How you spell money for reality shows

Mahesh Peri | February 24, 2006 15:56 IST

On an average, a popular reality television show gets about 7 million cell phone text messages each episode.

At Rs 4 per SMS, that adds up to Rs 28 million per episode.

Over a year (52 weeks), that is an astounding R 1,460 million.

On a 50:50 split between the channel and the mobile operator, that works out to Rs 730 million to the channel.

All that money from just one reality show.

To get the SMSs in, they will motivate, inspire, incite, instigate and also lure you.

The public are the ones who are sending the sms and they are the ones who are complaining about how much money is being made by the mobile & channel operator.

Simple solution.
They have made enough from C2005.
So tell the public to stop voting by sms on their mobiles. When they do that lets see what they will do next. Are they going to get a panel of renowed judges to judge the shows instead.

Main to sachi dua karta hoon ke yeh reality show waalon ko loss ho aor yeh voting hamesha ke lie band ho jaaye... I fed up with this voting system. It is not good for India where people vote on region based. See 83% people from north voted for Vinit, it is rediculous.

You know you are really funny sometimes, but I am agreeing with your DUA but nothing will change I promise you on this run they will even make more money then the last time please do not ask me how they have the mechanism and all those big fat 🐷are there to dig for more, Saddest thing is they all are carrying that same digging tools (Shovel) that you have in your picture to bury the culture and class of rich history you know where. Sorry to say they are destroying it totally.

Now in II2 you can vote, through SMS, for the songs you want the contestants to sing. Even in Great Indian Laughter Challenge 2, you can vote to save your favourite contestant. All the more money to these channels 😡

Ok, even if we accept the fact that Voting by phone is a part of it. Then I have a few suggestions which are followed by American Idol and most of the western shows -

1. The Voting should be restricted to One vote / One person i.e. not multiple voting

2. The voting from lan lines should be free like in American Idol (where the channel pays for the phone). They are already making a huge amounts during the commercials.

3. Most Imp, Voting should be restricted to just 2-3 hours after the show is over. Actually when people watch someone sing, if they like his singing and a true music lovers, they vote instantly. The first vote always goes on singing as it is 'Dil se'. But as time goes by other influences like Region / religion / language and emotional factors come into play.
In American Idol, the voting line is open 2 hrs and not for weeks and weeks, like in the Final of SRGMP so that more votes can me earned.

4. Normal sms rates should apply and not premium rates.

5. Part of each SMS should go to some charity like in the case of Nach Baliye.

I will await as to what other have to say on this.

Doesn't American Idol multiple voting? Or is that just for the finale. I am 😕

Right you are! May be that's why internet votes were not counted because they did not contribute anything to their kitty...
