What Shakti's Saturday Solo Really was About

I have been reading so many comments about Shakti's dance on Saturday, and I dont have the time to post my comments for each one of them, and so I am making this new thread to explain to everyone - whether you liked her act or not, I care less!!

It was Contemporary with Indo-fusion, as Rani had explained in her posts in some threads. But what Indo-fusion was it really?! I know many members have no clue about the different dance forms in India, from each region and state... So my explanation may not make you understand, but I want to do my part, and I am sure some people will get a clearer picture!!

First of all, I love that song - I have been hearing that since a kid, and each time I hear it, my heart beats so fast and patriotism spirit rushes to my whole body and I feel like I am in a different world... It makes me feel so happy and proud, and nostalgic too... Those who have paid attention to that song - each stanza represents a state in India - the lyrics are in that state's language, and on TV they show scenes from that particular state... So the song contains all the national languages in one - representing India as a whole and its unity with diversity!! Now enough explanation of the song - but this is required for the explanation of Shakti's dance.

Shakti did dance steps representing each state that came up in the song - either it was done as steps from a prominent dance form of that state, or shown as the popular sport or art of that particular state. Watch it carefully, and watch the dance steps and changes with each stanza - she moves from one state to another and her dance moves also changed accordingly... She had several Indian classical and folk forms mixed in it, and for Kerala she showed the famous snake boat race - Vallamkali done during Onam season, same as Pulikali done mainly during Onam!! Oh how I felt so much at home for that few seconds!!

I think this will help many to understand the real theme and concept followed in her dance and rather than foul mouthing her and putting her down, be proud of your nation for a minute and see how much diversity we carry and yet we all watch the same show outside all the regional boundaries!!

THANK YOU Akku!

But still, you know how it goes. "All Shakti did was contemporary!"

And what's more, what I find even more LOOOL, is that it very often comes from people who don't even know the HECK of what contemporary actually IS!

:) thanks for the post....i loved the performance too..i wouldnt have imagined mile sur as a song...but it was well chosen...well choreographed....without obviously showing the different states...it was very subtley and cleaverly and nicely put together....the ballet and contemporary was used very well!!
was interesting to watch...
.i had posted this on another thread.

of all the master's best, i thought shakti's choreography was the most interesting....most different and well done....im not creating this to start a comparison....im just saying in geeta's terminology as she told mayuersh and alisha and terry..."kudos to the master....kudos to the contestant!"

i thought the song was extremely well chosen....and cleverly chosen...the beats keep changing...and i found it interesting to watch....good job terence...good job shakti.

Thank you sneha! 🤗 I made the thread because of that same old excuse used to bash Shakti... She did so many different styles, and even had a different style on Friday, and even on both days last week. Then why keep on saying Shakti did Contemporary again!! LOL... Everyone has done one style several times, and even have that style in all their acts, and yet people are fine by that except for Shakti!!

You know Akku, each time something is done on stage, I actually go out and read or watch videos to understand all about it and what's different or new to it compared to the other styles so that I don't go about labeling anything and everything as contemporary or Hip Hop. You actually learn that there's so much truth in whatever these masters say, masters minus Geeta for me please!

With every single performance the equation is changing.

Firstly urban was contemporary, 😆 then pasa doble was contemporary, 😆then kalaripayattu was comtemporary,😆 then whacking was contemporary, 😆 then Jazz was contemporary 😆 and now indo-fusion was contemporary. 😆

But when they do Contemporary it becomes Freestyle!!!
😆 😆 😆

@ Sash -- Ami Tomay Valobashi a lotttt for posting that!!
Akku chechi, sooo true! The routine was very tough and there were so many changes, swift movements and all.. She did everything with grace. Was soooo technically correct. She's got to win, and even if she doesn't.. we'll never forget her.
