Tuesday, May 25 - episode 22: Update By Eljay
The old man comes to the gate and stares at the house. (On a personal note, the facade of the house resembles the facade of my father's ancestral home, which has been sold, and for a minute, I wondered if they were using the same house, since that house has been used for many film shootings in Kerala, but on closer scrutiny, there are differences, so this is not the same house) Inside the house, Saravana is calling the taxi driver to hurry up, mom asks him to eat something, he says he is late and will eat at the station, and leaves. Paati comes in, looks at her vethilai petti, sees that there is no vethilai and asks g.daughter Meena to go and get her some vethilai, paaku and suNNaambu. Meena goes outside, sees the old man and asks him what he wants, does he want food, etc.? He does not say anything, continues to stare at the house, so she goes and calls her Periamma (KK? what does that stand for? I must have missed the part where Roja named her KK and gave the reason)
Periamma comes out, asks the old man what he wants, he remains silent, she looks at him and suddenly it dawns on her - this is her FIL, and she asks Meena to go and call her Periappa and Paati. Periappa comes running out, and so does Paati. Paati comes out with some filmi dialogs like she would be satisfied if her uyir goes out at his feet and so on. Periappa asks thatha to come inside, he goes and sits on the thinnai, and says that his mother told him that he was born there, and so the thinnai will do for him. He asks for some food, so Periamma goes and gets him some food. (Apparently the menu for that day is sambar, poriyal, and so on!) He takes out a coconut shell and she serves him rice and sambar in that. Just then, a taxi draws up and Saravana gets out. He goes inside to get something, and Periappa tells him that this is his thatha and asks him to get the old man's aseervatham. He tells Periappa that Saravana is going for an important interview which will give him a promotion at work and a big salary increase. After some hesitation, he bends down and the old man takes the food and throws it on him. Saravana is angry because his face and shirt are ruined, so he goes inside to change, saying he is going to be late now for that train. He tells them to send the old man away. After he leaves, the old man also gets up, saying his job is over, overriding Paati's protests, and leaves.
The whole family goes to the gate to see thatha walking away without a backward glance, and as he is going, Muthukumar comes in. Periappa tells him that he just passed thatha, Paati is busy weeping, and MK turns to look at the old man's receding figure.
A taxi draws up and Saravana gets down. He is angry because he missed his train because of the old man, and just then Meena is listening to the news and she calls them all to the TV. It seems that the train from Chennai to Kovai met with an accident outside Arkonam, and Paati realizes that Saravana is alive because he was prevented from catching the train by the old man. KS offers thanks to his father's picture, while the old man is seen sitting on the steps of some temple.
Tamil's house, everyone is getting ready for the girl seeing ceremony. AM calls for Meena, because he can't find his angavastram, she finds it, he puts it on and says he is going to his friend's house because there is a girl seeing ceremony going on there, and leaves. Kavitha is getting everything ready, she goes to see if Tamil is ready, but she sees Vasanthi sitting and applying makeup in front of the mirror instead of getting Tamil dressed up. She scolds Vasanthi, Vasanthi fusses, they make up. Meena is upset that hubby is going out, Sada comes in, she tells him about it, he says "Vidu akka". Kavitha comes there, sees Sada and tells him that there is a rowdy in his neighborhood who is following her, if she catches him, he will get a slipperaala adi from her, so Sada escapes from her and goes inside.
The groom's people come in, they ask about AM, and Meena, Sada, Kavitha and everyone does this rolling of eyes and looking at each other business.

Girl seeing padalam - the groom's side arrives with some fruit platters. The A.Malai clan minus A.Malai extend a warm welcome. After the camera does a "catch me if you can " round at all the uneasy faces - missing A.Malai is the sole reason !! - the girl is seen by all and sundry. Tamizh wants to have a word with the groom. The 3 1/2 feet would be MIL jumps - "payyane kekkalai !!" "payyan" says that he also wants to talk - " avanga munnadi kettu ttanga...I like that.." The girl and boy adjourn to the backyard - Meena frets, Sada pacifies.
Well, Tamizh just asks "my conditions are ok??" Groom in return asks "and mine??" Sada intervenes a few times and avoids any further mishap. Groom's dad puts his foot down "ayya vOda neenga ellam enge veedu paarkka varum pOthu date fix pannalam, ok??" Another round of catch me if u can !!!
Saravanan goes to his office - every one welcomes him - clapping their hands. he goes in to meet his boss - Shailaja - who is in tears. It is obvious that she carries a torch for Sara. She has not eaten any thing..blah blah.... Sara makku is not able to see the bulb burning in her head. She wants to go out and eat but Sara says that his dad is well respected in this town - "ipdi ladies kooda thaniya hotel llam pOnathu illai.." But finally agrees to go out with her. Office peon wags

Back to A.Malai household. A.Malai is back from his friend's house and brags that the alliance got fixed just because of him. Sada musters courage and asks - "unga own daughter girl seeing epdi pOchunnu kekka kooda illiye??" A.Malai is categorical "why should I?? It doe not meet with my approval anyways !!" Another catch me if u can round by the camera..and freeze on Tamizh

Sadha asks his mama A.Malai , Thamzihkku nitchayam , you absconded , nyayama .. A.Malai says he isn't interested in this proposal .. Meena starts to pulambify , he doesn't talk like a father for 4 girls .. very irresponsible .. Sadha pacifies her & requests A.Malai to visit groom's parents & fix the wedding date .. A.Malai clearly tells Thamizh , "i can't visit them .. i insulted them in the same place & if i go back to them , it's an great insult for me .. Thamizh , if u trust me , wait for an yr , i'll conduct ur wedding aaha oho nu .. you can do as per ur wish , but don't compel me to do something , in which i'm not interested" .. Saying so , he leaves the arena .. Thamizh comforts her mom , says , let everything happen as per their fate & leaves to work .. Meena prays to god to change her hubby's mind ..
Beach .. A.Malai , in deep thoughts ... A lady tries to commit suicide .. A.Malai saves her with the help of few others .. Probes in , you look like a family girl .. why have u taken such a foolish decision .. Lady says her family is the reason .. and she took this decision purposefully to hurt her parents .. A.Malai wonders .. Lady explains "i work in a private concern .. my father is an lazy goose .. i'm the only bread winner in my family .. many proposals came for me , but none materialised .. Finally one last proposal , i too was interested .. but the guy refused to marry me .. Reason , my dad himself has talked ill of my character .. i confronted my father .. And he replied tht he doesn't want to lose my earnings .. i couldn't bear it .. And so took this decision .. Let my death be a savukku adi for all father's who lives on his daughter's earnings" .. A.Malai kku yaaro kannathula araincha feeling .. Crowd talks bad abt her father , maanam kettavan , blah blah blah .. A.Malai walks away .. Tht Lady walks to Sadha [ada paavi đ˛] .. He thanks & praises her wonderful acting ...
Thamizh retuns from work .. Meena gives her paal payasam & updates her abt A.Malai's change of mind .. Thamizh is doubtful .. All sisters congratulate her .. Thamizh goes to her dad & asks the reason behind his change of heart .. AM narrates her the beach incident .. Adds , he saw Thamizh in tht lady .. And he couldn't bear Thamizh taking such a decision .. Some more urukkamana talks .. AM realises his mistakes .. Repents for insulting Eka the other day .. vaazhnthu kettavan , ethukku vettiveerappu .. now understood the yethartham .. Assures to visit groom's side the next day .. Thamizh says his wish is her wish .. Rest of the clan , happily join them .. Thamizh says she wasn't angry with him as the rest of the family , even when he opposed this proposal .. AM is pleased .. Feels proud of Thamizh .. Adds , u r not my daughter , but my mother .. Family gets emotional ...

KS' house. Karthik's assistants take some lathe tools inside. Patti wonders what they are. Meena kindal adichufies...all her 3rd grand son's kaingaryam...his lathe opened some 6 months back faced the same fate as that of his earlier business ...[auto spare parts shop & fancy stores]...strong , tight lock to the shop. [ Adutha business Lock Shop ]. Bank takes the credit to seal the shop. Karthik comes out , Meena sarcastically refers him as " kadaikalukku moodu vizha nadathum nayagan". Nayaganukku suru surunu varadhu..raises his hand at Meena. KK comes to her rescue , scolds son for raising hand at vayasu vandha thaayilla ponnu. KK entrusts meena with a delivery woman job...deliver the specially prepared appam at Prema's house. Meena evades the job ...important assignment & try to pass on the buck to vetti karthik. No use...nayagan refuse. MK comes & was requested by mom to do the errand. He excuses Saying urgent work in the stores . As he nears the door hears KK's polambal about prema & her love for appam. MK makes an about turn...left right left marches inside , grabs the appam thooku from mom's hand & joooooot.
MK appathookudan azar at athai's house. Inside an arguement in full swing between prema & her mom...subject of the argument is a gold chain...prema wants to wear it for the friend's engagement she is attending while mom refuses to give it considering her carelessness...already has lost gold ring . So a strict no no from mom.MK comes to Prema's rescue in convincing athai. Happy Prema asks MK to drop her at the engagement venue. MK in cloud nine , mugamellam pattam poochi parakkudhu. Anandha savari with prema as the pillion rider.
Mr. Annamalai, Mrs. Annamalai , & Miss Loosu Annamalai reach Ekambaram's house in a taxi. Sada arrives behind them in his vaganam... adanga Osi auto. Meena shares her happiness with brother at her husband's welcome change. Thank God for the timely help thru the girl. Sada unleashes the truth... it was all a drama conceived , produced & directed by him. Meena is surprised & happy.
EK greets them warmly. His wife as usual has a kadu kadu face. She gets irritated at AM's bloated ego & the excessive pantha he puts on during conversation. EK 's over politeness further increases Mrs. EK's B P. Talk, then , turn towards engagement date...meena promises to fix one in the coming month. EK is happy at his ex boss' consent for the alliance , asks wife to offer them coffee , tiffin. AM throws the bombshell...not come here as guest to eat tiffin...the atmosphere gets tense...the camera does [ in roja's words] " catch me if you can" stunt on all faces. With a [false] smile AM announces that they have come there as their sambandhi & nothing less than a full meal will do. [ Poor Joke]. Habba t he tense situation eases & smile appear on all faces including Mrs. EK.
Post lunch. Sada mind talking... katting mind fort [ manak kottai]....Habbada oru vazhiya Thamizh matter over , now my route is cleared , right time to make advance booking with akka/ mama for Kavi's hand. Right time he hears akka speaking about Kavi's marriage to AM....soon they should find a good groom for Kavi also like this . AM replies...No way ....he agreed to Thamizh's alliance solely due to the age factor...For Kavi he will seek only an IPS or an IAS varan .Kavi's alliance will be according to his wish. Poor Sada his mind fort thool thool .... wonders " ini eppo padichu , eppo IAS aagi eppo Kavi kazhuthil thali kattaradhu "?đ
