Changing the actors is one thing, but changing the character profiles totally another. During Uday's engagement, Neelam's family came across as a very traditional, religious family almost along the lines of Kesav-ji. Remember how particular they were that the ceremony and the tilak happen at exactly the auspicious moments, while the Vashisths were panicing that Uday was nowhere to be found? Essentially, it looked like a very conservative family who were trying to find a flawless match for their daughter.
But now, after this change, that whole profile has changed. What we see now are 2 somewhat modern parents, who are almost like crooks, behaving like they are hiding something (if it's a pregnancy, the contrast is even more stark) and whose sense of ethics are almost non-existant. Yeah, it's possible for very religious people to be that immoral and unethical, but it's rare. The current parents seem to be bordering on atheistic/agnostic, whereas the originals were very superstitious. Another thing to note is how these parents reacted when the ring Pankaj put on Neelam slipped and fell. The original parents would have had a fit and screamed APSHAKUN, whereas these parents were somewhat dismayed, but just let things go on.
