This goes to show that music has no barriers. Thats the beauty of Indian music. I really liked tat line in that Rafi article, where she says that even MTV couldn't fully influence India. How true!
There is a lot of talk about how the western culture is influencing our music where a poppish number Aashiq Banaya Apne gets the honours as compared to some classical song like Dheere Jalna, but at the end of the day, there is so much of appreciation for music like this and thats the greatness..
When I was listening to that song from Baiju Bawra, Oh Duniya ke Rakhwale, and I was doing an assignment for uni, and wasn't really listening to it with attention, but that song was so powerful that without realising there were tear drops on my assignment, my lenses displaced and I had goosebumps... I mean that song was just fantastic...... Rafi's power.. outstanding
SPB has given some super hits in Telugu, hearing him render some Thyagaraja Kirtanas in Paaduta Tiyaaga makes my heart weep..he is outstanding..
Same with the countless singers in India..
We talk about all the politics in SRGMP and the rigging, but at the end of the day we must all stand and give an ovation to GS for bringing out some super talent.. That show has been a reason why I started appreciating music so much.
Thanks a lot for such posts and please keep posting more like this.
