Hey what is your view of chewing paan.
Dangerous ?
Betel leaves are supposed to cleanse your blood.
But betel nut could be addictive as it is considered a mild form of nicotine.
I think eating a bit is good for the body.😊
Quote:
alkaloid stimulant present in the betel nut, the seed of the Betel palm (Areca catechu)
the nut is chewed in numerous Asian countries by hundreds of millions of people as a pick-me-up
    • chewing the nuts results in a wonderful red-brown discolouration of the mouth, staining of the teeth, oral lesions, and potentially oral cancers (Google image the rest of these yourself, I'm getting too grossed out)
thought to be responsible for addiction to chewing the nuts (haha nut chewing) due to its nicotine-like effects on the brain
    • nicotine being the addictive substance in tobacco
  • no medical use (haha nut chewing) although it has been shown to improve memory and other mental functions

Medicinal uses:
Betel leaves are stimulants, digestives, carminative, anti-flatulent, anti-inflammatory, anti phlegmatic and an excellent pain reliever. It is also one of the highest sources of absorbable calcium.

In Ayurvedic medicine, they are used as an aphrodisiac. This is why a betel leaf is never used for a Shiva Pooja since Lord Shiva is a supreme yogi.

In Malaysia, they are used to treat headaches, and joint pain.

In Thailand and China, the leaves are used to relieve toothache.

In Indonesia, they are drunk as an infusion and used as an antibiotic.

They are also used in an infusion to cure indigestion, as a topical cure for constipation, as a decongestant and as an aid to lactation.

Powder of betel nut is used as a constituent in some tooth powders. Other medicinal uses include the removal of tapeworms and other intestinal parasites by swallowing a few teaspoons of powdered betel nut, or by taking tablets containing the extracted alkaloids.

People who chew paan have teeth that used to scare me when I was little. Isn't paan a kind of carcinogen?

The dark red colour comes from catechu (kattha in Hindi).

Betel leaves are harmless. Most pans like mitha paan and the wedding paans are harmless. Betel nut also in moderate proportions is alright. The harmful paan is usually when people add chewing tobacco and gutkha in the roll. Tobacco/gutkha or poor oral hygiene leads to bad teeth due to paan. Proper rinsing and brushing, avoiding the hard stuff leaves paan harmless. Of course the ones with catechu give you red mouth that looks ridiculous, and I don't know why most people don't bother rinsing right away.

As for the spitting - as I mentioned in another topic. Shoot em disgusting unhygienic people.

I like to have a meetha paan once in a while, especially after a feast or a great meal. It completes it.

When I was a student, I used to chew one before going home just to mask the smell of the booze.

I think the tambaku ones (or even the gutka ones) are dangerous, not the saada/masala/meetha variety.
