One big problem would be "how will the occupants keep themselves occupied in free time". Theoretically they should be able to access internet abroad the ship, after all the ship will travel a lot slower than the speed of light. So a communication channel will continue to exist with the ship from earth.

It will be damn slow . Light from sun takes 8 mins 18 secs to reach earth at the speed of light. this ship is supposedly meant for inter galactic travel , so it will be many times more than this distance. Leave alone internet connection with earth , any communication from earth to to the ship may be horribly slow. It may take "hello" from ship to reach earth days/years depending on the distance that it has traversed from the earth. When you are on such a ship you have to create a virtual world for the inhabitants of the ship. There will be no more night or day on thip. You will definitely need good psychotherapist on the ship so that the inhabitants do not turn insane!!

Good points raised ! As CO HR during the recruitment drive I ll keep in mind to disqualify ppl who get bored easily 😆

But by the time we are able to build such ships (in few hundred years?), we would have pretty sophisticated communication technology so transfer of huge amounts of data will be possible across vast distances. In that case the generation ship will have an inhouse server which will have a copy of the entire internet while leaving, and the ship will keep syncing with the servers on earth few times a day during its journey.

Assuming that we will improve upon greatly on how much data will be sent in one chunk , data will never travel faster than light, which is the speed in case of communication even now.

If our future space ship has reached the distance of our nearest star proxima centauri, each packet of data will take 4.22 years to travel one way . so , one hello acknowledgment will take 2x4.22 years.

Entire internet is a network of computers , the state changing each moment, so i do not think it will ever be possible to dump the whole internet even on earth anytime in future.

I think , the name generation ship is because the original passangers will naturally die on travel, whose children will take over the ship generation after generation, thats how they will be able to do iner stellar travel. In that case the next generation , and next will no longer be interested in anything happening here on a distant earth anymore !!
