't like the fact that Jaya ji work in films after marriage, so we seldom saw her on screen after marriage! But I don't think Abhishek has that same mentality as his father! Anyways the less said on Aish, the better! Lol

In conclusion I just want to state actresses shouldn't give up the career they love after marriage! The most important thing is being able to keep a balance between their family and career! And if they can do that then their is no problem! If the guys can still focus on their careers after marriage what is different for the girls? I know responsibilites increase but the main thing goes back to being able to keep a balance!
