Thanks all. Glad you all liked the articles
These articles just goes to show how diverse and rich our Indian music is
and the differences in singing in different languages and it is for us to
understand, accept and enjoy the music.
I really dont like when singers are compared to likes of Rafi, SPB or
Kishore Kumar. It really trivialises their years of work and effort.
Again I myself was impressed with subtleities of diction in HIndi language
and why it does not sound the same when nonHIndi speaking people sing
Hindi songs. But again I also liked the fact mentioned in one of the
articles that if we concentrate on melody we may be able to forgive
relatively few diction mistakes.
But I was particularly impressed at how humble SPB is in admitting his
limitations and admiring other singers. Thats what makes a good singer,
But then again, now adays the competition is getting much tougher with
at least10 singers coming out every year in the music reality shows. So it
is hard to make a good name in the industry than it was in those good
olden days.
Thanks for the articles. I am to happy to note that both gentlemen sang
in Bengali. There has always been a lot of talk on this forum about
pronounciation and while it is important, most people first look for
technical prowess and then soul. Language should never be barrier to
enjoying good music. Nor should singing talent be disregarded because
of accents. As a Bengali I am happy to say that Bengalis often welcome
non-Bengalis into the singing fraternity because they would rather enjoy
more beautiful voices rather than less. Now recitations - -that's another
standard! 😛
