Interesting article on SPB. I always thought he grew up in Chennai because I never detected any issues with his tamil. Amazing job working on the diction. Tamil has some unique sounds that are not there in Telugu e.g. the R-sound often written as 'zh'. I have picked up occasional diction issues in TAmil, even from KJY and Chitra.

Wow, Thanks a million. That Rafi Saab was, is, and will always remain the best is an accepted fact.

About his accent, Balu admits that he has not reached perfection despite the great improvement he has made over the years. "But singing is basically an art of expressing and conveying a particular thought. The knowledge of the language or at least the meaning of the words one is singing is very important, for without that the song will have an incorrect feel, and the singer cannot put in much feeling,"

Beautiful !! Thanks a LOT for this post.

FYI he hosts a lovely classical telugu musical program, Paaduta Tiyaga, its absolutely divine.. I think Hema and Karu took part in that show too !

My goodness..Just listening to Rafi's Oh Duniya Ke Rakhwale from Baiju Bawra.....its absolutely divineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... getting goosebumps...

I cant get over it.. growing up in a generation where our only knowledge of old songs comes from remixes we hear, i cant believe that there is so mcuh of beauty in old songs.

for tha treason, I am grateful to saregamapa and other musical shows for atleast educating us about such heavenly songs..

and thnx again for the post...

ThanQ Automother I am a die hard Rafi fan. That man IS a torch bearer to all other singers.Singer of Singers. No matter what others say he is better than even Lata as his versions of the same song are more popular and pleasing than hers. Eg Aaj Kal mein dhal gaya din huva tamam.from Aaj aur Kal Having lived in south India for many years I know Tamil and Kannada. I Love SPB and Yesudas but only when they sing in South Indian languages. When it comes to Hindi songs I personaly did not like their work.

Thanks all. Glad you all liked the articles
These articles just goes to show how diverse and rich our Indian music is and the differences in singing in different languages and it is for us to understand, accept and enjoy the music.
I really dont like when singers are compared to likes of Rafi, SPB or Kishore Kumar. It really trivialises their years of work and effort.
Again I myself was impressed with subtleities of diction in HIndi language and why it does not sound the same when nonHIndi speaking people sing Hindi songs. But again I also liked the fact mentioned in one of the articles that if we concentrate on melody we may be able to forgive relatively few diction mistakes.
But I was particularly impressed at how humble SPB is in admitting his limitations and admiring other singers. Thats what makes a good singer,
But then again, now adays the competition is getting much tougher with at least10 singers coming out every year in the music reality shows. So it is hard to make a good name in the industry than it was in those good olden days.

Thanks for the articles. I am to happy to note that both gentlemen sang
in Bengali. There has always been a lot of talk on this forum about
pronounciation and while it is important, most people first look for
technical prowess and then soul. Language should never be barrier to
enjoying good music. Nor should singing talent be disregarded because
of accents. As a Bengali I am happy to say that Bengalis often welcome
non-Bengalis into the singing fraternity because they would rather enjoy
more beautiful voices rather than less. Now recitations - -that's another
standard! 😛
