we wud all love to know whether alien life exists or not. We have believers as well as non believers. Seeing the enormity of the number of galaxies out there its highly probable that life (intelligent ) does exist somewhere outside Earth. The point is , is it wise to search for extraterrestrial forms of life & try to contact them ? what cud B the repurcussions?Do share your views.

Hey Angie, I don't know if you created this thread after reading Dr.Hawking's latest statement on this issue..

Stephen Hawking says trying to contact space aliens is 'too risky'
Renowned British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking says intelligent alien life-forms almost certainly exist, but trying to communicate with them is "too risky."

Their arrival, he says, would be like Columbus landing in the Americas, "which didn't turn out out very well for the Native Americans."

The 68-year-old Hawking speculates on alien life in a new documentary on the Discovery Channel in which says advance life-forms may be "nomads, looking to conquer and colonize."
=====

I personally have a different view. Agar ET civilisation humse advanced hai to most probably woh log humein pehle dhoondh lenge. Agar sab yahi sochte rahe hi doosri ET civilisation humare liye ghatak ho sakti hai to phir koi kisi se kabhi contact hi nahi kar sakega and that would be really shameful. Let us explore this anant brahmand, let us look for other people around in the universe. Let us understand this place.

There definitely are great risks to contacting extra-terrestrial life. The alien life could be hostile and destroy us. There are also unintended consequences, for example what if we contract new diseases and viruses from extra-terrestrial life. On a moral scale, we as humans could b harmful and cruel to the extra-terrestrial life (District 9, Avatar)

At the same time there are significant benefits. The advanced knowledge that extra-terrestrials could have - can significantly help us. Medical science and technology could advance great leaps, benefiting society in the long term. We could also answer some of our questions about the universe and better understand how we fit in the cosmos.

It all comes to a risk-benefit ratio. From my perspective, the benefits seem more lucrative and far outweigh risks.

@ Solidsnake- yes , I read his statement and kind of agree . I mean if we do contact hostile aliens what do we have to defend ourselves with. The example that he quoted about Columbus discovering America & fate of the natives cud very well be repeated .Curiosity can kill the cat 😉

Thats a positive view to have !If the aliens find us first they wud be more advanced then us. If they happen to be peaceloving then we are in luck, otherwise theres little we could do. The chances of aliens finding us seem to be much brighter than vice versa.

that's assuming that there are alien civilisations out there who haven't destroyed themselves before reaching such a level of technological advancement that allows them intergalactic space travel.

Sure, there may be extraterrestrial forms of life out there, but who cares? Live and let them live. I swear, these sci-fi movies are getting to y'all. 😆

One thing I fail to understand if ET are way advanced than us Earthe people , then why they are presumed or figured as looks that resembles to forefather of monkeys. If they are really technologically advanced they must have mechanism or technology to make them look better than us . If their physical apperance somehow looks like we think, then I believe they wont be selling mirror in their territory.

Are we not assuming that vanity and looks would be important of advanced civilizations. From what I have seen on earth, the smartest people tend to be most goofy looking and really do not care about looks at all.

^That and how are we defining "good looks" here, why should we assume aliens to hold an anthropomorphic view of beauty?. As an example, I'm sure a neantherdal woman was physically attractive to a neantherdal man, I doubt any human would find neantherdal woman to be attractive, I wonder if neantherdals found humans to be attractive?, probably not.
