Challenging convention and stereotypes

Star One seeks to reach the new-age woman through disruptive protagonists and inspirational stories of its two new shows
Changing its focus from 15-25 to a broader 15 to 35-year-old audience, Star One promises a spanking new array of content comprising an entertaining mix of fiction, drama and reality shows. The new line-up of shows is a result of an in-depth research conducted by the channel which, according to its general manager Nikhil Mirchandani, threw up glaring gaps and startling new information on changing viewership trends as also a new set of audiences with a certain entertainment needs. Hence, with the aim of expanding its viewership base and filling these gaps, Star One is adding a range of new, refreshing and differentiated content in its prime-time band with the launch of two fiction shows from this week.

The shows are Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi and Rang Badalti Odhani. Geet... is a story of an 18-year- old Punjabi girl, who is abandoned by an NRI husband and how she faces the challenges and stands for the rights and values she believes in. ...Odhani, on the other hand, which is based in a village in Gujarat, is about a girl who takes destiny in her own hands when she is widowed at a very young age. "Both the shows present strong characters and issues not seen on other channels. They mirror desires and dreams of today's woman, who wants to chart out her own future. The protagonists of Geet... and ...Odhani are strong and assertive women, unlike the sacrificing and suffering protagonists of other shows. Also, the focus of these shows will not be extended joint families but the protagonists and other key characters that impact their lives," says Nikhil.

Having identified its core viewer, challenging convention and stereotypes through emotionally-inspiring storylines is going to be the channel's main focus. The core viewer, according to Nikhil, is the 23-year-old woman from Bhopal or any other small city or town who is young, confident and has a convincing and non-confrontationist approach. "She is the new-age woman who wants to work and empower herself," says Nikhil, adding, "Her on-screen fictional representation will have a disruptive and clutter-breaking effect." However, Star One is not completely doing away with its old image of an entertainment destination for youth that promised mischief, fun, friendship and romance. Not immediately, at least.

"We have shows like Milley Jab Hum Tum and Dill Mill Gaye that have a younger skew. But our core viewer has grown up. She used to be 18 and now she will be 23. Our key content drivers will be inspirational stories and strong protagonists," asserts Nikhil. He claims that Star One will reach as much as 75 per cent of the total TV audience universe with its new key content-drivers. "Both from audience and advertising perspective, the core and broader TGs have immense potential for growth," he adds. The makeover and re-branding seem to be right. Now we need to wait for the result.

Many hopes from this Odhani

Star One's Odhani Rang Badalti Jaaye is producer Yash Patnaik's latest offering. And true to his forte, Odhani... has a few mysteries waiting to unfold.

It's about Khanak (we love the name) and her childhood sweetheart, Suraj who live in Kutch, and city boy, Shantanu and his girlfriend Natasha. Both the couples are engaged to be married. Suraj works for Shantanu's dad's company. Shantanu is a typical spoilt brat, who rides bikes and gets into trouble even as his girl does everything possible to drill sense into him. He is the younger of two brothers and has yet to grow up. On the other hand, Suraj is a good hearted bloke, who dreams to marry and get Khanak home but as the promos suggest, he will die after their marriage and Shantanu will be responsible for his death. The panchayat (Pankaj Dheer plays the restrained sarpanch) wants to decide the punishment for Shantanu but it's Khanak who wants to seal his fate. Ab aage.

While the lead stars are nothing to write home about (mouthing lines, looking straight into the camera can't qualify as 'acting') we would still like to give them a chance to deliver in the forthcoming episodes. We have hopes especially from Yashashri Masurkar, a Marathi actress, who acted in a 'kabaddi-based' soap on a regional channel. And Maharashtrian actors have never let down in the past. Karan Thacker as the rakish Shantanu tries hard to be cool but is an eyesore, so is Priyanka Chibber as Natasha. Harpreet Singh as the camel-riding, gaanv ka bhola bhala gabru jawan is easy on the eye but has a squeaky voice.
The setting, the lingo (though we have said in the past the Kutch-Rajasthan lingo has starting coming out of our ears) everything is near perfect; now only if the story moves ahead with a feverish pace and engages the viewers.

Something tells us that the story is going to follow the Dor way (remember Nagesh Kukunoor's film about a young widow and a city girl, who comes to her to ask for mercy for her boyfriend who was responsible for the woman's husband's death) but we are not complaining. With veteran director Swapna Waghmare Joshi at the helm, we are hopeful the colours of this Odhani... won't fade with time.
Verdict:
Give it a try. It is definitely a respite from the channel's other 'young' shows.

Odhani's Yashashri seeing co-actor Harpreet?

Description: Rang badalti odhani leads Yashashri Masurkar and Harpreet Kaur allegedly seeing each other

Unlike Bollywood, TV has a tendency to bring the two protagonists together in reel as well as real life. Sharad Malhotra-Divyanka Tripathy, Sushant Singh Rajput-Ankita Lokhande, Avinash Sachdev-Rubina Dilaik are some examples.

According to grapevine, Yashashri Masurkar and Harpreet Kaur, leads of Star One and Beyond Dreamz productions' Rang badalti odhani, are allegedly an item.

A little birdie informs, "Right from the beginning, Yashashri and Harpreet seem to have developed a great bond. Their proximity to each other often sees them being teased by other actors and crew members. On most occasions, the duo sticks to each other. During the recent telecast party, Harpreet and Yashashri looked inseparable.

Harpreet's character Suraj will die in the show. Yashashri has already started to miss him. One can't help but wonder whether something is cooking between them."

Yashashri was quick to dispel any such notion. She says, "Harpreet is too sweet and a straight forward guy for me. You can't afford to be so nice in today's world. He's a dear friend and yes, I do miss him. However, I can assure you that there's nothing between us. I reckon he already has a companion."

If Harpreet isn't the right guy, what does the actress feel about her other co-actor, Karan Tacker.

"I rather die than see Karan. He's a friend too but we often fight like little kids," gushed the actress.

So, one ought to believe Yashashri. She's single and ready to mingle. However, Mr. Niceguy is a straight no for our girl. So, it's bad boys for Yashashri.

Shivani breaks down on show

TNN, Apr 19, 2010, 12.00am IST

Shivani Gosain
It's difficult to keep the real away from the reel sometimes. Shivani Gosain, who plays Hetalba in Rang Badalti Odhni had a similar experience when she broke down on the sets of the show.

It so happened that the entire cast was shooting for an actor's death scene. The scene required Shivani, who plays a greedy lady, to pick up the jewellery from the dead body. But Shivani got so emotional during the shoot that she couldn't stop her tears from rolling down. Says Shivani, "I kept reminding myself not to cry but I just got carried away by the whole atmosphere and couldn't stop myself from crying."
