Married? 😲 Prem and Heer aren't or were ever married in this fic 😆

This is a more modern spin on relationships.

Thanks for commenting! And I've added you to the PM list.

Thank you to those of you interested in this shot 😊

Just to clear up any possible misunderstandings. The Prem and Heer I have written have no ties with their Kis Desh characters and circumstances. I may be using familiar Kis Desh character names but most everyone has a new avatar...hehe...sorry if I confused anyone by my writing 😕

Anyways this current writing is more of modern take on relationships. I don't know why but when I was writing Part 2 I kept imagining the neurotic characters that Katherine Heigl tends to play in her romantic comedies (27 Dress - loved this movie! The Ugly Truth - word of warning for this movie which completely caught me off by surprise...a lot of very mature stuff in this movie not something to watch with parents) and envisioned that for Heer. Don't know how while I'm doing with this shot 😭 Anyways comments greatly welcomed! 😃

Part 2: Rescue

Heer stared at her computer screen completely at a loss. She had hit writer's block for the third time that day. She had a 5:30 deadline and it was already 2:00 in the afternoon. She collapsed on her arms in front of the square screen and sighed. Just then three heads popped up like a toy jack-in-the-box and craned their necks over into her cubical. "Psst! Heer?" one of her co-workers whispered. "You okay?"

She lazily raised her head up, "Do I look like I'm okay, Veera?"

"You still have writer's block?" Veera asked.

"It doesn't have anything to do with...you know who?" Ashlesha asked.

"Which you know who?" Sanjana inquired.

Heer glanced around her co-workers and sighed. They were a tight group of work friends that hung out even after work. They told each other everything that was going on in their lives from relationship problems to family problems. "No, I'm not thinking about him," she curtly replied.

"I think that says it all right there," Veera said. "Girl, he's not worth your time."

"You don't think I know that. It's been four years and then BAM one night he shows up...and I haven't seen him or talked to him since...and..." shaking her head, "...no...I can't talk about this. If I talk about this then it's like I'm making him more than he is."

"That's the way to treat this," Ashlesha encouraged.

"So onto a happier topic...have you decided if you are going to move in with Raj?" Sanjana asked. "I think he's been more than generous with the time. It's been a month."

"What are you waiting for? Move your butt in with him," Veera advised. "You guys are practically heading down the aisle anyway...I mean around the fire."

"You know she still has commitment phobia. Let her take her time," Ashlesha said.

Heer stood up having enough of the gossip talk surrounding her love life. "I'm going to get coffee. Do you guys want any?"

The girls shook their heads. "Don't drink too much or you're going to be wired by the end of the day. You've already had two cups." Ashlesha warned.

"I know...I know. I'll be back in fifteen. If the boss comes looking for me...you guys know what to do," Heer said and quickly left the office.

Heer waited patiently in line for her turn at the corner Starbucks. "Venti frap, 2 percent, double shot, and no whip," she ordered. The cashier nodded and repeated the order for her before asking for her name. "Heer," she replied. "Spelled H E E R." She reached in her pocket to pull out some cash when realized that she had forgotten to grab the ten dollars from her purse before she made the trip down. She looked at the cashier with extreme embarrassment, "I'm so sorry. I forgot my money...my office is just down the street. Could you guys hold that order for me while I go get the cash?"

The cashier frowned and curtly said, "Next time remember to bring your money. I can't hold any orders. Next!"

"You didn't have to be rude to her. I'll take the order and can you add a grande espresso macchiato with 2 percent," announced a masculine voice from behind. A hand reached over Heer's shoulder holding a twenty dollar bill out for the cashier to take. Heer glanced behind her and was stunned to see Prem there in a black tailored jacket, a white shirt, jeans, and black boots. He gave her a half smile as they moved over to the pickup line.

"You didn't have to do that," she replied.

"But I did. Venti size, huh? Must be one heck of a writer's block you have. Where are you working?" Prem said trying to make idle chit chat.

Heer shook her head, "You know what I don't have to deal with this," she said and walked out of the line.

Prem grabbed their drinks just as they announced their order and chased after Heer as the glass doors swung shut. "Heer," he called after her as he ran down the sidewalk. "At least take the coffee. They just made it." Prem smiled as she stopped in her tracks and turned around.

"Fine," she replied holding her hand out.

"First tell me where you work," he replied.

Heer narrowed her eyes. She couldn't believe he was really seriously doing this. "You can keep it if you---" she began but wasn't allowed to finish when Prem cut in, "You owe me 7 dollars. I just want to make sure you don't skip out on me."

Heer was left slightly speechless. "Ah...I-I-I work at The Chronicle...the local news and politics section."

Prem gave a half nod, "Impressive," and then handled the frappuccino over.

"Thanks," Heer simply stated and then turned around to walk away from him. Seeing him like this all of the sudden was making her insides squirm. It was bad enough she had run into him at Rue55 on her date but now he knew where she worked. She stepped off the curb and looked up in time to see a taxi cab barreling down the street. She heard her name being called and the next thing she knew she was yanked forcefully back onto the sidewalk. As her senses came back into focus she realized Prem was holding her arm tightly with an extremely worried expression on his face. His eyes were searching hers seeing if she was all right. Heer pulled away from him needing room to breathe from the near death experience but mostly from his eyes. He always had a way of making her feel as if he was reaching down into her soul and reading her thoughts. It was unnervingly beautiful when they were dating now it made her twist uncomfortably.

"You should be more careful," Prem instructed.

Heer tried composing herself and motioned with her hand, "The building is just over this street. I'll get you the cash." She glanced down on the sidewalk and saw the wet stains of an over turned coffee cup. "I owe you a coffee," she replied.

"I'm just glad your okay," he answered. "The coffee is of little importance."

Heer felt her insides jerk at his words of concern. "Please don't start. I'm barely able to have a civil conversation with you. I meant what I said that night. The past is in the past. You should go on continue living your life and I'll just go on continue living my life."

"You never finish listening before you start making up your own conclusions about things," Prem answered. "I never wanted to hurt you. It was never suppose to---"

"Stop, just stop," Heer said cutting in holding up her hand. "I don't want to hear any more excuses."

Prem bit his lower lip in frustration, "Heer," he said forcefully grabbing her arm. "Let me finished. Gosh, this childish behavior of yours drives me crazy."

Heer stared back at Prem recalling the memory of how they ended their relationship. He had called her childish then and other scathing comments like all she cared about was what she was going to wear that day and who was going to be the next American Idol. She was young she admitted and perhaps didn't have her life and career planned out like he had but she wasn't entirely clueless she had some goals. How she planned to get there was still a work in progress but she figured she had all of college to figure that out. They had been fighting a lot recently; he had been completely stressed at work and simply unloaded all his frustrations on her over a simple request she had made to go out and see a movie. He told her she was just too young and immature to understand the real world and the stresses he had to deal with and he'd be better off with someone his own age. "Let go of me," Heer coldly spoke. Prem realized he had touched a nerve with something he had said. The anger in her eyes told him all he needed to know and he slowly let go of her arm.

Their conversation was interrupted as Heer heard Sanjana shouting her name from across the street. Heer turned and felt completely relieved that her friend had shown up. "The boss lady is on the prowl better get upstairs," Sanjana informed once she was on their side of the street.

"Okay," Heer replied and then whispered, "Give me ten bucks."

Sanjana looked at her friend wondering why she was asking for money but obediently gave her the cash. Heer slapped the money in Prem's hand and then walked away leaving Sanjana to chase after her. "Who's the cute guy?" she probed as they crossed the street.

"He's my ex," Heer simply stated.

*****************************************************

Deciding to take the scenic route home after a hard day at the office, Heer drove through the lake side neighborhood enjoying the beautiful lake houses and the reflection of the setting sun on the water. Her car wind and bent along the curvy and hilly road with ease despite its old age. She loved her car and refused to sell it or trade it in for a newer model. So what if it was now ten years old and was beginning to show signs of its age. The splotches of peeled blue paint around its body didn't make Bessie, as Heer nicked named it drive any worse. She was content to keep driving it until it died on her. Raj and all her other friends tried tempting her with flashy new models of other vehicles available in the market but Heer wouldn't budge. She felt in some way obligated to the car; it was after all the first car she ever paid for with her own money. She had instantly taken a liking to it when she first saw it at the used car lot and within a few short hours of hard bargaining with the dealer she drove off the lot a proud owner of a 2000 model Ford Taurus.

Heer gently rolled to a stop in front of the red light and waited patiently for it to turn green. Seeing Prem again so unexpectedly at Starbucks had put her in a foul mood for the rest of the day but she somehow managed to submit her column on time. It was one of her starkest and sarcastic writings ever on the local politic scene between the Democrats and Republicans mid-term elections. Her boss loved it and in some way Heer thought she had Prem to thank for her bitter cynicism. She glanced over to her right and noticed a couple riding their bikes along the pathway beside the lake. They were playfully riding around each other until the girl lost balance and fall over. She had scrapped her knee rather badly Heer noted from the way she fall over. The boy immediately hopped off his bike and went down on his knees. He crouched on the ground tenderly blowing on her scrapped knee cap. Heer couldn't help but chuckle at the pair as it suddenly brought back the memory of her first date with Prem. The exact same thing had happened to her. She remembered the panicked look on Prem's face at seeing her knee bleeding so much. He had piggy-backed her all the way to a neighboring house to get first aid. The date ended at the emergency room because she had gashed her knee so badly on the gravel that she needed stitches. Prem felt horrible about it and bought her some ice cream in an attempt to apologize for the disastrous first date. She laughed the incident off and took the initiative to ask him out on a second date.

Heer returned her attention back on the stoplight just in time to see it turn green. She drove a few more feet until her car suddenly stalled in the middle of the road. Heer didn't know what to do next but to turn on her hazard lights and try restarting the car again. She heard the engine trying to rev up but then just stalled as a sudden cloud of white smoke came bellowing out underneath the hood of her car. She sighed, "Bessie don't do this to me now." She checked the clock on her dash and realized it was already 8pm. The sun would finish setting soon and she would probably have a few more minutes of daylight before it turned dark. That was at least one good thing about the summers; late sun sets. Heer pulled out her cell phone and to her utter amazement the battery was dead. "Great, I'm stranded here," she muttered as she carefully got out of the car. She popped the hood and stared at the mechanical parts just so she had something to do. She knew nothing about engines or the parts that made cars run. She knew she would have to move the car off to the side of the road soon before her car became a traffic issue. Heer decided the next best thing to do was to go to one of the neighboring houses to ask for some assistance. She grabbed her things from the car and just as she was about to close the door it suddenly started to rain. Heer sighed and looked up at the sky in frustration, "Really? Really? Are you really doing this to me now?" She stood here for a few minutes in the pouring rain thinking to herself could her day get any worse. So consumed in her own thoughts she failed to realize someone was holding an umbrella above her head. Heer turned around and was immediately greeted with two chocolate brown eyes. She swallowed hard and glanced around her wondering where did he come from? Prem stood holding the red umbrella above their heads as the rain continued to fall down. "Are you stalking me?" Heer finally said.

"No, I live around here now. I moved in about a month ago," Prem said and then offered his umbrella to her. Heer glanced at the handle but refused to take it and walked back out in the rain. Prem sighed at her stubbornness and closed the umbrella, "Fine we'll both get wet then." Heer stared at him confused why he was going to stand out in the rain with her. "What's wrong with your car?" Prem motioned.

"I don't know it just stopped," Heer replied.

Prem walked over and inspected the engine. "Looks like the carburetor is shot."

"Really?" Heer asked not sure what he was talking about. "Oh no poor, Bessie."

"Bessie?" he repeated arching his eyebrow. "You named your car Bessie?"

"What's wrong with Bessie?" Heer replied.

"It's like a name for the farm cow," Prem said. "Did you get the car from *Mr. McDonald?"

(*hint reference to the nursery school rhyme Old McDonald Had a Farm)

Heer rolled his eyes at his joke. "No, I did not. Anyways how much is this car-board? Carbutor? ...whatever it is called going to cost me?"

Prem shook his head laughing, "Carburetor. Tell you the truth I don't know. I really have no idea what's wrong. I just thought I say that cause they always say that in the movies." Heer crossed her arms not amused that he was joking. "But I do know a mechanic and he can check it out for you. Let me call the tow guy."

Heer turned to her car and frowned sadly, "I hope he can fix Bessie."

Prem looked at the old car and chuckled, "You really want to save that decrepit old thing? Let it go and get a new car." Heer turned around and gave him a nasty look. Prem held up his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay I'm calling the tow guy. Calm down."
