WHY IS DEBO A WINNER, INSPITE OF SRGMP?
An underdog, a besura, a man whose voice cracks often, what else? What more has the man been accused of? A simple boy from a far away state in India, dreams of being a singer, embarks on a journey that many will not dream of. He goes on to participate in contests after contest, winning some, losing some. Does he lose his heart? No, there is a still better opportunity, SRGMP, contest 2005. He enters as a maverick, not so backed by the people, but then he is put in the great Ismail Darbar's Gharana and his fortune changes. His performances become better and better. His confidence, which is always at all time low due to his unglamorous background and some due to the embarrassment that he is put through by other people involved in the contest. With ID's able and careful grooming, Debo thrills the genuine music lovers by performing various different songs from aye zindagi, main hoon jhoomroo, etc till he wins every heart by his superb effort of na toh carvan ki talash hai. No where in the history has any participant dared to attempt this masterpiece all by himself and in final stages of the contest. He pulls it off and wins laurels for this. He becomes a serious contender for the winning post.
But in between he has to face serious charges of being a not-so-bura singer, a man who is liked only by his state, who is much elder than others, etc. Debo smiles through all this and with ID for his mentor marches on. The other mentors insult him regularly, sometimes by their actions ,sometimes by their marks, sometimes by their behavior and sometimes by their comments. It is to Debo's credit that he has not answered back even a single time, nor has he misbehaved in any way. This shows the bond between him and his mentor and ID's class. What does the honorable mentor advice him? Not to beg for votes, but to sing better and better. In the recently shown episode Debo has given credit for his better singing to all the mentors. All this speaks volumes for his character. It must be certainly not very comfortable for Debo also to be singing and dancing besides kids. This is a humiliation actually, but he has borne it with dignity. Had he come to this contest to be a dancer in front of so many people? But he has been the best of the three performers so far. That shows his adaptability and readiness to adjust.
Now what other charges does he face? Ma ka sapna?
What is so wrong in saying that? A man from a small town, reaching this height of glory is bound to be overwhelmed and emotional. Please remember, when the episode is being canned, the atmosphere is charged. Debo remembering his mother at that point shows him to be a very emotional and sentimental man. Better than being callous and fiercely competitive. His state backs him. The problem is not this, but that their respective states do not back their own contestants like Debo's does. Why shouldn't Assam and other NE states back him? Does he not deserve their love and support? He is a good person, a qualified Engineer, a son who loves his mom, who has a supportive wife and good family background. He is being mentored by none other the great Ismail Darbar Saab. This is a big, big achievement for any state, which has not seen glamour as its regular feature.
Does all this make Debo a bad singer? No, it plainly states that his home town loves him and wants him to do well.
The most important thing about Debo is that he has evolved as a singer over these months. He has not saturated. He is blooming and singing much better, proving that with time he will be much better. He has brought that velvety touch to his voice and an effortlessness to his performances, which the true music lovers have noticed. And hence they support Debo. Not going into the politics of the show, debo does not need SRGMP to build his career now. He has been taken under the wing of the great ID himself, and the man on the street has come to love him and his sensitive attitude. It will only take hard work, which all Debo admirers are sure ,he will.undertake.
