I don't think you should remake Hollywood classics I feel it ruins the original film. Watching Partner was hilarious but it was exactly like watching Hitch but Bollywood actors/actresses in the film

Imtiaz ali is the original director I like because he's movies are his own and not a copy. One hollywood director made a copy of JWM but atleast they put a claimer on the bottom saying it's inspired by JWM. Also some director is trying to buy the rights of LAK so they can remake it. So congrats to Imtiaz for being original

But just like desigal said, I like the fact that We are family bought the copyrights. Some of the directors just rip of the movie story and act like that's their own original story.

Do you know the name of the movie which was inspired by JWM?

I brought up Peepli Live because it talks about Indian issues in uniquely Indian ways, such as the song 'sakhi saiyyan toh khub hi kamaat hai'.
I would make a distinction between 'adaptation' and 'copying', in that in the former you are acknowledging the original amd taking it forward, engaging with it. Hence I would say that Maqbool and Omkara are among original Bollywood movies, though they are both adaptations of Shakespeare.
I too agree that people copy as the easy way out, but i would also like to point to money and success as important factors in the decision to copy.
If you are not a star son, you do not get chances over and over again to make a film - you have to prove your credentials. If your first film is a flop, it is extremely unlikely that you will get a second or third chance to prove that you are a good director, unless some producer has faith in you. In such a scenario, no one wants to take a risk. Copying something which is already successful derives from the logic 'if it has worked once, it will work again' 'it has already proved that people like such an idea'. Its a sad state of affairs but in a success driven industry, would you blame people for choosing what they see as the safer route?

Woah tht's like one endless list! I got tired actually reading it lol.

Totally agree with you. You know what i should be really excited for we are a family cuz all my fav, arjun, kareena, kajol & even that little girl who plays the youngest daughter are in the movie & YET im not excited for this movie. The thing is that i don't like to watch the same thing, same idea over & over again, i am that type of person. I am the type of person who would love a movie cuz of its original, innovative idea & execution & be like WOW, that's one great movie! And there have been MANY remakes of stepmom movie...there was a bengali drama that was a remake of it few years ago & now We are a Family. Now if i watch the original one, the 2nd remake & the 3rd remake..seriously what is there interesting for me to watch then? Let's rock song?

I think the reason bollywood makes so many remakes of hollywood is cuz most people in India don't OR didn't most probably watch hollywood movies. So bollywood makers have this mind, THEY will think its original & will love the movie anyway...& their business will be well so why worry. Are they scared to move forward with original ideas? Who knows...business there matters the most i guess. Aamir's productions have really original movies...TZP, jaane tu & now peepli live. Jab we met was another awesome original. A wednesday as well.

And as you see many of the remakes bollywood made are also pretty major hits. Not ALL original ideas work...for example, ram gopal verma's movies. They have to open their mind & think like a viewer & then makes movies with original concept, otherwise don't make them. And i agree with you from books it's really not a rip-off..since a film can only be BASED on a book...the execution, imagination is originally the director's, if they add extra nice stuff to it. Like 3 idiotsm a nice example, Harry Potter, a nice example. And a bad example is twilight series movies...totally ruins the essence of the books according to me. So all in all, really depends on the director & scriptwriter of the movie.

Why only movies, look at music too. Pritam has an ENDLESS list of stolen songs. Yet, his music is one of the most popular in India, its stolen but it sells. I think only people on internet knows how many songs of pritam have been copied & from which songs...but common ppl in India don't. It's very unfair but life's unfair like that. Sadly, the biggest factor bollywood looks at is money.

Oh don't even get me started on Pritam. I love "his" songs because they're so catchy but then again, they're not really his songs in the first place. I mean, what exactly are we supposed to applaud? The amazing ease he seems to rip off his music with?

I agree that movies are a business and at the end of the day, making money is what matters. But doesn't it seem that the original movies seem to be appreciated the most by the audience? Be it Taare Zameen Par or Munnabhai or even classics like DDLJ that work simply because of the original treatment of the film even if the story wasn't exactly groundbreaking? Sure ripoffs like Partner (*groan*) and Murder and countless others work but there is a reason Aamir Khan movies carry more weight than a David Dhawan movie. Perhaps moviegoers aren't as dumb as filmmakers think they are and they actually WANT to see fresh, new, original cinema.

all movie industries lift off others, most of the movies listed in the list on the front page flopped. Like so, hollywood too lifts from not only indian cinema, but Asian cinema, European cinema etc, the fundamental difference is though is that crappy projects wont get funded in Hollywood, or wont get exposure thus nobody hears about it. In bollywood a lot of half-baked plots and stories get money poured into it by ropeing in the right stars and using the right production houses and it becomes a much bigger deal than a small remake that hollywood produced, which would have come out and dissapeared without anybody even taking note of it. Though i'd put that point out there. Also i think our industry is biased through Western influence and is far more insecure of its capabilities so often lazily relies on plots that were globally accepted (ie- hollywood movies). We should stop trying to cater to an audience that requires hollywood remakes with bollywood counterparts, and stick to our own classic stories and film-making style.
