Where do we draw a line on the punishments for simple crimes? But his punishment is too barbaric and shocking I think.

When a person is hungry and needs food what can he do if he has no job and money?

5 amputated for theft in Iran

TEHERAN - FIVE convicted thieves have each had a hand amputated in the northern town of Hamedan, the news agency ILNA reported on Thursday.

Local prosecutor general Ahmad Bighlari said the men had been found guilty of repeat offences. Their names were not disclosed but he said they were all aged 'a little over 25'.

Under Iran's syariah-based Islamic law, amputation is the penalty for crimes such as repeated thefts.

With poverty on the rise, the number of amputations in the Islamic republic has also been increasing. -- AFP

This is what theocracy does to a state eventually.

Unsurprisingly enough, even such horrific punishments aren't reducing - let alone stop - the rate of crime. So obviously corporeal punishments aren't the best way to control a state.

And by the way, as per me, I find the thought of stealing ones arm far worse than stealing a material object.

Gosh this is utter rubbish. Consensual being twisted.
It should be "Caveat Emptor"
What you see is what you get.

Saw this on CNN.
This is utter nonsense!
You cant have sex with your consent and then file for rape!
And why was the sentence "rape by deception"
He didnt rape her, so why not use something like "sex by deception" and then give him a warning and let him go -_-
What has this world come to?

But even sex by deception does not fit the bill. He did not deceive her at all. She "assumed" he was "Israelite Jew" and he "assumed" she did not care if he was an "Arab".

But what next make a law that people exchange bio-data before physical relations to ensure they are ok with everything?🤔

this is not meaningful justice.. there is nothing called rape by deception since rape itself means use of force and no craftiness!!!! even there date rapes are right fully convicted..
this case is stupid.... so if a 15 year old shows a fake id and goes around as a 20 year old... it becomes statutary.. and wouldnt be called 'gettingn it by consentual deception and therefore not a rape"!!!!!

Actually rape is intercourse without consent. Force is not necessary for rape.

Many jurisdictions do recognize rape by deception a crime. Hypothetically, a person would not willingly have intercourse with someone who is not Christian. Their partner lies about being Christian. When they find out they can charge rape by deception because their consent was obtained under false pretenses. Rape by deception conviction is intended to prevent and punish people who lie, mislead, or trick people into sexual relations. However, in reality it is tricky to apply. Are people really expected to mind read and know what is relevant to the other person? Where is the line between actual deception and innocent ignorance?
