Abhay Deol discusses work, commercial and offbeat cinema and how the audience should decide whether they like the movie on their own and not by reading reviews.
His roles have always been different. From his debut in Socha Na Tha to his critically acclaimed performance in Dev D, Abhay Deol has carved a niche for himself by being original. "I'm not against the roles that have been offered. Had it been someone else, they would have probably taken it up. I was against the entire 'you do what I tell you to do attitude'. I don't mind doing song and dance, but if it's what I have to do all the time, then I'm going to get irritated," he says candidly.
Critics call him a non-commercial actor, but Abhay says that these are just names. "I've acted in commercial cinema like Socha Na Tha and Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd . also, I believe that any film can be made commercial if it's made well. Today, we have a sensible and educated audience who likes their cinema. Dev D had a great script and was brilliantly adapted from Devdas, which is why it did well and worked for the audience," he says.
While praising the audience for appreciating new cinema and the road Bollywood is taking, he also urges viewers not to go by what critics write in newspapers or magazines. "If they blindly go by the review, they cannot decide for themselves if the story is good or bad, or if the performances are good or bad. That's the main reason why I don't understand what people mean by commercial or art films. If it's made well, people will watch it.
Although his surname is a big one in the industry, Abhay has made his own mark and is wanted by directors. He expresses openness to work in both mainstream and offbeat cinema. "Both styles are different and they give you a chance to portray your talent," he says.
Abhay is currently shooting for Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Milegi Na Doobara and has finished Aisha. Once these are over, his production house's first film Basra will be made. " Zoya's film is half done and now I will start shooting for Basra. Aisha is done and you can see the promos on TV. It was great fun working with Hrithik and Farhan, but I can't discuss anymore," he says.
When asked how his family has reacted to his fame, he says that his father is proud of him. "But he wants to see me do may more song and dance sequences. Initially he was stunned when he saw Dev D, but enjoyed the movie during subsequent movies.
