Oh You are bengali .. I did not know that .. Suvarnalata is bringing small changes in her family , Jyoti is also doing the same .
Both cases orthodox family .
Both cases the bride's husband has 3 brothers .
The mother in laws both cases are evil . ( In Jyoti Chachi sa is her kind of mother in law)
But there are differences also .. But in basic premise there is similarity
Suvarnalata's family is middle class, not royal like here.... and the issues are different, more realistic, nothing as dramatic as an illegitimate child.... I too feel that Suvarnalata started off like Balika Vadhu, the difference being Suvarna is a fighter, unlike Anandi who cries most of the time. Anyway the difference with Jyoti is stark.... Jyoti is an educated modern woman whose husband gives her every freedom, she can leave when she wants, she is staying because she herself wants to change things. Suvarnalata is stuck in an unhappy, abusive marriage that she cannot leave (early 20th century!) and is trying to survive, she has only two choices, to be submissive or to fight. Either way, she is unlikely to find happiness, but the second will let her keep her self respect and maybe imbibe some of her spirit in her children. Jyoti has a simple third choice.... she can just leave and be happy.
Sorry, didn't mean to write an essay, but Suvarnalata is a favourite book, so got carried away.
