Facebook...dangerous?

Hi guys,

It needs more security definitely personally I don't have Facebook but yes it has been in the headlines a lot and they need to something fast so that Facebook is safer to use

Everything on the internet is dangerous, even IF is dangerous. Please be careful when logging on to the internet and be careful who you interact with. muwhahahaah

I don't think Facebook should be banned just because some people make bad judgments or don't use caution on a social networking site just because its online - its still RL. I like facebook. I'm not addicted or on facebook all day and all night, but I definitely do use facebook to keep in touch with a lot of people all over the world. Childhood friends, high school friends, and now friends I went to college with who've moved on to grad school. In fact, facebook helped me regain touch with SO many childhood friends that I probably would never have met or talked to again if it weren't for facebook.

Facebook has enough protection on it. Make your profile totally private - heck, make yourself unsearchable if you want. I think people who leave their FB profiles open to public are looking for trouble. What is the point of showcasing your personal photos to the whole world? Arrogant, much? And if you have a private profile, make sure you only add people you KNOW and that too in real life. Not someone you met online, or someone you think you know, or anything of the sort. People who you personally know. Also, its not always necessary that everyone you know should be on facebook. For example, people like employers are probably better kept away from your personal life.

As far as vulnerable groups go, its the parents that should be keeping an eye on what their children are doing online. I say facebook shouldn't be allowed until kids are in high school. Way too much drama for kids younger than that. And as parents, it is their job to keep track of things their kids do online. Its when parents fail to do their job that youngsters become vulnerable and involved in such chaos.

Point 1- I agree with u that on a basic level Facebook is nothing but a social network site which helps people to be in contact with ur relatives and friends. U need not go and make a call or write a email - u can just leave a short message. It is as simple as that.

Point 2- I think the first thing any user ( an adult or a kid in teen) who had made a new account be taken towards the privacy settings or security settings to help them in being careful and understand the network site.

Point3- Absolutely true- members are responsible for their own accounts, why add unknown people just for the heck of having abv 1000 friends. Instead go out and make real friends.

Point 4- Anything which gets too much of publicity or hype by the media means it id out of control. Few months back , i read an article in the Wall street journal - two guys for a certain university did a project on FB , they need not add people as friends but by the amount which can be seen on their profle and the people they talk to - those two students were able to tell the SSN last four digits of more than 20000 people.

In the internet marketing business of USA -" if u r doing anything online then consider u r doing it in public"
There is zero privacy with ur phone nos, emails credit cards etc
every data is sold, shared by the companies to their subsidaries or other companies.
Facebook is linked with each n every damn company - like for any company advertisement we see their is a line saying connect thru face book.
I think we all should go and read the terms n conditions (which 99% of the people blindly accept) i am sure their in the privacy policy they can sell or share the people information.
Now its upto u guys to decide if FAcebook is safe or not.

Should we ban driving because some 'text while u drive' kind of idiot has killed some innocent people by driving recklessly or should that irresponsible idiot be thrown in jail to rot..........same is the case with FB or internet in general............if some people are not careful enough that doesn't mean that everyone should suffer for that..........I have seen people with 800-900 friends..........when u have that many people whom u don't know well in ur friends list and u are pouring ur heart out on FB...giving each minute detail of ur life..like what u ate for breakfast...when u went to potty....and how u will be away from ur house for a week because u are going on a cruise.........the unpleasant things are bound to happen.................
People need to use their common sense which sadly is not so common these days............FB has a lot of privacy options...use them to ur advantage.....don't give out ur vacation plans on the FB ........if u have to tell ur family and close friends.......we have something called the phone.....
and lastly people who are not careful will not be careful anywhere....whether its the Real world or virtual world............there are 1001 ways to get urself killed and internet is the least dangerous of them all if one just uses their brain.....
