Remember this photo?

This is a pic of one of the newborn baby killed due to a deadly Methyl Iso Cynate gas that leaked at Union Carbide plant in Bhopal in December 1984, killing him and more than 20,000 others in subsequent years. It was awarded with the UN world press photo of the year in 1985.

While whatever happened aftermath remains both forgotten yet unforgettable, today was the day of the first judgment verdict in this case, 26 years later.

All 8 Indians representing the Union carbide way back in 1984 are convicted, but what is the maximum quantum of punishment that they will get?

2 years imprisonment.

There are heavy protests outside courts and the country's top journalists and other experts in media are extremely disappointed with this verdict.

The UCIL chairman, Warren Henderson, remains free and no charges are levied against him.

Who is to blame?
Our corrupt political system?
Or our poor state of judiciary?

lets have a debate with all your valued opinions here.

.

Yeah, i think the people of Bhopal did get a small sum of money every year in terms of compensation which was a rip off, sadly, u knw this has also resulted In long term health issues to the local residents, and 2 years imprisonment is bull locks.

I get petrified even today when I think of this incident..

But, I think imprisonment of the accused is just BS.. as we cannot bring back the dead and cure people afflicted with long-term/short-term gas-related diseases etc.. So according to me, convicting anyone is just silly..

Yet again, I guess there have been hundreds who had gone through the cost, time and almost everything to get a proper a judgement from the judiciary. I feel it's an injustice to people who have spent two and a half decades just to get some justice work done! And the accused are imprisoned just for 2 years..

Yes..It is a shame to award 2 years imprisonment to those 8 accused. I do not know on what basis the Magistrate of Bhopal court awarded 2 years imprisonment to those accused? Is it money power or political connections that has come to the relief of those accused? Civil Society Organizations and media should take up the issue right now to ensure that the culprits are punished stringently.......

😕

Well, it has been a shame really. Bhopal tragedy never got the support it should have from media, common man and most imp the GoI.

Why on earth was Anderson allowed to leave Indian soil? What did the great hope of India (at that time) Rajeev Gandhi do? Why did the successive govts not try and finish this case as soon as possible, probably because this issue never became a poll issue. Why didn't GoI seek Anderson's extradition, if it has any shame left then it should do it right now.

Where are the so-called human rights activists? Where are the Arundhati Roys, Teesta Setalvads, Harsh Mandhers, Barkha Dutts?

Its a case where the govt, judiciary and the corporate are all hand in glove. Bhopal gas victims have been fighting for justice for more than 25 yrs and what did they get? Don't be surprised if tomorrow they turn into naxalites!

I wonder how much of a cover up has occurred.

In China they execute the main guys responsible.

its the greateast judicial mockey ever displayed....that too without an iota of shame...thats all that can be uttered about this.
but heck....victims wont give up so easily.......the fight will carry on to the end..
btw it was really no use convicting Anderson now. hes a 90-year old recluse now, a sentencing NOW wouldnt have made any difference to someone who'd die a few days later , as it is.
the punishment should have been meted out years ago, but that time saw the biggest cover-up of all times.
its a shame to humanity, to india, to capitalism

We don't have to be barbaric like China.

However, what is appalling is that justice took 25 long painful years, and when it came it was a useless and shameful joke in the name of atrocity.

Accidents happen, humans make mistakes and sometimes mistakes are terribly costly. Bhopal Gas Tragedy is the worst mistake a human can make. However, once a mistake is made own up to it. Accept the blame, do the time - but most importantly you have to empathize with those people's whose lives you have now ruined forever and truly try to make it up to them. So much could have been done immediately, so much should have been done in terms of financial, medical, social and psychological relief. The region is still paying - a namesake jailtime will do no good. What we need is to make Union Carbide (now Dow) bow down to the common man and serve their needs and make up for 25 years of hell.

White collar crime like this is the worst. They get away with murder with just a rap on the wrist. We need more corporate accountability. Really make corporations civically responsible to the people.
