MUMBAI: Dance choreography is fast becoming an attractive and lucrative career option, one that many students are turning to. "Today, the dance industry is open to fresh talent. One's option are no longer limited to Bollywood. We have reality shows on television, and there's a great demand for choreographers for wedding performances, theatre shows, and even college festivals,'' said choreographer Sandip Soparrkar.

It's little wonder, then, that dance academies are seeing brisk business. "There's a very positive shift taking place in society and people now treat dance not just as a source of entertainment but also as a serious career. A couple of years ago, few people aimed to become a dance choreographer. Today, it is one of the most popular career choices among the youth,'' said Terence Lewis, who owns and runs the Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company in the city.

With very few acknowledged dance institutes in the city, one of the major drawbacks for budding choreographers is the lack of a structured course. Soparrkar, however, remains positive. "A career in dance is like a career in any other field. One has to be prepared and focussed from an early age in order to become a professional dancer or choreographer. It also takes years of practice to hone your skills,'' he said.

The duration of dance courses can range from three months to as long as three years. Most aspirants are able to juggle their academic coursework with the dance classes, but mastering any type dance form takes many years. "Dance is not something that can be taught. If the candidate has it in him/her to make it in the industry, training and practice is all that is needed. But the training period should last at least seven to eight years before the candidate is considered for a job at a professional level,'' said Soparrkar.

Professional advise students to gain a proper understanding of a Western and Indian dance form. "Anybody who comes from a famous dance institute has a better chance of getting hired for a dance,'' added Soparrkar.
Lewis, a graduate in Hotel Management, took up dance as a career only after he graduated from a dance institute in the US. "I learned the importance of theoretical as well as practical dance at the institute and it changed my perspective totally. There are some institutes in the city that do give importance to all aspects of dance,'' said Lewis.
