Hi guys!!! Guess I should introduce myself first - I'm Lola, and I recently started watching Geet on my friend Janaki's suggestion (thanks hun šŸ¤—)... it has started off really well, as many soaps do, giving us a daily dose of Gurmeet's hotness and more importantly, making us think about a number of disheartening social circumstances that exist in some Indian households. One that really bother's me is the aggressive and repressive behavior of her family, particularly the grandfather and that 🤬 Brij... I mean, respect for elders and family unity are among the trademark virtues of our culture, but is there a line between respectful obedience and outright victimhood? We've had a number of other shows and Bolly films that told us about kids who are disrespectful and defiant, and we've rejoiced in seeing them learn their lesson... is Geet the other extreme? Is her tolerance of her family's behavior justifiable and even admirable in light of desi values, or does she need to grow a spine and stand up for herself? Or, as SRK's Swades conveyed to us in addition to many other thought-provoking messages, are there some things that we city folks and/or NRIs will never be able to understand about small-town India that we should just accept and move on?

Looking forward to you guys' views on this and many other topics as the show (hopefully) becomes even more interesting!

welcome to the geet forum, lola!! šŸ¤—

nicee topic!! =D
i personally think there needs to be a balance of obedience and independence. like doing some things the way your family would want you to do, shouldn't be a burden or something you have absolutely no say in like things were in Geet's case. i think she needs to stand up to her family at least sometimes because she has seen the effects of being under their complete control. i think it'd also be vital for her to stand up for self against her family, specifically brij and dar ji. she'll gain self-confidence and independence, which she deserves, and im sure she'll ultimately reach that balance of independence and family control =]

Thanks for jumping in Mari and Sabzie, and thanks for the welcome šŸ¤— Totally agree with your POV Sab, esp since I come from a really really easygoing and affectionate family... we're def traditional, but I'd like to think I've been raised in such a way that I respect them and the overall culture voluntarily... this ruthlessness and force makes you rebel even harder when you've finally had enough... but at the same time I don't wanna see her totally abandon them, I hope they show her change and change them also rather than having to leave in order to find and assert herself. What do you think they'll actually show?

i agree completely Lola., my family is the same and i think the culture and and the traditions shouldn't be totally forced on someone, like you said it does lead to rebellion and even hatred.

im not sure but i think they'll eventually show, geet standing up for herself like completely but i wonder how far she'll take it and how it'll happen.
