The Union Cabinet of India has cleared a 300% salary hike for MPs that will take their salaries from Rs 16,000 to Rs 50, 000 pm. But some MPs say this is not enough.

Agree or disagree ?
Their daily allowance of Rs 1000 when parliament is in session ,has been doubled.
Their monthly constituency allowance too has been doubled from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000
For office expenses they will now get Rs 40, 000 (doubled)
Conveyance allowance gone up from 1 lakh to 4 lakh rupees.
There are other perks like free train and air travel, expenses for secretary/PA, computer operator, laundry, telp, AC allowances etc
However, even after a three-fold pay hike, Indian MPs still rank much below their fellow parliamentarians in major countries in terms of their monthly salaries.

Will a hike in the MPs salary help to reduce corruption?

I'm not sure what the cost of living in India is now, but 300%. Jeez thats way too much. Especially with that many perks, you don't need that much of a salary. Usually salary hikes are 5%, 15-20% is understandable in certain circumstances. But 300%? No way Jose! That means they are living in the hole now.

I don't think it will reduce corruption either. Greed has no cure.

it's weird that these mp's who are sitting on lakhs will need a bigger salary.

16000 otherwise you can't live on... 50 k is more than enough..

A moronic article written by some moorkhnath

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/After-hike-Indian-MP-gets-13-times-less-pay-than-US-lawmaker/articleshow/6382006.cms
NEW DELHI: Even after a three-fold pay hike, Indian MPs still rank much below their fellow parliamentarians in major countries in terms of their monthly salaries.

With the Cabinet today giving its nod to the MPs' pay rise besides doubling several other emoluments, the basic monthly salary of Indian lawmakers has now gone up to Rs 50,000 from Rs 16,000.

However, the new salary component, excluding perks and other allowances, is not on a par with the monthly emoluments their counterparts in other major economies are drawing at present.

For example, the current salary for all Senators and Members of the House of Representatives in the US is USD 174,000 per annum, or USD 14,500 per month. If converted into Indian currency, the monthly salary of a US lawmaker becomes Rs 675,203, which is more than 13 times the new salary of an Indian MP.

When compared with the monthly pay of a Canadian MP, the new salary of Indian MPs is almost 11 times lower, while it is eight times lower than that of British lawmakers.

A member of Canada's House of Commons is currently drawing USD 12,611 as salary per month while it is 5,478 pounds or Rs 399,941 for a British parliamentarian.

According to the Australian government's website, the base salary of a MP in that country is about USD 118,000 per annum or USD 9,833 per month.

Similarly, a member of Japanese Parliament (Diet) gets about 1.3 million yen, or USD 15,200, every month. The net monthly pay of a MP in Singapore is 13,710 Singapore dollars, or Rs 471,364.

The monthly salaries of lawmakers in France, Italy, Germany and Spain are EUR 7,002, EUR 5,487, EUR 7,688 and EUR 3,126 respectively.
Erm I converted it and at INR 50,000 per month the MPs will be making about $13,000 USD a year. Starting wages for a Wal-Mart cashier. At INR 16,000 per month they are below US poverty line and making as much as illegal immigrants cleaning toilets. 🤔

Makes me wonder WTH is cost of living in India nowadays?

It's well known that basic salary is only a small part of the overall compensation given to an MP. Hence we did some calculations to get a rough estimate of the overall cost of an MP to his or her country by finding out the approximate monetary values of various perks and allowances. Converting this into international dollars in terms of purchasing power parity (the same benchmark that makes India the world's fourth largest economy), it works out that Indian MPs cost more to the country than their counterparts in Singapore, Japan and Italy — nations globally known for their highly paid politicians.

Without including accommodation, travel, medical facilities and water charges, and taking 151 Parliament session days (from June 1, 2009 to June 1, 2010) as the annual average, it works out that the new salaries and allowances (constituency allowance, office, telephone, internet, furniture, electricity, daily allowances) given to an MP is worth more than Rs 20 lakh annually.

There's another way of looking at the pay packets of our MPs — by comparing it with the people they claim to represent. India's per capita GDP being $ 3,176 (PPP), it works out that after the hikes our MPs will cost the country 68 times more than what an average Indian earns annually. That makes the disparity in India between the citizen's average income and an MP's cost to country, among the highest in the world.

If this ? 50,000 is implemented then the gross salary will be around ~ ? 1,50,000. I can't see how we can compare our MPs salaries with MPs in developed nations.

Well, agreed that those who are corrupt will remain so. But another POV could be that with an increase in pay hike it may entice educated and motivated ppl into politics ie ppl who do not have huge assets like many of the present politicians nor the will to amass assets through unfair means . At present its impractical to expect a political career to run on altruism alone .The salay ought to sufficient to make a decent living without having to succumb to temptations . The pension too has been hiked to Rs 20, 000 pm . But thats less than what most well qualified professionals would be earning .
