Creative Writing Contest

Now that the Debate contest is done with. Whew! 😆 Its time to move on to the next contest. Now here is something for the souls who really do not have much interest in debating or arguing things our. For the more creative ones who like to express themselves in many ways. Yes, as some of you had asked for - the next in store is a creative writing contest.

Your task for creative writing is to pick one picture story and write a story based on it. The story you pick need not be an official entry from the contest. There are several just for fun entries too that you may pick too. However, the story must have been posted before June 27th on the thread. So get your creative juices flowing to pen down how you were inspired by these images, what stories came in your mind and create your own unique story.


Along with your short story.Short introduction on which picture story you picked and why. Please provide link to that story page or post. Your title should be the same as the title of the picture story.


DO NOT POST YOUR STORY HERE.

You will PM your story to me. I will then post the story anonymously in the contest thread for others to read and enjoy.



Deadline for submission is July 17th.

To incite participation. All participants get their own pie. Whether to enjoy or fling at others. Its their choice.

LOL! Lets not fling the pie's ok. Please just serve yourself a big slice and lets have a nice clean fun creative contest. I'll serve up a delicious banquet for the awards ceremony.

PLease let us know if you need any help in this contest. but if votes are by the jaanta too, then it should not be much of a problem.

Please clarify if the contestants should post each picutre and have a narrative of the story below each pic or should it be free and easy?

I guess since it is a creative writing contest the pictures need not be posted but just mentioned as it can act as a distraction.

Pictures need not be posted. The creative writing short story, should be based on inspired by the photo story. This is your creative personal take. How you interpreted the story. How you tie the pictures together in your mind.

So essentially it is that we will pick one picture from the list that Sarina gave, write a short story based on it, and then submit it to her before the deadline - or is it?

First off, are we choosing just one picture (pie) and making a story on it, or do we have to use all the pies listed for our story? Are the pies just an example or is that the topic?

And, for a start, unlike pictures depicting human beings or an event in it, there isn't much to make up from pictures of desserts (except that most looks tasty, and my taste buds are craving for them!). Like we cannot endlessly describe how great it feels tasting Kay Lime Pie. I feel there should be a story with substance, and an event in the story that would focus on one of the dessert. We should make a connection between the pie and our story, and show why the pie is an important aspect of it. I don't think a whole story can be based on a pie.

As far as judgments go...just two winners? No first, second, third? Maybe two sets of first, second and third? What if the same person win from both junta choice set and judges choice set? Also, when you say public voting, do you mean counting 'likes'? If so, members should be warned to not like posts crazily (many times, without even reading it) like many have the habit of doing (I myself fall into it at times). I know that this time, unlike the DM contest, we won't have members' identity open, but the friend-PMing-friend and friend-liking-friends'-post option is still out. I think it's better to have a poll (not here at IF if there are more than ten entries) and count the votes the entries get instead of counting 'likes'. "Like", instead of being a valuable and precious thing, has become kind of like a free good, like air...something you get every now and then, irrespective of what you have done. Air is valuable, but no one gives a damn about it. Same goes for 'likes' which is being misused.

Coming to rules, how long can a short story be? I have read short stories that are, in reality, over thirty pages in a MS Word document. Can you give word limits, or better yet, page limits (in MS Word; I assume most uses that for writing) specifying the font size. Personally, the shorter a story, the better it is (as long as one can fit everything in it, and it doesn't seem forcibly shortened) - most members are or get lazy once they are done with a few stories in the beginning. Going through pages after pages isn't what many will be doing (unless the story happens to be very interesting and gripping). And the "No sexually explicit material allowed" one goes as well, right?

MS Word doesn't point out all grammatical errors (frankly, it does nothing. Just point out the very basic ones that everyone is aware of), so it won't be of much use. Personally, focus should be more on the story, the writing style, the content, etc than the grammar. Even the most accomplished writer (Stephen Meyer, anyone?) makes grammatical mistakes (which is precisely why editors are surviving). Of course grammar should be taken into account, but it shouldn't be the most important criteria. Like writing "is" after "you" can be penalized, but sometimes, grammar can be right down confusing and even the person who is very much skilled in English will make those mistakes. Oh darn, just read you wrote "nothing advanced" - I assume it was for the writing. I could have cut out this whole paragraph if only I'd read what you wrote properly in the beginning.

If you want more entries and have no problems with non-DM members joining, then you can contact the Writing section of this forum. You will find more willing members on that way. Though personally I'd love it if some DM member wins the contest rather than a stranger (to me), I think it's better to have entries than none at all.

Hey Labib , I dont think the story has to be basd on the pix of the pies 😆 As far as I understood the story should be based on the pictures in the "tere ghar mein" contest. Link has been provided by RTH and summer in their posts above. Just check ! 😊 I wonder if Sarina loves Pies enough to have us all writing stories on them 😆

I first thought he misspelled pics and wrote pies. Alas, it wasn't a misspell.

Then I thought, he already submitted his short story. That wasn't the case either.

I suspected that his fever might have returned. You know, that jungle fever.

Question to Sarina: That TGM thread is still not closed. Does that mean, any/all new picture entries that would be submitted could be considered for the short story contest? What's preventing me from posting a picture entry on that thread that's tied to my short story (say in the last minute)?

POH must really love Pies too much to be so misled 🤣
