A forgotten b'day

Last week was Kkusum's fourth anniversary. Though Balaji and Sony forgot all about it, the stars of the show were nostalgic. Neha Mathur goes down the memory lane with them

It's raining anniversaries on the house of Balaji. While the production house celebrated Kyunki's stupendously successful thousand episodes recently, last week was Kkusum's fourth anniversary.

But surprisingly, neither Kapoor nor Sony remembered the 'historic' date. "It was through a fan that we came to know of Kkusum's anniversary," says one of Kkusum's lead actors, adding, "Everyone in Sony is busy promoting Jassi Jaisi.... No one has the time for Kkusum."

But the occasion was a trip down the memory lane for some in the Kkusum team. Says its leading man Anuj Saxena, who plays Abhay Kapoor: "I am one of the oldest characters of the show. I've survived for four years now."

Through the years, viewers have watched with bated breath as Abhay married four times and Nausheen Ali Sardar walked out of the show. Says Sardar: "People still address me as Kusum."

Despite the generational leap and Sardar's replacement (another replacement is in the offing with Shilpa Saklani having jumped on to the Kkusum fray), the soap always kept its focus on the Abhay-Kusum relationship. It also tried out the suspense technique, although most would say unsuccessfully so. Big names like Narayani Shastri, Shweta Kwatra and Moulie Ganguly joined the show, but walked out eventually.

Aakashdeep Saigal, who once created waves as Ansh of Kyunki Saas..., failed to create the same magic on Kkusum. However, the baap-beti jodi of Abhay and Kumud remains a huge hit. "I have now started calling Aashka (Kumud) my daughter. It's like a family," laughs out Saxena. That's not unexpected, coming from an actor who says he "can't go beyond Abhay Kapoor now!"

The switchover show

All TV stars didn't grow up with stars in their eyes. Amar Upadhyay wanted to be an astronomer and Hiten Tejwani a CA. NEHA MATHUR reports on the stars' childhood ambitions

If wishes were horses, beggars would fly. Or so believe a galaxy of TV stars, who didn't exactly grow up star-struck, but with other professional ambitions.

The man whose 'death' caused a mass hysteria, Amar 'Mihir' Upadhyay, actually wanted to study the stars! "As a child, I was forever at the Mumbai Planetarium. I was very confident of being an astronomer," he reveals.

Jaswir Kaur, the pretty architect of K Street... , never even dreamt that she would reside in the posh address. "I had a very nice, soothing voice when I was young and wanted to be a singer," she says. An ardent fan of sad songs, Kaur grew up singing Ram Lakhan's bada dukh dina.

But as fate would have it, Upadhyay failed to find a good college to study astronomy and Kaur lost her melodious voice after her tonsil operation. "There was no college that could offer a course in astronomy. I would have had to go abroad to study it, which would have been very expensive," says Upadhyay.

However, Rohit Roy, Karan of Sarkar, made less of a switch in terms of his dreams, as he always wanted to be a model. "I wanted to take up modelling assignments," he says. An MBA by qualification, Roy feels that he's "an actor by accident."

He adds: "I was studying MBA when I thought of trying my hands at modelling. And from there started my journey."

Hiten Tejwani, Karan of Kyunki Saas...., was studying Charted Accountancy, and took up modelling just for "time pass." He now jokes, "I was not able to cope up with my studies. Algebra was a bit too much for me!"

Chips in Anuj Saxena, Abhay of Kkusum. "I am a qualified doctor. I wanted to go abroad but stayed back to be a part of the pharma industry." That was before he struck gold as an actor.

However, the stars do not feel any remorse for their professional dreams having gone sour. Confesses Tejwani: "I am happy to be an actor. Had I not been an actor, I wouldn't have got all the recognition." Roy, too, believes the same. "The amount of adulation and money I have got here, I wouldn't have got anywhere else." Kaur, on her part, finds acting on television the best way to exhibit her talent.

However, Upadhyay still wants to pursue his dreams. He says: "I can't take up astronomy as a subject now. But I just might go abroad and study it for sometime to fulfil my dream."

yeah but i don't think it's fair that jjkn gets more attention

even india-forums gives more attention to jassi cuz there are 2 forums for the show

an update one and a general discussion one

it's not fair cuz jjkn has the highest ratings on sony

and the other shows aren't that high

the weekend shows maybe but the daily shows not really

ayushmaan ended cuz of low ratings

and then kkusum and ymlh are kinda low

i think sony should try and focus on all it's shows

especially the daily ones
