SURAT: The craze to see Bollywood film stars was very much evident in the city on Sunday morning at a Dumas Road theatre, when hundreds of people gathered to have a closer look at Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar leading to a stampede.
The duo was in the city to promote their forthcoming film, but the crowd became unmanageable. A few mediamen were thrown out of the hall by private security men before the local police were called in to avoid an ugly situation.
Deepika, who arrived around 10.30 am at the venue, refused to get off the car on seeing the crowd. She had to be escorted inside by private security men. People pushed and shoved each other outside the hall few even fell down.
Inside the hall where the media briefing was scheduled, some fans took over following which the private security men threw a few mediamen out.
Meanwhile, the crowd outside the theatre was getting restless and tried to barge in. Finally at 11.30 am, the organiser called in the police.
The press briefing was hastily conducted and the actress was taken out to the second venue when the tyres of her car crushed the toes of a few women.😲

Jayesh Desai of Rajhans Group of Industries, the programme organiser, told TOI, "The number of people, who had come to the venue, was beyond our expectation and so our security personnel were not in a position to manage. We had applied for police bandobast on February 18 at both the venues of our programme. We did not get any from Umra police station, but got it from Adajan police."
Terming Desai's statement as baseless, AR Chaudhary, police inspector of Umra police station, said "We were not informed about the programme by the organiser. He had not asked for any bandobast because for that you have to pay money. Nothing was paid nor was anything asked for from us. It was only when the crowd became unmanageable that we were called in at 11.30 am. I myself went there to control the situation."
"Luckily, no one was injured seriously," Chaudhary said, adding that no police complaint has been registered.
