Ek topic kafi nahin thi kya? 😆

The public in general loves to be entertained. And what can be a better way than watching a movie (though as per me, I find watching senseless movies to be the worst form of torture ever). Now why celebrities are given heroic status - or worse, worshiped as God - is something that I can't comprehend. Of course I too have my favorites, and I too get defensive when they are overly criticized, but there is a limit up to which I can go on defending them.

One thing I don't understand is, why do the majority of the audiences get fooled in thinking that celebrities are absolutely like what they come across as or portray onscreen? Celebrities are human beings and they are inherently flawed like the rest of us. Thinking otherwise is ludicrous and leads to frustration and unnecessary backlash about them. Most put up an act of being humble and what not when they come in front of the camera. I have my favorites, but I have never fancied the idea of meeting them in real life. There is a certain charm about watching them onscreen, so let it remain that way. I feel the charm about them will drain out if you get to see them face to face.

Anyway, most of their careers are very unstable; one day they are at the top, and the next day the audiences won't even care for their existences.

Whether or not they deserve to be paid astronomical amounts might be debatable, but most celebrities who have reached the zenith of their career do work hard and have the talent in them to reach out to billions of people worldwide.

That topic is more of economics of wages now.

Agree with the rest though. Celebrities are celebrities not because it ought to be that way, because we let them be that way. What would the value of SRK be if despite all his hit films no one cared for his life beyond the films?

Why do you feel that they NEED to be paid a LOT ? Is it bcoz as you say that they struggle a lot and work hard?
Dont our soldiers, the menial labourers , the rickshaw pullers and many others struggle and work much harder than these actors? Of course they do ! But then theres no glamour attached to their work. A real soldier doesnt appear as glamorous as SRK acting as one in Veer zaara ! Obviously so as theres no pan cake or background music or larger than life action scenes to boot .
I think the actors are more popular than the real heros because of effective packaging and marketing . Its the presentation that makes all the difference. The real life heros or heroines dont stand a chance as they lack this kind of marketing or media value. See the exception in case of our cricket players ! What a difference marketing and media makes between players of cricket as compared to say, hockey !

Nope, hard work has got very little correlation to how much one is paid. I was just implying that they do work hard irrespective of their income.

Btw, indirectly it is us audiences who pay them so much. If we as a whole stopped giving them more importance than they deserve and stopped buying every products that they endorse, then they would not be paid such monstrous amounts.

My reply had been to the post above mine, actually .

Exactly, its our craze for them that makes them demand and get all that they do ! Anyway I m not crazy about any of these actors nor any cricketeers 😆 Btw Dhoni has just got endorsements to the tune of Rs 2.10 billion , making him the the most paid sportsperson, surpassing Sachin !

I would say the high price paid to celebrities is not really the compensation for hard work, but more like the cost of fame. Otherwise a celebrity is no different from a lesser known singer, actor, dancer, sportsman etc. Some are equally good just not famous, some may not be as great – but put just as much work if not more.

The high cost is for the loss of privacy, the hounding of paparazzi, and people getting kicks from intruding in their lives. The average person lives free, dies free. They are free to make mistakes and only few around will speak and care. They can love, marry, breakup, have children and not worry about explaining their decisions to the world. They can use any product they want without worrying about perceptions. Most of us would probably go nuts under that sort of scrutiny. So I guess money is the only compensation for that insanity.

Looks like you are justifying celebrities' compensation.
