"It is not only a money issue, it is more about what is right and what is wrong" Sonu Niigaam
By Charla Manohar - BollySpice.com

BollySpice journalist Charla Manohar got together with musical sensation Sonu Niigaam before his concert in Rotterdam. In the first part of the interview, the singer talked about the copyright issues that have recently been raised in Bollywood. Writers, composers and lyricists want to make amendments to the current copyright act of 1957. According to this act, they do not get any royalties for their songs for the years to come. While producers and music companies are making money, these talented and integral parts of the music produced in Bollywood have to fight for their rights to this money. India is the only country that doesn't honour them; everywhere else in the world, all the parties behind a musical piece get royalties for their contribution.

Sonu explained that he met with Aamir Khan last week before his trip to Holland to talk about this issue extensively. Aamir recently said that actors are the ones who are the real stars and they are the ones who make the songs hits, irrespective of good lyrics or tunes. Sonu didn't like the comment and decided to talk to him about the issue. "Aamir is a good friend of mine and I love him very much, that is why I went to talk to him."

In our interview with Sonu he said it is an old tradition in our country that one guy sings and the "star" lip-syncs. This doesn't happen in any other country. Sonu added that he told Aamir that if he feels this way, he should stop using songs in his films. "Every film is promoted by using the songs. Aamir wanted to understand but he doesn't know that in the whole world, there isn't one country that has the same policy that is being used in India. Music industries are a separate business."

According to Sonu, Indian films shouldn't have songs. Because of the Hindi film songs, the private music industry isn't doing well. "There is no independent music industry in our country because of film music. Film music has killed ghazals, has killed classical, has killed any other kind of pop music or bhangra music or whatever."

Sonu is fighting for these copyright amendments being made. "Actors and producers of course have their own reasons for not letting this happen, because when the amendments are made they are going to lose a lot of money. But it is not only a money issue, it is more about what is right and what is wrong." He added that many people are involved in making one song. There are singers, actors, composers and lyricists, but sometimes the credit only goes to the actor. "Also most of the money earned by sales of the audio CD goes to the music company. In our country the credit mostly doesn't go to the musicians, but to actors, producers and directors."

He said that in the whole world there is this rule, that composers and lyricists get royalties of the songs they compose and write. "Only in India this doesn't happen." He spoke about the wife of composer Khemchand Prakash. "She has died while begging in front of a radio station, because they didn't get any royalties. That is why we want everyone to get royalties. So that we don't have to worry about our old age, because we will be ensured of an income."

Aamir, are you listening?

This is a very complicated problem. And Sonu has done a little to help untangle the issues involved.

First of all, film musicians must accept that they need films for their songs to be popular. When Shahrukh Khan performs a song on screen, with humungous Karan Johar-style sets and catchy Farah Khan'ish choreography, the song becomes much more likely to be a hit. Music labels just can't spend that much on star power and production values to promote non-film music.

And films have contributed to music in a big way. They have given stories and contexts, creating interesting song situations which we would not have heard if nto for films. Do you think 'Sandese Aate Hain' could have been made if the film Border was not made?

At the end of the day, there is some amazing music being produced independent of films, but how popular is it? Even the most popular non-film music, like for example Kailash Kher's work, pales in comparison to a hit film song in terms of popularity and profits.

BUT The other side is also true that a film without songs can't be popular. SRK himself accepted in an interview that he was wrong to think, in his early days, that he could become a megastar without doing songs and dances. Films need great music to create interest and bring people into theatres. Brilliant films like 'A Wednesday' go unnoticed because they have no songs - so there's nothing to put into promos.

The problem is that musicians have always acknowledged the contribution of the film by giving their work and royalties away to producers. Today they want some of the credit and profit back, but the producers refuse to acknowledge the importance of the CREATORS of the songs! Ha! Aamir Khan proposterously believes that creators of the song don't deserve royalties for the money produced by their own work!

Music labels, movie companies, actors, DJs, clubs, radio stations and reality shows - everyone EXCEPT the creators of film music seem to be making money from film songs. Kya kalyug aa gaya hai!

Vidhu Vinod Chopra should not have songs in his next film. We will see how much success the film has then.
I wonder why did he have Pancham Da for 1942 A Love Story. and his other movie Kareeb is only known for its music.

People need to understand that Sonu Nigam is not fighting for his own sake. He is fighting for all the present and future generations of musicians. One thing I will like to point out which xobile had also pointed out in his other post. Currently he is only talking about the composers and lyricists. Singers' issue hasn't come up since they fall in the Performer's category, not the creative artist's category.

Worldwide, the creators and original performer are regarded the parents of the piece of art. So royalties are given to them. In India, they don't reach the people they are procured for!

Here is Shreya Ghoshal's tweet to Sonu Nigam:
Just read all the tweets u wrote abt the copyright issue. I'm indeed very proud of u. Its high time.. Really..

I do agree with Sonu Nigam, hardly any recognition and dues are given to the signers in India. Sunidhi too in one of the interview had said how though her songs are a huge success, allt eh credit is given to the actors and hardly any actor has thanked her for the lending her voice to the song... I also agree that the ghazal and classical music is dying cos of the Hindi film music industry.

Thanks for sharing your wise views especially brahmabul and xobile.

The most important thing is that the effort Sonu Niigaam is doing is to make the public aware of these facts. I also was not aware that such an issue existed. it is definitely necessary to give to those who actually deserve to get it, the song is hit ultimately because the music, singing is good. the role of songs in promotion of a film can not be denied.

Hope to see a positive outcome of this issue! and wishing all the best to Sonu for the stand that he has taken so courageously.

Thanks to you also for starting this thread.

All that the new amendment proposes is public money extracted for the creators, should reach the creators. Its like Charity for a hospital, should be used to make a hospital and not a Palace. The hospital in fact is willing to contribute for the palace, in India's case!! Ready to give 50% of the royalty procured. But the palace wants to keep 100% of it.

Wow! nice metaphor to use! 😊
I think this issue should be high-lighted as much as it can in the media, because the public opinion in this regard should be included. I am surprised at the fact that why has no one ever tried to talk about it before!
